• Got a child going off to college? Before you leave campus, go together to the health center, and make sure your kid knows who to call/where to go for emergency or urgent care, both on campus and off. Not knowing could cause a delay in getting care, turning a bad situation worse.

• According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Each 12-ounce soft drink contains approximately 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking

just one can of soda a day increases a child’s risk of obesity by 60 percent.” Talk to your children about making smart choices both in the lunch line and at the vending machines.

• Returning to school can mean returning to sports after a summer hiatus. Be smart, and follow these guidelines from the American Academy of Pedi-atrics: Give yourself at least one recovery day off each week; be sure you are wearing the proper gear and that it’s properly fitted; don’t forget to cross-train (general exercises to strengthen your muscles and keep you flexible); take breaks and hydrate to avoid overheating; and have your coach reinforce

Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHello Everybody!

We are working hard around here, but I did get a chance to clean up and organize a bit of the garage. I am pretty sure when I walked in there, I could hear the voices of a thousand little projects saying "Pick me, pick me!". See, I have this problem... when something breaks I don't look at it as 100% broken, I think of it as still 75% good. This

tends to fill up a few boxes here and there. So, I periodically pick through and see if I have acquired anything that would bring a project or two together... and when that's done, I try to repack things even better until next time. I also work hard on my "acquisition to throw away ratio"... sometimes those three-legged stools just have to go... to make room for a chainsaw that only runs wide open and a 12" Gandalf the White action figure that's missing his staff and sword.... both 75% good.

Maybe some readers out there have the same affliction... maybe we could start a support group or something. I have a few members in mind already. Not that this has anything to do with the present subject, but I got a text from my Mom the other day exclaiming, "Found the Commodore 64 while cleaning the shop"... the Com-modore 64 computer came out in 1982. I'm not speculating the connection could be hereditary, but maybe our support group can do a study or something...?

So here's the "before" garage picture. Next issue I'll share the "after".... keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for reading the is-sue of Tidbits of the Lake Area, Lynette and I appreciate it very much! Watch out for those school kids, and we'll see you next issue!!

the proper technique and safety rules.• Got memorabilia? Use a reasonably sized plas-

tic storage bin for each child. Include folders noting each school grade for art and important academic papers. It can be a very special collection that you can give to your child when he or she is an adult.

• Keep cut veggies crunchy by lining a plastic or glass storage dish with coffee filters before adding the vegetables, like carrot sticks and celery.

Q: Every year I have to deal with brown and dying grass, because the climate we live in gets so hot in the late summer. We also have water restrictions to deal with. How can I keep my lawn healthy? -- Bryan in Norcross, Ga.

A: Dealing with watering restrictions and drought condi-tions has become a regular way of life in many Southern states, and it’s especially difficult for homeowners who want a green, lush lawn during a prime time of year for outdoor parties and

Q: The closets throughout our home are extremely musty-smelling, to the point that our clothes don’t stay fresh when hung up in them for over a day. I bought air fresheners for each of them, but they don’t work. Any suggestions? -- Jay P., White Plains, N.Y.

A: Dampness is the primary cause of mustiness and odors in closets, but how that dampness gets into the closets and how you can get rid of it takes a few steps.

First, the way closets are configured often contributes to the problem. They generally are re-cessed back into the wall, and are closed off by doors. Both of these things impede airflow and allow for stagnant, humid air in these spaces.

Standard air fresheners don’t help if there’s very little airflow in the closet. What you can do immediately to improve the situation is to open the closet doors and remove

everything: clothes, boxes, baskets, toys ... all of it. Set up a fan on a side table so that it blows air directly into the closet. Let the closet air this way for 24 hours.

Then refill the closet -- but with half as much clothing and other stuff as before. Cluttered, overstuffed closets can cause that musty odor to come back in no time, because all that junk is blocking any airflow.

While the fans are running, hunt for possible moisture problems in the house. Go into the attic with a flashlight and look for any possible leaks, while smelling for mustiness or mold. If your home has a basement, inspect it as well.

Check all the ceilings: Are there any light brown, circular areas visible? These are water stains, caused by either a leak in the roof or a leaking pipe.

If you smell mustiness and mold but can’t find what’s causing it, or if you see water stains on the ceiling or walls but can’t locate a source, call a contractor who specializes in moisture problems.

Be sure to mention mustiness in the closets to the contractor, if he or she doesn’t ask first. Elimi-nating sources of humidity or leaks will be most important, but if the closets’ problem continues even after you declutter them, talk with the contractor about ways to improve airflow in these spaces.

HOME TIP: Placing a single open box of unscented baking soda on a closet’s upper shelf is a cost-effective way to manage minor moisture and odors in the enclosed space.

Sam walks into his boss’s office. “Sir, I’ll be straight with you, I know the economy isn’t great, but I have over three companies after me, and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise.” After a few minutes of haggling the boss finally agrees to a 5% raise, and

Sam happily gets up to leave. “By the way”, asks the boss as Sam is getting up,

“which three companies are after you?” “The electric company, water company, and phone company”, Sam replied.

Q: My Uncle Herbert was a golfer, and he recently gave me a PGA program from 1946 signed by Ben Hogan. The event was at the Portland Golf Club in Oregon. Although I have no plans to sell it, do you have any idea of how much it might be worth?

-- Jimmy, Lakewood, Colo.A: I contacted several golf collectors, and they seem to agree that

your signed PGA program could be worth as much as $1,500.• • •

Q: I have a copy of Life magazine dated March 1, 1937. I read a recent question in your column from a reader who had a copy of Time magazine from 1951, which you claimed was worth about $15. If his is worth $15, what is the value of the Life that I have?

-- Florence, South Daytona Beach, Fla.A: The first issue of Henry Luce’s Life appeared Nov. 23, 1936.

Most issues from 1937 currently sell in the $15-$25 range, depend-ing on condition and content. Keep in mind that this magazine had a press run each week in the millions. As I have often written in this

A: Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back on July 1, 2015 as the aforementioned Terminator in “Terminator: Genisys.” The fifth installment of the futuristic action series also stars Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen of “Game of Thrones”) as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke (no relation to Emilia) as John Connor, and Jai Courtney (Eric in the “Divergent” trilogy) as Kyle Reese. I am curious as to the timeline of this film, because Emilia

and Jai are in their 20s, and Jason, who plays their son, John, is in his 40s. So, I’ll guess that some crisscross-ing time-travel component definitely will play a part in this movie (as in all the “Terminator” films).

• • •Q: What has Adrien Brody

been doing lately? -- Gina T., via email

A: Next up for Adrien is starring as the great magician-showman Henry

Houdini in “Houdini,” the History Channel original miniseries, which airs Sept. 1 and 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The miniseries follows the epic tales of Harry Houdini as he emerges as America’s first bona-fide world-renowned superstar. “Houdini” delves deep behind the curtain into his life through his stunts, visions and mastery of illusion.

• • •Q: Will my favorite summer series, “Suits,” be back

for another season? -- Fallon F., via emailA: USA’s hit legal dramedy, which had its mid-

season finale Aug. 20, has indeed been renewed for a 16-episode fifth season. Also, look for the second half of season four in spring 2015.

Q: Can you tell me about the actress who plays Lucia on “Grace-land”? She looks famil-iar to me. What else has she been on? -- Patrick J., via email

A: Jamie Gray Hyder is perhaps best known for playing Danielle, a werewolf in Alcide’s pack, last season on “True Blood.” After her “TB” stint ended, she went on to co-star on “Graceland” as Lucia Solano, who is just try-ing to live life on the straight and narrow -- unlike her brother, Carlito, and the rest of her family. I spoke with Jamie recently about her new role, as well as what we can expect as “Graceland” wraps up its second season on the USA network.

“Lucia wants to get a real job and be independent and prosperous, in a legal way. She wants to be able to live a normal life and have normal relationships. She doesn’t get to have friends or lovers, because those relationships are constantly ruined by the antics of her brother and the rest of her family. She’s just striving for normalcy and is constantly being dragged through the mud.”

She did give me a little tease as to what to expect in the finale: “It’s a two-part finale, and it’s definitely designed to leave everyone wanting more. I just got done shooting it, and it’s all very fresh in my mind. I’ll tell you this, when I read the finale, I was shocked.”

• • •Q: Is it true that there is going to be another “Ter-

minator” movie? -- Kalli R., Modesto, Calif.

• • •Q: I have a Cola-Cola bench with iron arms, legs and frame. I

would like to know its value. -- Dorothy, Coventry, R.I.

A: With the scant information you sent, your question is impossi-ble for me to answer. I have no way of determining the age or rarity of your bench. Coca-Cola items are, indeed, collectible, but most of the items I’ve seen have been reproductions. You might contact the Coca-Cola Collectors Club, PMB 609, 4780 Ashford-Dunwoody St. A, Atlanta, GA 30338; www.cocacolaclub.org.

• • •Q: I have 19 Edison Diamond Discs, which I would like to sell.

How do I go about doing this? -- Mary, Deltona, Fla.

A: Edison Diamond Discs are a little difficult to sell since they can only be played on an Edison machine. Most of the Edison re-cords I’ve seen at shops and in malls are priced in the $5-$10 range. I suggest you contact antiques shops in your area to see if there is any interest.

• It was noted British wit Hector Hugh Monroe -- better known by his pen name, Saki -- who made the following sage observation: “A little inaccuracy sometimes saves a ton of explanation.”

• When Mozart was young, he traveled to Rome to hear Gregorio Allegri’s “Miserere” performed by the papal choir. This piece was performed only once a year, and the pope had forbidden its performance anywhere else in the world. There was only one copy of the score, and it was kept in a vault in the Vatican. According to a papal decree, anyone who reproduced the work in any way would be excom-municated from the Catholic Church. After Mozart heard the performance -- only once -- he transcribed the entire piece. When the pope heard of this feat of memory and musical genius, rather than excommu-nicating the prodigy, he awarded Mozart the Cross of the Order of the Golden Spur.

• You’ve probably heard the phrase “long in the tooth” to describe someone who’s getting up there in years, but did you ever wonder where it origi-nated? The term came from horse breeders. As equines age, their gums begin to recede; the teeth don’t actually get longer, but they appear to. There-fore, a horse whose teeth look long must be getting old.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1NO SCHOOL

If your young kids and grandkids like blowing bubbles, they’ll love this ac-tivity. When the colored bubbles dry on construction paper, they will become the eye-catching background for one-of-a-kind artwork.

Here’s the stuff you’ll need:• Pie pan or wide-mouth cup• Liquid poster paint • Liquid dishwashing detergent and water, or commercial bubble blowing solution• Markers or crayons• White or light-colored construction paper or cardstock• Drinking straws• Paper to cover worktable

Here’s the fun:1. Cover your work surface

with newspaper or butcher paper. In the pie pan or cup, stir together 1 cup water, two to three table-spoons paint, and one tablespoon detergent. Or, add paint to the bubble-blowing solution.

2. Place a straw in the mixture and blow into the straw to create

Blow a Bubble Card

colored bubbles billowing over the edge of the container. Remove the straw.3. Fold a piece of construction paper in half to form a card, or use the front of the

card on top of the bubbles and hold it in place until several colored bubbles have popped and transferred their shapes onto the paper. Continue the process with dif-ferent colors, if you wish. Set aside to dry. (If the bubble prints are not as dark as you’d like, add more paint to the mixture and blow again.)

4. Use markers to add drawings to the dried bubble prints, such as a jet flying through the bubble “clouds” for a “Bon Voyage” card. Write a message inside the card and sign it. Tuck into an envelope for a unique greeting or summer thank-you note to a friend or relative.

Note: Remind children to be careful not to suck on the straw when blowing the bubble solution. If you clip two holes about halfway down the straw, children will be less able to suck in the bubbles.
