While Kinesio Taping has been available since 1979, it wasn’t until the 2008 Summer Olym-pic Games that it received worldwide attention and no-tice. Photos of U.S. volleyball player Kerri Walsh showed the patterns of blue tape placed on her shoulder to help reduce pain while she was playing this popular sport.

Steve Huber, a physical thera-pist/orthotist in Auburn, has used Kinesio Taping to treat his patients since 1995. “Kine-sio tape is a cotton, latex-free, heat-activated adhesive acrylic tape with a fingerprint pattern on it,” explained Huber, as he displayed rolls of the tape in his Minot Avenue office. “It has the shape and weight of human skin and can be applied anywhere on the body to facili-tate the body’s natural healing process.”

The Kinesio Taping website

(www.kinesiotaping.com) points out that the tape gives support and stability to a per-son’s muscles and joints with-out restricting the body’s range of motion. It is used success-fully to treat a variety of ortho-pedic, neuromuscular, neuro-logical and medical conditions.

It should be noted that unlike athletic tape that simply wraps an area of the body, Kinesio tape actually lifts the skin to alleviate pain and facilitates healing.

“The tape can facilitate or in-hibit a muscle and actually move tissue,” said Huber. He explained that when treating knee pain in a patient, the tape actually lifts the skin and tissue from the grinding area, result-ing in less pain in the affected area.

Huber said that one condition that particularly responds to

Kinesio Taping is sciatica pain caused by irritation of one of five spinal nerve roots that give rise to each sciatic nerve. The pain is often felt in the lower back, buttocks or various parts of the leg and foot.

The Kinesio website claims the lifting effect forms convolu-tions in the skin that increase the interstitial space (the small, narrow space between tissues or parts of an organ) and al-lows for decreased inflamma-tion. The site says that the tape is safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric.

Huber cautioned that Kinesio Taping isn’t designed to be the sole treatment for a condition.

“It is a treatment strategy, not an end result,” said Huber, who has been a physical therapist for over 40 years. “It doesn’t replace other methods of treat-ment; it enhances what we do.”

The Pelican Diner - more than just foodJust like the television show, Cheers, everyone likes to have that one place to go where they feel welcome, appreciated and can enjoy their favorite food/drink.

If you live in the Sebastian area, then that place would be the Pelican Diner located at 13260 US Hwy 1, across from the Home Depot.

If you are not familiar with the Pelican Diner, you are missing out on a culinary experience that includes an array of homemade desserts, Friday Night dinners, break-fast and lunch lunch specials designed to whet your appe-tite for more.

Owner Greg Hepler knew from an early age that he wanted to cook and provide an extraordinary experience to his customers. Starting at age 17, Hepler honed his skills at venues such as Windsor, Orchid Island and Quail Valley. After that he did a short stint in food sales for Cheney Brothers but his dream was always to have his own business and cook.

So when the opportunity presented itself to open a venue in Sebastian, Hepler grabbed the opportunity and started building a loyal and devoted following of cus-tomers who are have made the Pelican Diner a part of

their normal routine.

This feel-good, family owned restaurant has morethan 150 menu choices, said owner Greg Hepler.

What appeals to many is the family atmosphere as both Hepler and the waitresses greet customers by name. Once you have been there once, you are greeted like a long lost friend.

Once you get to know the staff, you will meet Hep-ler’s mother who mans the cashier, his young daughter who will occasionally assist her grandmother on the cash register as well, continuing

the family feel of this estab-lishment.

It’s just not the family feel of this restaurant that sets it apart, it’s the food. He-pler has the culinary chops to offer customers dishes from comfort food to lemon crusted baked haddock over green onion rice topped with a dill butter sauce, French onion chopped Salisbury steak with gravy and mashed potatoes on Friday nights. His skills have earned him recognition in the local Top Chef contests but more im-portantly his skills have built him a loyal and grow-ing fan base of customers who come back for more.

Sudoku PuzzleJailbreak Brevard Adventure Race Coming On October 26The Jailbreak Brevard Ad-venture Race is located on the grounds of the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes, Fl. This off the grid adventure race covers 3 miles and 12-15 muddy, wet, fun filled obstacles all while in hot pursuit by Bre-vard’s finest.

Be a rebel and break out on your own or run with your chain gang.

Watch out for the blood-hounds and SWAT team. You don’t want to get de-tained in the holding cell.

A NOTE FROM SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY:“I am excited to let every-one know that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is hosting the first annual JAILBREAK Adventure Race.

This race is similar in for-mat to other adventure races some of you have previously competed in, but is unlike any other ad-venture race you have ever seen! This course is the ul-timate challenge, designed to present you with the un-expected as you attempt to escape from Jail!”

Located on the back grounds of the Brevard County Jail, this race will challenge you both mentally and physically to see if you have hat it

takes as you and your fel-low competitors attempt to escape from Jail while being pursued by Brevard County’s SWAT Team, K-9 Unit and Mounted Posse.

If captured, there will be a minor time penalty causing your time to be extended to complete the race. This course is designed for both the serious competitor who wants to brag to their friends about their rigorous escape and for the novice who just wants to come out with their friends and have a great time while support-ing an amazing non-profit organization.

This unique race is a 3-mile outdoor course through the woods with 12-15 obstacles requiring strategy, skill and physical endurance while avoiding capture. You can compete as an individual or as a team with an award presented to the top Public Safety team and Private Business team. We encour-age everyone to compete and also to bring fellow es-capees (teammates) to par-ticipate in the competition.

The competition is open to everyone ages 12 and older (under 18 must have ac-companying adult) includ-ing other SWAT Teams, ROTC Units, Public Safety Teams, Athletic Teams, Business Teams, Civic Groups and anyone else

who wants to enjoy a great day.

The JAILBREAK will take place on October 26, 2013, and regardless if you are truly an exceptional escape artist, or just love to get outdoors for the occasional adventure, this event will be fun for the entire family. The event will include food vendors, kids games, and live performances by some of Brevard County’s local musical artists.

Keep these tips in mind to make sure you and your pets enjoy the holiday season.

Pet Parenting Tips Around the Holidays(NewsUSA) - Pet par-enting can be as crazy as it is fun, especially around the holidays. Add the stress of hosting family and friends, and many pet parents end up ignoring Fido or Fluffy in favor of cooking a feast or wrapping last-minute gifts. So, how do you find balance be-tween preparing for the holidays and tending to your pet?

* Keep Plants and Goodies Out of Reach: Many traditional holi-day plants, like poinset-tias and mistletoe, can be harmful to your pet’s health, so be sure to keep these out of reach. Also, refrain from sharing spe-cific holiday treats with your tail-wagger, par-ticularly fruitcake and sugar-free goods, which contain dog-toxic ingre-dients.

* Decorate Wisely: Holi-day decor can be danger-ous for pets, so it’s im-

portant to take certain precautions when deco-rating. Place fresh trees in discreet corners, and keep lights, ornaments and tinsel off the lower branches. Deter your pet from electrical cords by spraying the cords with lemon peel or bitter or-ange tea.

* Mind Your Pet’s Man-ners: Heightened activ-ity at home can affect your pet’s behavior, so it’s important to prepare. Hosting small gather-ings prior to the holiday can help reinforce good manners. If you know your pet won’t hold back his excitement, set aside a safe room with a bed, water, toys and some treats where he can stay during your event.

* Get the Right Travel Gear: Crates are useful for all forms of travel, but if flying, be certain to use an airline-approved shipping crate. Take all health records with you.

10 Battery Tweaks for iPhonesApple’s latest iPhones still don’t pack as much battery life as some of their nearest competitors. But by apply-ing a few system tweaks, you can improve your iPhone’s battery life con-siderably. Now that iOS 7 is out, there are even more ways to conserve your mo-bile’s power. Following are ten tips to increase the iOS 7 battery life.

1: One of the easiest ways to extend battery life is by dimming the screen brightness of the iDevice. Navigate to Settings>> Brightness & Wallpaper and drag the slider to left to manage the default bright-ness. Also, turning on the Auto-Brightness allows the screen to adjust its bright-ness depending on the lighting conditions. Go to Settings>> Brightness & Wallpaper and turn on the Auto-Brightness.

2: Turn off services such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G/4G when not in use to

to save energy.Settings>> Wi-Fi and from there set Wi-Fi to offSettings>> Bluetooth and mode the slider to turn it offSettings>> Cellular and set the Cellular Data to off.

3: Also, disable the push mail accounts when not in use. Head over to Set-tings>> Mail, Contacts, Calendars>> Fetch New Data and set Push to off. It should be noted that by doing so, the messages are sent to the respective push email accounts will now be received based on the glob-al Fetch settings rather than as they arrive.

4: Minimise the use of ap-plications that use location services such as Maps and use whenever required. Go to Settings>> Privacy>> Location Services to dis-able these services.

5: Try to fetch data manu-ally, since the battery drains out quickly if the email or is fetched more frequently.

6: Lock the iDevices when not in use. Press the Sleep/Wake button to lock the device. Besides, the Auto-Lock interval can be set by following this path; Set-tings>> General>> Auto-Lock and set the interval to a short period of time.

7: Turning on the Airplane Mode is likely to increase the battery life. Go to Set-tings and from there turn the Airplane Mode to on.

8: Movies, games and web browsing consume more power, therefore, limit the use of such battery-inten-sive apps.

9: It is advisable to go through at least one charge cycle per month, which is charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down.

10: Always ensure that the device is running on the lat-est software from Apple.
