TO: SENATORS BENNET AND GARDNER

FROM: COLORADO TAXPAYERS

SUBJECT: STOP THE TAXPAYER RIP-OFF. DON’T LET THEM WASTE OUR NATURAL GAS.

Make them stop.

Oil and gas companies that drill on federal land have to pay royalties on the gas they produce to compensate the public for extracting our resources. But when they waste that natural gas, through flaring, venting and leaks, they pay no royalties, leaving taxpayers with the short end of the stick.

Since 2006, American taxpayers have lost more than $380 million in royalties because of wasteful practices by oil and gas companies on public lands or because compa-nies used our public resources free of charge. Colorado alone lost millions of dollars that would have gone to state and local governments.

The Bureau of Land Management can help stop the waste and start paying taxpayers by requiring operators to use existing technologies and proven practices to pro-duce oil and gas more eciently. Colorado has already taken important steps to crack down on wasteful oil and gas operations. It is time the BLM followed suit.

An overwhelming, bipartisan majority of Coloradans agree: We must end natural gas waste on our public lands.

Please tell the BLM to follow Colorado’s lead and adopt common sense rules to stop wasting our tax dollars and put American Energy to good use.

That’s our natural gas they’re wasting.

Paid for by Taxpayers for Common Sense.
