Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHey everyone... thought I would use my Publisher's Corner to answer a question this

week.Q: Where do you park your Hummer?A: Lynette got asked this question a while back, a few months into our ownership of this

Tidbits publication. Let me assure you that if we had the money to buy a Hummer I could find numerous other things to do with that. Lynette sort of laughed at the question, thinking

it was a bit of joke... but the guy was serious. From his point of view in this small town, we looked like some big shot publisher's that bought up this publication and came in and wanted to take as much money as we could from small town businesses. Let me make it clear that Lynette and I are the polar opposite of that scenario. We've worked blue collar jobs all of our lives and done our best to live within our means and raise our family. We did not sit in some fancy board room with suits and ties on and decide how to maximize our market share. We do this because it is our skill set, it's what we know how to do, and I have a passion for tangible publishing - real world hold-it-in-your-hand publishing. When the opportunity came up to purchase this Tidbits publication, we put everything we have on the line to make it happen, and more than two years later we feel we have molded it into what our vision is for this publication - a no-strings-attached FREE, FUN & FAR-REACHING publication that readers of all ages can look forward to picking up in their local businesses each and every week.

• It was English poet Martin Far-quhar Tupper who made the following sage observation: “Well-timed silence hath more eloquence than speech.”

• If you’re in the neighborhood of Bessemer, Alabama, you might want to stop in its Hall of His-tory. Though the connection to local history isn’t clear, Hitler’s typewriter is on display to curious onlookers.

• You may be among those people who think good deeds and selfless acts are on the decline. If so, consider this story: In 2010, an employee at a recycling company came across 23 U.S. savings bonds while sorting through a bin of discarded papers. Instead of trying to cash the $22,000 worth of bonds himself, Mike Rodgers decided to track down the owner. It turned out that the woman who had bought the bonds, Martha Dobbins, had been dead for almost two decades. Rodgers didn’t give up, though; he began a search for Robert Roberts, who was also named on the bonds.

by Samantha Weaver

Though the name is common and Rodgers hit many dead ends, he eventually located the correct Robert Roberts, the son of Martha Dobbins. Roberts hadn’t even been aware of the bonds’ existence. Rodgers, his good deed finally being done, refused a reward.

ander, and “The Antique Trader Kitchen Collectibles Price Guide” edited by Kyle Husfloen, both published by Krause Books. I also urge you to visit local an-tique malls, where you’ll be amazed at the demand and prices generated by old-er kitchen items.

• • •Q: I have a coin collection that began

with my great-grandfather and continued with my dad, who died four years ago. The collection is a combination of coin-age and currency. I need a professional appraiser so we can establish values for insurance purposes. Can you help me? -- Sally, Metarie, La.

A: Dr. Spencer Peck is a senior mem-ber of the American Society of Apprais-ers and specializes in numismatics, one of only nine appraisers in the United States with such credentials. Contact is P.O. Box 526, Oldwick, NJ 08858; and [email protected].

• • •Q: My dad was stationed in Germany

during the 1950s and purchased several Hummel figurines during that time. Can you recommend a good price guide so we can determine current values? -- Laura, Paris, Ark.

A: There are several excellent guides, but my personal favorite is “M.I. Hum-mel: Figurines, Plates, Miniatures & More” by Robert L. Miller and published by Portfolio Press. This guide is frequent-ly updated, and its prices seem to reflect the present economy and marketplace. It can be ordered at amazon.com.

• • •Q: My dad was a pipe smoker, and I

have inherited about two dozen of his pipes. Do you have any suggestions of how I can dispose of them? -- Cynthia, Buffalo, N.Y.

A: One of the better groups is the North American Society of Pipe Collec-tors. Contact is P.O. Box 9642, Colum-bus, OH 43209.

Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O. Box 536475, Or-lando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected]. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

Did You Know? Garney Henley - Canadian Football Hall of Fame Wide receiver and defensive back, was born in Hayti, SD. Henley was drafted in 1960 by the NFL's Green Bay Packers in the 15th round (173rd overall), but chose to head to Canada, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. This was an excellent decision, as he embarked on a 16 year career (1960 to 1975) of CFL greatness. In his early Tiger-Cat career, he was used mostly as a defensive back with a unique tackling style which relied on his skill in taking down players with body angle and leverage rather than brute force. In his later years with the Tiger-Cats, he played more as a receiver when it became obvious to everyone, coaches, players and fans alike, that he was a superlative offensive player. As a defensive back he intercepted 59 passes for 916 yards and 5 touchdowns, and was selected as an All Star nine times. An excellent two-way player, as a wide receiver he was an All Star for the 10th time in 1972. He also won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award that year in which the Tiger-Cats won the Grey Cup at their home field, Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario. No one who saw him will ever forget his playing style.
