I guess that is probably Ian’s last ride on the Gasser & he should be a force to be reckoned with on the Ossa. Not many takers for clubman, but well done to Chloe for braving the steep terrain & taking out her customary win. I hear there are a couple of TY175s lurking in the wings, so hopefully we will be seeing Cheryl & Greg in the near future to help bolster the clubman ranks.

Cokers Road – 15th September 2013 (Tas Championship Round 8) Report, Results & Photos

A good trial was laid out with some tricky sections over rocks and logs and even the terrain between sections proved to be quite challenging in places. Thankfully the rain held off, scores were not too high. At the end of the day there were a few weary faces and plenty to talk about. A grade was won by Peter Lockhart, but both Peter & Kurt put in some great rides on the big rocks. B grade was taken out by Peter Bayles over Scotty Wellman, reversing the result from the last trial. Another good win in C+ for Mike Amey with Nigel 2nd & Mick Luscombe riding well to finish 3rd. Well done to Mike Travica for yet another win in C grade, closely followed by Ian Gabbedy.

Moira’s Mutterings. A big thanks to David Catt and Tim Mead who used their 4WD’s to take observers and spectators up the mountainous slope! Needless to say I was not impressed to reach the very peak, only to find the camera battery flat, entailing a walk all the way to the carpark and back to resume ‘shooting’. I also seem to have instigated a search for my casserole dish at Tim and Vonettes after the Brass Monkey Ride, having asked Pick to bring it home, only to find it sitting in my cupboard at home. Now I’m nervously waiting for the 3rd thing to go wrong….

Damien Langworthy clears one of the many tricky logs. The section checkers thoughtfully made sure that most logs had to be tackled on an angle which caused a few problems.

Kurt Pickering climbs this fearsome looking rock step for a clean. Both wheels are well off the ground as he clears the gap between a kicker rock & the main rock.

Not one of Neil Berne’s better days, but looking well in control here.

Ian Gabbedy ‘the quiet achiever’ on his way to a well earned 2nd place in C grade.

Scotty Wellman tackling a gnarly looking B grade section.

Mr.September – Nigel Munday

Nigel’s interest in riding trials was sparked in the late 1970’s having spectated at the Loyatea Australian titles, after which he bought and rode a 250cc Bultaco Pursang. In those days, David ‘Skippy’ Parsons and Owen Badcock were to the fore in Tassie - Nigel now possesses the 240 Fantic on which Owen won the Tasmanian title after restoring it, selling it, and re-buying it back again! Nigel then turned to motocross, sponsored by Wally Lunn. Like a lot of motor enthusiasts along the way, he progressed to cars and worked for a V8 supercar bloke looking after an ex-Seaton car, travelling to Phillip Island and Bathurst with Ray Hislop, taking great satisfaction from modifying the vehicle for optimum performance, but wishing he had stayed with motorcycles. He met Glen Seaton’s dad Barry and they got on well, stating that ‘Barry doesn’t suffer idiots and is not backwards in telling incompetent people to make themselves scarce!’ Nigel then built, drove, and rallied a Datsun 1600, competing with the NW Car Club, at Symmons and other venues.

After buying lots of old Ossa MX and trials bits and bikes, he then joined the Vintage Motocross Club and met our very own club founder Louis Stevens, so bought several more bikes off him over the years. Dean Medwin is responsible for getting Nigel back into trials on a 240cc Fantic, after which Nigel bought an ex-Owen Badcock twin shock 240 Fantic, a 305 Fantic, then a Scorpa off Peter Lockhart. What had been a hobby up until now turned into his job when in 2001 he took the plunge and became the Sherco Tasmanian dealer, adding Ossas in 2010. A fanatic of vintage Ossas, incredibly he has nearly every model ever made, some still in bits in boxes. His best trials result was winning C+ once, and has had numerous 2nds and 3rds, citing his trials highlight as riding 2 years ago in South Australia at the Australian Titles. Nigel credits ‘Pick’ with giving him the confidence to ride in the mainland, and now he loves the annual trek North and is looking forward to riding in Victorian Titles with Ian on 27th and 28th Sept, followed by the Aussie Titles a week later. Workwise he worked for John Humphries as a motorcycle mechanic in the early 80’s but it didn’t work out, so went to Hawkridge meats as an Export Boner for 17 years until the plant closed. Burnie Fuel Injection then had the benefit of his services, and gave him the opportunity to complete all the appropriate courses. A stint at BP Hilltop followed, before founding his own business in Cooee for 18 years. Family-wise, Nigel was born in Burnie and has always lived in NW Tas, has one younger sister and unfortunately lost a musician brother who Nigel describes as ‘a total opposite to me’. So how did the lovely partnership with Fiona come to be? Nigel was best mates with Fiona’s brother, went to a friends 18th and met Fiona, but admits a reluctance to pursue the friendship as he thought she was still at school. Discovering she was really in grade 12 at Hellyer College, this patient man then dated Fiona for 4 years while she completed her nursing training, and they have now been married 30 years. Fiona has raced in vintage MX and still has her RM100, and also occasionally rides a trials bike, taking to 2 wheels at the recent Brass Monkey gathering. She now works for Nigel 1 day a week doing his bookwork and tax, while Nigel takes care of the rest. Many of you have met their electrical technician son Mitchel who used to ride trials (until cars and girls took precedence!); unlike her brother, daughter Chelsea 23 left home, and now works in Hobart Woolies. Four cats and a border collie called Archie complete the home scene. Nicknamed “Fluffie” (after their overweight collie!!!), Fiona describes her husband as “a big softie”, expressing heartfelt gratitude that he is a teetotaler, thus avoiding the perennial discussion that other couple have “who’s driving home tonight dear?”. One of lifes highlights was an amazing trip to the Sherco factory in Spain, and the Sherco Enduro factory in France with Don Murray from Moto Central, “a real eye-opener” travelling to Andora for the Trial de Nations as part of the support crew for the Aussie boys and girls, also going to the world round in Zaragosa Spain. This trip included a lunch with Mark Toreso where neither Don or Nigel spoke Spanish and Mark didn’t speak English, but the translators did a mighty job. Breakfasting with Dougie and Martin Lampkin, and Dougies minder Aylie, Nigel was even hugged by Alberta Cabestany, met idols and generally spent the time ‘acting as awestruck as a teenager at a rock concert’. In his spare time, Nigel enjoys movies especially since installing surround sound at home. His dedication to the club can be summed up by Fiona who says “He loves the club…one torrential Sunday, I suggested that he didn’t have to go to the trial – this was a totally alien concept to Nigel who couldn’t imagine what on earth I meant!”. His final thoughts on the club…”People are so friendly, you can chat to anyone, no bickering or backstabbing, it’s a GOOD CLUB. I always like to try and encourage younger people to join and will go out of my way to help”.
