Aims and Considerations sheet Existing Products: How many existing artefacts do you feel you will need to look at? I feel like I need to look at least 4 different artefacts, this way I will be able to cover and understand all the purposes of different campaigns and can compare what techniques are good for the different type of purposes, this is essential because it will help create a better understanding ad also will be able to make the campaign suitable for the audience by learning the different techniques involved including what type of photography Is used, colour and fonts. What kinds of artefacts are you expecting to look at? Artefacts that I need to look at will include previous SAS work including posters, campaigns, merchandise and booklets and also similar work that could potentially help me with the work I will be producing including other surfer campaigns against the environment not been clean. I could also look at other campaigns simply to do with the environment being dirty and raising awareness about that. Other organisations including Greenpeace and marine stewardship could also help me with my research because these are similar organisations all targeting things against the environment. What elements will you look at to help you with your research? The elements I will look at to help me with my research are the photography. Photography is a main part of any campaign because it is the first thing you notice, immediately by looking at the image you will be able to know whether it is a positive or negative campaign. The quality of the photograph is important to capture the audience’s attention. Another element that I will be looking at is the fonts and the colour; these are also elements that capture the audience’s eye so it is essential to pick the right ones that go with the campaign. For example if the campaign is serious and about child abuse, it will usually contain black and white colours and simple fonts, to show the seriousness of the campaign. The logo and the positioning is another thing that I could look at because this is something that needs to be remembered by the audience, which makes the positioning and sizing of it important.

Aims and Considerations sheetExisting Products:

How many existing artefacts do you feel you will need to look at?

The quality of the photograph is important to capture the audiences attention. Another element that I will be looking at is the fonts and the colour; these are also elements that capture the audiences eye so it is essential to pick the right ones that go with the campaign. For example if the campaign is serious and about child abuse, it will usually contain black and white colours and simple fonts, to show the seriousness of the campaign. The logo and the positioning is another thing that I could look at because this is something that needs to be remembered by the audience, which makes the positioning and sizing of it important.

Considerations:

Why might you need to be sensitive when carrying out research on social action issues?

I will need to be sensitive when carrying out research because campaigns usually include serious issues that they care about which could potentially upset clients. This could be due to their own experience with the matter, however it could just come across as offensive to them. For example disability campaigns are sensitive. A way that I could be sensitive about it is apologising and explaining that campaign and why I would like to research about it.

Could you face any problems when trying to research social action issues? If so, is there a way to overcome these?Problems could include having the money and resources to set up meetings or focus groups, this could be overcome by raising the money, it is just time effective. Another problem that could be faced is

Where would you expect your finished pieces to be displayed and distributed? The finished pieces could be displayed online, around local places popular like shopping malls and also train stations. A good place to put them would be toilets and shopping places near the coast that way they apply to the surfers and ocean. Flyers of the posters could also be handed around the cost and close shops near, this is a good way of making people read the flyers because they are given them personally. Posting them through peoples letterboxes is also another way of doing this. A larger scale poster could be produced as a billboard above major roads leading to the seaside, these attract attention from most passengers of a car and would them give them awareness of the subject so that they would not litter near the sea, it would give them that to think about before entering the coast.

What funding issues might an organisation like Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) face? The SAS fund their organisation through membership subscriptions, individual and corporate donations, grant making bodies, profits from the sale of merchandise, supporter fundraising events and project sponsorship. Issues they might face are if people are not aware of the organisation they will not give donations, this way they have to spend a lot of money through campaigns and advertisement first to create awareness of the organisation first, which is costly. Creating a website and posting on social networking sites will benefit them a lot because it is free awareness to the public and as the internet is very popular it is most likely going to benefit the organisation. They need money to try and make the changes to keep the coast clean so this is an important issue for them.
