I have been teaching English at RBA since 2007 The ICFES exam results in English in the last two years were not satisfactory and in the year 2007 the school was not in a good position related to the other schools in the area and as it is known the institutions and the students are graded according to the these results Therefore the principal asked me to prepare the students for this exam sotaking into account that this exam is mostly related to reading comprehension I decided to focus the tasks in this skill I consider that if I make more emphasis in this ability I will help my students to improve their English level and in this way they will be at the level required(B1)

The tasksrsquo develop took place at Ricardo Borrero Alvarez a public and coed school located downtown that provides education for children and teenagers who belong to the low socio-economic strata (1 2 3 in a scale of 1 to 6) It supports the student with mild cognitive limitations moderate autism and hyperactivity The Educational Component makes emphasis in the multiple intelligences and the meaningful learningThe school has agreement with SENA and CUN university therefore the curriculum is related with hardware

CONTEXT

bullThe tasks were applied to students from tenth grade The number of students in the classroom is thirty eight They take the classes in the afternoon bullTheir ages range is between 13 to 19 bullTheir socio-economical status is between 1 and 2 therefore They belong to poor families with a lot of economical necessities bullThe students preferences are listening to music play soccer and hang out with their friendsbullThe students have a very low level of English They take three hours per week but they took only two hours a year ago They have some difficulties related to all the learning skills

OBJECTIVES OF THE TASKSbullDevelop studentsrsquoskills for the real world

bullUse authentic readings related with technology and apply the reading comprehension strategies explained by Larry Bell

bullImprove the reading ability

The tasks will take two hours of classFirst the teacher will ask the students which jobs they know related with computers They will answer in a varied way After that the teacher will show some pictures of people working with computers They will realize if they mentioned some of themThen the teacher will ask them if they know what a teleworker is It is possible that they will not know the answer Next they will read an authentic text related with teleworkers in which they will know that the advantages of computers -internet let these people work in their homes Teacher will tell students that they are going to read the text and that they will apply the reading comprehension strategies ldquoUNRAAAVELrdquo by Larry Bell(they have already worked with it they know what is it about and there are two posters on the classroomrsquos walls where is explained the strategy ) Students will follow step by step the strategiesFinally they will work in pairs and they will discuss about the advantages or disadvantages of been a teleworker

Technological advances have helped us to save time and effort in many areas of life At work we already appreciate such benefits as computerisation and fast communication via e-mail and satellites There is now a growing trend towards moving technology into our home and staying there to work A recent survey in the UK reported that one in five of the working population now spends at least part of the working week at home ldquoteleworking But how attractive and feasible is teleworking really

What are the advantages of teleworking British Telecom an employer who actively encourages its workers to work from home claims that people who work from home are up to 20 more productive than those in the office Having greater control over their working environment means that teleworkers are generally less stressed A report in 1994 found that teleworkers were considered to be more productive reliable and loyal than on-site staff The teleworker saves money on office clothes and on travelling costs (the average office-based worker spends 480 hours per year commuting the equivalent of 60 working days) The employer saves money too one company Digital who has one quarter of its workforce teleworking calculated that the cost of setting up an office at home for an employee approximately pound3500 was recouped within the first year And considering the 198 billion gallons of exhaust fumes every day produced from commuters cars there are also gains for society in general

Why is there a trend towards teleworking British industry is changing For instance screen-based service industries have been replacing the manufacturing industries Therehas also been a noticeable shift towards self-employment and people working on short-term contracts A lot of work is now contracted out to freelance workers In the USA environmental awareness has played a role The US Clean Air Act requires major employers to reduce the number of business journeys staff make into the office As a consequence giant companies such as ATampT and IBM have introduced an element of teleworking

Constantly improving technology supports this trend towards teleworking Thanks to new software coming onto the market the average PC will be able to automate phone dialling and act as an intelligent information centre for voice messages electronic mail and faxesThe futureEven though there are disadvantages such as teleworkers feeling isolated lonely and frustrated it seems that teleworking is here to stay Indeed it has been estimated that by the end of 1997 225 million people in the UK will be working from home for at least three days a week The figure will reach 5 million by the end of the century

TASK 2 Read the text and apply ldquoUNRAAVELrdquo reading comprehension strategiesHome comforts at work
