THE ARTISTS

Vladimir Volokhin plays the domra, a three-stringed, long-necked mandolin that is a predecessor to the balalaika. Since the sixteenth century it has been used as a solo instrument in Russia; today, in folk music, it is also played in ensembles.Vladimir has been playing the domra since the age of six. He has performed as a soloist in ensembles and with the National Orchestra of Hungary. He is the 1986 Russian National Champion of the “All Russia Domra Competition.”

Sergei Teleshev plays the bajan, a chromatic-button accordion with various registers, which the musician changes by using the chin.Sergei has won many regional prizes in Russia for his talents on the bajan, which he has played since he was six. He also has studied the piano.

Valerie Petrukhin plays the double-bass balalaika, the three-stringed Russian national instrument with a triangular body made of fi r, known for its resonant sound.Valerie began playing the accordion at age six and the balalaika when he was nineteen. He also has studied the piano and trombone.

Donna Marisa BontragerArtistic Director, Repetiteur, Costume DesignerDonna Marisa Bontrager has studied the eight levels of the internationally-recognized Russian Kirov training syllabus and performance of classical variations with Bernadine DeMike, Marvin Askew and Karl Singletary. She has also studied extensively with former New Yorker Howard Epstein, previous co-director of the Conservatory of Classical Dance and student of Vaganova expert John Barker. Her performance résumé embraces work with New York companies, including Empire Ballet, Buffalo City Ballet, Royale Dance Theater, and Festival Choir Ballet. In addition, she was invited to perform in the international Feast of the Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Israel, and has been invited to join the World Congress on Dance.She has staged numerous full-length concerts and original ballets for Ballet Fantastique, including Sleeping Beauty, Cakewalk Ballet, Danse Renaissance and Mosaico de Danza; and innovative collaborations with musicians and organizations, including Eugene Symphony, Traduza Dance Company, the Umpqua Dance Festival and the Slavic Festival.Ms. Bontrager’s costume designs have appeared on stages across the Northwest.

Hannah Joy BontragerExecutive Director, DancerHannah Joy Bontrager-Gwartney has studied the eight levels of the Vaganova Syllabus and Vaganova pedagogy with Donna Marisa Bontrager while creating and performing works locally, and instructing classes at Ballet Fantastique for almost ten years. In addition to spending two summers at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C. under Artistic Director Oleg Vinogradov, she was one of fi ve students invited internationally to join renowned Kirov prima ballerina Mme. Alla Sizova’s advanced class. In 2003 she graduated from the Academy of Colorado Ballet’s professional division while concurrently training and performing with the company’s apprentices in productions such as The Nutcracker and Coppelia. Hannah graduated summa cum laude from the Robert D. Clark Honors College of the University of Oregon, where she earned concurrent BA’s in Dance and English Literature and a minor in Community Arts. She has also performed as a guest dancer and/or contributing choreographer with a number of Northwest companies. She is currently a soloist with the Ballet Fantastique Chamber Performance Ensemble.

Alonzo Lee Moore IVDancerAlonzo Lee Moore IV began his training in 2002 in Loyola University’s Ballet Repertory Program under the direction of Laura Zombrano and Gayle Parmele. He has also danced for the New Orleans Metropolitan Opera and New Orleans’ only professional ethnic dance ensemble, Komenka. With Komenka, Alonzo performed across Poland, Bulgaria, and France. After relocating in the Northwest, Alonzo danced in Traduza Dance Company and Rita Honka Dance Company. He has also worked with a number of other local artist-choreographers. This year Alonzo performed in Oregon Festival of American Music (OFAM) productions of South Pacifi c and Babes in Arms.

Ashley Blake BontragerDancerAshley Blake Bontrager has studied classical ballet at Buffalo City Ballet, the Conservatory of Classical Dance, Ballet Fantastique, and the University of Oregon. Under Ballet Fantastique Artistic Director Donna Marisa Bontrager, she has performed roles such as Little Red Riding Hood, Carabosse, the Gold Fairy Variation, and the Fleur de Farine (Sleeping Beauty), Chocolat (The Nutcracker), Odette and the Four Little Swans (Swan Lake), and in numerous contemporary ballet pieces, many of which she has played an active role in choreographing. In addition to her work with Ballet Fantastique, Ashley is currently a Journalism-Broadcasting major at the University of Oregon.

Nicola Juliet ThiemeDancerNicola Juliet Thieme began her classical ballet training at the Conservatory of Classical Dance and studied numerous styles at Portland’s Oregon Ballet Theatre. She has been coached by Ballet Fantastique’s Donna Marisa Bontrager and Susan Zadoff at the Eugene School of Ballet and has been invited to the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, DC. Nicola was invited to join Santa Barbara’s State Street Ballet as an apprentice, and spent a season performing in a range of company repertoire. Nicola has performed many roles, including the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Giselle variation, Beauty Fairy (Sleeping Beauty), and Waltz of the Flowers in Eugene Ballet Company’s Nutcracker. Nicola is also an avid choreographer.

Julia Ann HakesDancerJulia Ann Hakes has been dancing ballet since she was fi ve years old. She has been a student at Ballet Fantastique for four years and is currently on the sixth level of the Vagonova Syllabus. Julia is an Oregon native and a South Eugene High School graduate, and currently a freshman at the University of Oregon. Julia’s soloist roles with Ballet Fantastique include Goldilocks in Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Julia was also active in choreographing the work for Ballet Fantastique’s Cakewalk Ballet last fall), and the Gold Fairy in Sleeping Beauty.
