Task 7 Development

Page 2: Task 7

Here are some different fonts I have decided to experiment with for my master head. I will take these fonts into consideration when coming to produce my double page spread and I will chose one of these that best fits the criteria for Hip Hop Sub culture as this is what my broadsheet is going to be about. The majority of fonts I have decided upon are big and bold which is necessary as it’s the aspect that needs to stand out the most on the page for the reader to relate with and want to read the article.

To the right I have included some fonts that were assessable through Microsoft Power Point. These particular fonts I thought were appropriate for my theme of Hip Hop as well as being easy to read for the body of the article. Some of these fonts could also be used for page numbers, subheadings and/or anything that needs to stand out on the page for example, a pull quote. These fonts are all quite universal which is good in a way that it will all flow and fit in together with the images and the master head I decide to use.

Here are some sourced images from the internet that I will consider to use when producing my broadsheet page article. As the information and copy I will be using relates to hip hop music and is based on former singer ‘50 cent’ I need to be careful that the photographs that I choose do not contain any offensive imagery but are relevant to the article. It is important that I carefully chose a specific photograph that does not exceed the guidelines of what I will not be legally allowed to use for the audience as some of the photographs can be very explicit. In this case, explicit imagery will not be needed.

BroadsheetProduce a formal layout for a broadsheet newspaper, based on your written work for your broadsheet article from the Writing Copy unit. You should use your existing text and source appropriate imagery to support it. Where appropriate, additional stories or adverts can be added to the page, to suit the style of newspaper. You should produce flat plans prior to starting your production work. You should gather a range of suitable images. You should test and decide on appropriate font choices.

Page size should be 375mm x 597mm. Resolution should be 300 pixels per inch.

You should use your knowledge gained from different page layout tasks along with your understanding of the target audience to create the page layout.

You should take lots of screen shots during production to show how you have constructed your page and made your designs decisions

Page 9: Task 7

This is my broadsheet article that I have created using the program ‘InDesign’. This program is specifically used to create leaflets and layouts for things such as broadsheets and tabloids. Previously during this project I have used this program within my research to gain knowledge on layout and how to use the program which has helped me a lot. I have created my broadsheet to be from ‘the times’ newspaper. Using a master head for my broadsheet makes it look a lot more profession.al. I could have created my own master head and name for the newspaper but the time limit and contingency did not allow me to do so. The photograph I have included is the former singer ‘50 cent’. I have placed this in the middle of the page and enlarged it to be the biggest aspect. I have done this because it draws the attention of the readers with the vivid colours and the intriguing expressions and pose of the person in the photograph. Underneath the photograph is where I have placed the title of my article. I have used a font from Dafont.com which included a black background. This again is something unique and different that will make it appealing to the reader.

Page 10: Task 7

The title and the imagery takes up almost half of the page. I decided to do it this way because my article was not particularly long, and I needed the page to specifically focus on the one article. I placed the story in two columns below the photograph. I have used a drop capita to start the article off,. This is good for the reader as it allows your eyes to figure out where the start of the article is as there are many different aspects and text upon the page. This also helps the flow of the reader with a little bit of guidance. I have interpreted a pull quote into my article to make it seem and look more interesting to the audience. I have also used it on a specific part of text that the audience can relate to as well as making it more appealing by drawing the attention of the readers in. In some ways this can be one of the first bits of text that the audience will see, therefore it needs to be something that is intriguing and interesting for the reader to actually want to start reading the story.

Next to my article I found that while creating i had a lot of white space remaining to the right of the page. I did not have anything specific that I had planned to put in this space as I didn’t know that there was going to be any left. I decided to go through my research and look at what I had previously experimented on the program in design. A story that I have great knowledge of had been used several times throughout my research therefore I decided to fill the space with another story that will follow on through the newspaper to a different page. Using this makes the broadsheet look more professional and will also give the audience an incite to what else is in the newspaper.

At the top of the broadsheet article I have decided to add some information about a football article. I have done this because almost every newspaper has information about football which is usually at the back. During my research I found that various different stories and straplines were placed upon newspapers to draw every kind of reader into buying the newspaper. I have also included the price of the newspaper to the right and the date to the left; this again is something I discovered was on newspapers during my research stages.

Grids & Guides

The grids and guides helped me a lot during production of my broadsheet. It allowed me to create a unique but neat and professional layout which is what was intended in the brief. I kept to the specific requirements of the size which is 375mm x 597mm. I used an 8x8 grid that gave me the chance to input all the information accordingly. During production the 8 by 8 guides I used started off by being a set width apart of each other. I found that moving the guides around allowed me to input information in different places on the page that I would never have been able to exceed if I was to keep to the original 8 by 8.. For example, as you can see at the top of the page I have included information about football at the top, with the master head following on below with the date and the price of the newspaper. I had to move the guides around to make sure that it was all still neat and tidy and looking professional. The photograph was the first aspect that I inputted. This was because I knew I wanted it to be the largest aspect on the page therefore I needed it to fit a certain requirement for the other information to be able to fit around it.
