AUSTRALIAN LONGLINE

Australian Longline, an innovative deep water fishing company based in Hobart, owns two longline vessels; the Antarctic Chieftain and the Antarctic Discovery. Both vessels operate in some of the harshest marine environments on earth between the 50th parallel and the Antarctic coastline, enduring icy conditions and terrible storms which in turn can be underpinned by the notorious, relentless Southern Ocean swell.

The Patagonian Toothfish that finally appears on the plate is testimony to the work ethic of our teams. This fish is one of the world’s great seafood delicacies, sought after for its firm, white flesh. The fisheries in which the company operates are managed in accordance with ecosystem-based measures set by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA). Full-time government observers are on board to monitor its practices, study the fish biology and continually assess fish stocks.

The high environmental standards that are delivered by our company and crews, combined with an ecosystem-based and precautionary approach to stock assessments have enabled the fisheries in which we operate to become certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Australian Longline has also been a partner in the drive to protect the fishery from illegal, unregulated and unrecorded (IUU) operators by working closely with Government and conservation groups and as an active member of the Coalition of Legal Toothfish Operators (COLTO).

AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY

The Bureau of Meteorology has a statutory responsibility for Australian meteorological activities in Antarctica.

It established a weather observing station at Australia’s Mawson base in 1954, and has compiled the longest continuous weather record on the Antarctic continent.

The Bureau maintains weather offices and year round observation programs at the three Australian Antarctic stations as well as at Macquarie Island station, with the meteorological activities of all the offices coordinated by the Bureau’s Tasmania and Antarctica State Office which is located in Hobart.

The Bureau provides a range of specialised Antarctic forecasting services to the Australian Antarctic Program, including providing weather forecasts for all its air, sea and land-based operations. Some of these operations are performed by our meteorologists at Casey and Davis stations during summer.

The Bureau can also provide comprehensive information on Antarctic climate data and weather forecasts and observations for the region.

The range of information includes:

• satellite imagery

• a catalogue of Antarctic climate data

• the latest observations from Australia’s Antarctic stations (updated hourly)

• mean sea level pressure and ocean wave height data.

In addition to its statutory and other government functions, the Bureau can provide specialist weather forecasting services to vessels at rates negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

The Marine National Facility (MNF) is a national facility funded by the Australian Government to conduct marine research for national benefit. Created in 1984, the MNF is a key element of Australia’s national research infrastructure and comprises:

• the multidisciplinary marine research vessel Investigator

• a suite of scientific equipment and instrumentation

• a collection of more than 30 years of marine data

• the expertise required to manage an ocean going research platform and support vessel users.

Investigator can operate anywhere in Australia’s vast marine estate - from ice edge to equator – and has an operational range of approximately 10,000 nm (at 11 knots). The vessel can accommodate up to 40 scientists, spend up to 60 days at sea at a time, and is capable of spending up to 300 days at sea per year.

Access to sea time on Investigator is provided through a competitive grant process and user funded arrangements. Granted sea time, funded by the Australian Government, is available to Australian researchers and their international collaborators.

The MNF is based at the CSIRO Marine Laboratories in Hobart, Tasmania. This is also the home port for the Investigator. The MNF is overseen by an independent steering committee, and owned and operated by the CSIRO.

In collaboration with a number of international communities, we have developed a Database of Upcoming Expeditions to the Southern Ocean (DueSouth), to better support collaboration in field planning. We have identified hundreds of moorings deployed in the Southern Ocean and are working to make the data from these moorings openly available. We have also delivered a data discovery tool “SOOSmap” that supports discovery of data by observational platform type or variable. All of these products are delivered through the SOOS website (www.soos.aq) as contributions to the 5-Year Implementation Plan, which has now been finalised and is openly available.

SOUTHERN WASTE SOLUTIONS

Southern Waste Solutions (SWS) is a waste management business owned and operated by four councils. Its main business is a regional landfill located near Copping, approximately 50 km east of Hobart.

The main landfill is fully lined and secure. Quarterly independent monitoring continues to demonstrate that it has not had any adverse effect on the environment.

The landfill also includes Tasmania’s only hazardous waste cell. This cell is significantly more secure than the main landfill, and is also of a more robust design than most similar facilities, ensuring that contaminants will not escape to the environment.

SWS is licensed to accept quarantine material, as well as hazardous waste, and so can offer a comprehensive service to those repatriating waste from Antarctica.

TASMANIAN MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is one of the oldest museums in Australia and has its origins in the collections of Australia’s oldest scientific society, the Royal Society of Tasmania, established in 1843.

Located on Hobart’s historic waterfront, Tasmania’s state museum is home to a diverse collection of treasures spanning art, history and science that are the starting point for telling unique Tasmanian stories. TMAG is widely recognised as the pre-eminent Antarctic collecting institution in Australia with the broadest collection of Antarctic material on display.

The museum is often the closest visitors will get to the frozen southern continent, thanks to the large interactive gallery Islands to Ice: the Great Southern Ocean and Antarctica, the state’s major Antarctic exhibition.

Out the window visitors can glimpse Australian, French and Chinese Antarctic supply ships, and inside they can discover the history and science of this remarkable region, including the oldest known Antarctic sled, penguins and real ice cores.

Islands to Ice examines the definitions, perceptions and mythology of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. It explores the places, the people, the creatures and the phenomena that make the great southern wilderness a world of its own.
