Urban Agenda

How can we use cities and metropolitan areas better as a vehicle for economic growth and competitiveness?

2

Economic Boards

Economic Boards are working on innovations systems, cluster governance and bridging the gaps of competitiveness

Features:

● Triple helix ● Small organization with boundary workers ● Boards organize sharing, matching and learning

between stakeholders

3

Meaning of Economic Boards for the Urban Challenges in the Urban Agenda

At the moment, they have a small role in the development of the European and Dutch Urban Agenda....

But they play a key role in innovation and valorisation in cities and metropolitan solutions... And they contribute to the administrative power of cities and metropolitan areas.

INTRODUCTION

ENGINEERING THE FUTURE CITY.

AMS Institute [eɪ - ɛm – ɛs] is a new ambitious scientific institute located in Amsterdam. In this institute science, education, government, business partners and societal organizations are working tightly together to create advanced solutions for the complex challenges a metropolitan region like Amsterdam is facing. RESEARCH + VALORISATION – PROJECT EXAMPLES RAINSENSE

Urban challenge: climate proofing the city because of more extreme climate events like extreme rainfall and smart urban water management to protect critical infrastructures. Aim: research and design of novel applications of technical sensors and combinations of passive, opportunistic as well active, participatory sensing to provide high resolution, real‐time information on rainfall, and urban water/drainage systems. Partners: Waternet, KPN, Alliander, IBM, Cisco, WUR, TUD, Deltares.

Urban challenge: Circular economy; increased resource scarcity requires more careful use and re-use of resources (materials, metals, minerals, nutrients) from city waste streams (waste, water, energy, food). Aim: Development of data-driven DSS tools for identification of urban metabolism synergies and industrial symbiosis, by integrated mapping of resource flows in the city (nutrients, water, energy, waste) at high resolutions and dynamically. Partners: Waternet, AEB, Alliander, Port of Amsterdam, City of Amsterdam, WUR, TUD, MIT

CROWD SENSING AND CROWD MANAGEMENT AT SAIL2015

Dashboard to unravel SAIL 2015 visitor flows and potential critical situations based on real-time data collection and innovative data fusion techniques

– Groups: Mix Academic / Public / Private – Define the relevant current challenges for

current networks; think about needed stakeholders and an ideal framework!

– And think together: what can you offer to a solution? What is the advantage of our expertise, combined?

WORKSHOP AMS INSTITUTE – TCI EINDHOVEN – NOVEMBER 2016

AMS Institute combines partners from different sectors. Economic boards are also an example of innovation networks.

According to you, how would be the framework of

an ideal network for urban innovation? How would you contribute to it?
