Teacher SuggestionsStudents can refer to the number cards to aid with number formation and concept. Completed bookscan be placed in the reading corner for the authors and their friends to enjoy.
Directions for the Counting Critters Center1. Turn the number cards facedown on the table.
2. Write your name on the front cover of the book.
3. Open to the first page in the Counting Critters book and read the sentence.
4. Choose a number card and fill in the blank of the book with the number.
5. Draw the corresponding number of animals specified in the space allotted.
6. Turn to the second page in the book.
7. Repeat the steps until each page is completed. Color the illustrations on each page.
8. Read and enjoy the book.

Directions for the Fun in the Forest Center1. Choose one sentence.

• yellow, orange, red, and brown paper
• yarn cut into 18-inch (46 cm) pieces
• hole punch
Teacher SuggestionsColor each leaf on the Necklace Pattern Cards as indicated. Cut leaves out of colored paper insufficient numbers for each student to create a necklace. Punch a hole in the top of each leaf. Tie aknot at one end of the yarn so the necklace pieces stay in place during construction. Tape the other endof yarn to prevent fraying. Use the taped end of yarn as a needle.
Directions for the Falling into Patterns Center1. Choose one necklace pattern card and one piece of yarn, knotted at one end.
2. Create a necklace by stringing different-colored leaves as they appear on the patterncard.
3. Finish the necklace by repeating the pattern at least three times.
4. Tie the necklace ends together.
5. Choose a different necklace pattern card and repeat the steps.
Rhyme TimeSkill: rhyming

Directions for the Rhyme Time Center1. Lay five leaves on the table.

Directions for the Squirrel Words Center1. Place the squirrel on the table.2. Choose one leaf and place it in the leaf outline in the squirrel’s paw while sounding out the
word family.3. Choose one acorn and add it to the beginning of the word family in the acorn outline.4. After making a word, determine if it is a real word or nonsense word.5. Remove the acorn and add a different one to the beginning of the word part.6. Continue doing this at least four times to determine how many real words can be made in
that word family.7. Remove the acorns and leaves. Choose a different leaf and repeat the steps.

Teacher SuggestionsCopy and color the squirrels various colors such as gray, brown, and black. Laminate the squirrels andtails for durability. Punch holes on the squirrels and tails where indicated. Tie yarn around one of theend holes on the squirrel. Tape the opposite end of the yarn to prevent fraying.
Directions for the Missing Tails Center1. Choose one squirrel.2. Find the squirrel’s matching tail.3. Join the tail to the squirrel’s body by sewing it together using the yarn.4. Put the completed squirrel to the side.5. Choose a different squirrel and repeat the steps.

Teacher SuggestionsTo maintain two sets of cards, copy the Pumpkin Cards onto orange paper. Copy the Leaf Cards onto adifferent fall color.
Directions for the Matching Madness Center1. Lay all of the Leaf Cards facedown on one section of the table.
2. Lay all of the Pumpkin Cards facedown on a different section of the table.
3. Choose one Leaf Card and turn it faceup. Choose one Pumpkin Card and turn itfaceup.
4. If the number on the leaf card matches the number on the Pumpkin Card, remove thematch to a “discard” pile.
5. If the number and objects are not a match, turn both cards facedown again.
6. Repeat the steps until all the cards are matched and in the “discard” pile.
Fall Treasure HuntSkill: recognizing numbers
Materials• Treasure Hunt Lists (page 113)• Treasure Sheets (pages 114–115)• Treasure Cards (pages 116–117)• egg cartons or ice cube trays
Teacher SuggestionsCut out all the treasures and divide them into groups for easy accessibility. Use egg cartons or ice cubetrays to separate treasures. Cut out the Treasure Hunt Lists and connect them at the tabs, creating stripsnumbered one through ten.
Directions for the Fall Treasure Hunt Center1. Choose one Treasure Hunt List. Find the first item on the list.
2. Count out the correct number of that item. (1 turkey, 2 corn, etc.)
3. Glue the correct number of that item next to the first space on the Treasure Sheet.
4. Find the second item on the list.
5. Repeat steps until all items are counted and glued.

Teacher SuggestionIf a laminator is not available, make one copy of the scarecrow for each child and allow him or her todraw shapes and color directly on the paper.
Directions for the Shaping Up Center1. Place the scarecrow on the table. Choose one shape strip.
2. Using overhead markers, add shapes to the scarecrow by drawing what is indicated onthe strip. (Example: Draw rectangles for the scarecrow’s feet.)
3. Erase the shapes with a damp cloth. Choose a different shape strip and repeat the steps.

2. Starting at the star on the wreath, place one pattern piece on each leaf.
3. Continue the pattern until all the leaves contain a pattern piece.
4. Remove the pattern pieces and repeat the activity using a new strip.

Teacher SuggestionsBefore laminating, print lowercase letters on the back of each picture card so children can check foraccuracy by matching the lowercase letter to the uppercase letter. Cut out the picture cards.
Directions for The Big Letter Roundup Center1. Choose a letter mat and place it on the table.
2. Locate one uppercase letter on the mat and determine its sound.
3. Find a picture that has a corresponding beginning letter sound and place it on top of theuppercase letter.
4. Locate a different uppercase letter and continue until all the letters are covered.
5. Remove the pictures.
6. Choose a different letter mat and repeat the steps.

Teacher SuggestionCut out the garden markers prior to the activity.
Directions for the Pumpkin Patch Reading Center1. Choose a Pumpkin Patch.
2. Locate a row of pumpkins and determine what beginning sound is made by the words inthe pumpkins in that row.
3. Place the appropriate garden marker (letter) at the beginning of the pumpkin row.
4. Locate another row and continue placing the markers until all the rows are labeled.
5. Remove the garden markers.
