Breaking  it  down  s  In  order  to  show  visual  elements,  I  have  collated  9

screenshots  and  annotated  them  to  help  better  understand  the  micro  elements.

Page 3: Taxi Driver - Title Sequence Analysis

s  Lead  actor,  iconic  well  known.  This  and  the  distributor  are  in  red,  different  to  the  rest  of  the  typeface  which  is  in  amber.  Red  is  above  amber  showing  how  distributor  and  lead  are  more  important.  There  is  also  silence  throughout,  making  the  viewer  concentrate  on  the  title.

s  Film  Name,  slides  in  after  the  taxi  appears  through  the  smoke  to  loud  crashing  music.  Taxi  moves  slowly  to  build  suspense.    The  text  itself  is  quite  large,  it  glows  and  fades,  similar  to  that  of  a  traffic  light.

s  Shot  of  smoke  is  continuing  bellow.  Supporting  actress  is  in  identical  typeface  to  the  film  title,  only  smaller  and  repositioned  to  top  left.

s  Shot  continues  but  the  actor  is  smaller  and  in  the  lower  portion  of  the  screen.  Showing  that  the  other  actors  are  dominant.

Page 7: Taxi Driver - Title Sequence Analysis

s  Extreme  close-‐up  of  the  characters  eyes,  the  music  is  very  calm.  The  only  source  of  lighting  is  from  oncoming  traffic  and  traffic  lights  from  above.  The  music  implies  that  what’s  going  on  around  him  is  very  busy  and  hectic  New  York  City  streets,  but  what's  going  on  in  his  head  is  very  calm.  Showing  that  the  character  may  be  hiding  something.

Page 8: Taxi Driver - Title Sequence Analysis

s  Less  important  roles,  there’s  more  text  on  the  screen  so  more  people  are  mentioned  in  less  time.  The  live  action    shot  itself  is  of  windscreen  with  city  lights  out  of  focus  and  wipers  are  in  focus,  shows  hustle  and  bustle  of  city  from  characters  view.  Music  is  building  up  again

s  Same  text,  small  so  it  fits  more  in.  The  shot  of  the  city  street  is  blurred  so  lights  are  mainly  visible.

s  The  final  title  text  for  director.  Martin  Scorsese  was  gaining  traction  as  a  famous  Hollywood  Director,  live  action  shot  of  people  crossing  road,  setting  scene  of  busy  street.

s  Back  to  calm  music  and  extreme  close  up.  The  character  is  calm  in  a  busy  environment.
