Tubes SBU of Tata Steel came into being in 1985,
after the merger of the erstwhile Indian Tube
Company with Tata Steel. Tubes SBU
manufactures commercial and precision tubes at
its two plants, namely, the Standard Tubes Plant
and the Precision Tubes Plant.
Tubes Strategic Business Unit of Tata Steel is the
largest manufacturer of a variety of steel tubes in
India with an annual production capacity of around
4,00,000 tonnes and major expansion plans to
manufacture higher sizes. The SBU has its plants
situated in Jamshedpur with a network of sales
offices across the country and its marketing
headquarters in Kolkata to provide better
customer service.
Production of Tata Structura Steel Hollow Section
begins with the setting of wide Steel Hot Rolled
Coils to the width required for production of
customer specific section dimensions. This slit coil
is then fed through the mill and is shaped into a
round tube by a series of forming rolls.
The converging strip edges of this round tube are
squeezed together and welded using high
frequency induction welding. Immediately after
this, the external excess weld bead is removed.
The tube then passes through a set of shaping
rolls where it is shaped to its final form of either
square, rectangle or circular and is exactly sized
to the required dimensions.
Cutting to the required length and bundling are the
final steps in this fully automatic process.
Presently Tata Structura Rectangular & Square
Steel Hollow Sections can be supplied to IS:4923
Grade Y 310 upto a maximum of
250 x 250 mm for square sections and
300 x 200 mm for rectangular sections. Circular
Sections can be supplied to IS:1161
upto a maximum NB of 300 mm.
However, with expansion plans, Tata Steel will be
able to augment the size range for
all sections.

Tata Structura : the winning edge
Besides bearing the trust and value of the Tata
Steel brand name, Tata Structura Steel Hollow
sections are advantageous from techno-economic
aspects as well.
The raw material used in manufacture comes from
the Tata Steel's world-class Hot Strip Mill.
The excellent distribution of material around the
axes of these steel hollow sections accounts for
unbeatable strength and other application
advantages. Unique features like high torsional
rigidity and compressive strength adds to better
efficiency than conventional sections. Higher
strength to weight ratio in these sections could
result in upto 30% savings in steel. Moreover, dust
accumulation is minimised due to smoothness and
uniformity of finishing.
Last but not the least, Tata Structura Steel Hollow
Sections enhance the aesthetic quotient of any
construction, thus adding to the appeal.
In the recent 3.0 MT expansion project at
Jamshedpur, renowned consultants
and have
extensively used Tata Structura for Conveyor
Structures, Plant Building, Pipe Line Supporting
Structures and Warehouses etc.

Conveyor Structures
Design of these structures with Tata Structura
proved to be more economical as the truss and
the girders are lattice construction and
compression is the governing criteria. Use of
gusset plate is minimum which adds aesthetics
to the overall structures.
Mass volume of material handling accounts for a
large percentage in the steel industry. According to
the flow of production the conveyor system
is used for :

Supporting Structures for Utility Pipe Lines
at 'I' Blast Furnace Diversion
Tata Structura sections were used for the 'I' blast furnace diversion. The
furnace, with a hot metal capacity of 3.05 MTPA was part of the brownfield
expansion in Jharkhand. The supporting structures for the diversion consist
entirely of Tata Structura pipes with a bridge span of 36.5 m.

Overhead Cable Gallery
The overhead cable gallery serves as the power distribution system from
MPDS-4 to MPDS-7 of the 'I' blast furnace 3.05 mt expansion project.
The entire length of the 29m span cable gallery was designed with Tata
Structura sections.
Foot OverbridgeOn railway track inside the steel plant
The foot overbridge, 4.0 meter wide and spanning 35 meter, has
eased the safe movement of 10000 workers who cross the most
hazardous rail tracks near the East Plant Drop Gate (EPDG) daily. At
Jamshedpur steel plant, Tata Structura has proved yet again that its
blend of aesthetics, weight to strength ratio and safety is much
superior to conventional structures. Total consumption of steel with
major usage of Tata Structura is approximately 250 mt (30% less
than conventional structural design) and has led to huge savings in
the project cost.

Application of Tata Structura in M.I. Section
Multi bay storage facilities were designed with the lattice construction with
chord members as SHS 91X91X4.5 and purlins as 122X61X3.6. This
design proved to be extremely useful and suited the purpose.
