What is TASC?• The Test Assessing Secondary Completion is CTB/McGraw-
Hill’s high school equivalency test
• Accessible to the approximately 40 million adults in the U.S. without high school or equivalency diploma
• Measures readiness for college or workforce as outlined by the Common Core State Standards and relative to that of graduating high school seniors
• Examinee Cost - $0 in New York State

Measurement of Common Core State Standards
• TASC provides a transition to full Common Core State Standards (CCSS) over a three year window - 2014 to 2016
• TASC will increase the depth of knowledge level of items over time allowing states to gradually move from the essential concepts of the Common Core State Standards to a deeper level
• TASC supports adult learners and adult education centers as they shift from current preparation practices to those required for the full depth and breadth of CCSS

Test Administration Staffing• State or Area Administrator (GED Test Administrator)
– Responsible for the secure and legally defensible operation and administration of the TASC throughout the state or designated area
– Set the policy for staffing requirements
• Test Coordinator (GED Chief Examiner)– Responsible for supporting the State or Area Administrator in the conducting of
secure and legally defensible TASC administrations– Carries out the instructions provided in the Test Coordinators’ Manual
• Examiner (GED Examiner/Proctor)– Under the direction of the Test Coordinator– Responsible for carrying out the instructions provided in the Examiner’s Manual
including work during testing associated with the actual standardized and accommodated administration of the tests
– 1 Examiner per 20 test takers is required

Staffing Qualifications• All testing center staff should be trained in the administration
of secure, standardized tests in general and in the administration of the TASC in particular
• Qualifications of the Test Coordinator include:– Prior experience proctoring and administering tests– High school diploma or equivalent is required, a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
business experience is preferred– Strong communication and customer service skills– Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. on occasion– Experience in MS Office Suite, Window applications, Apple OS applications,
Internet and email– Ability to quickly troubleshoot computer and software issues while testing is
underway
Physical Layout of WorkstationsPBT
• Examinees should have sufficient space to allow for a private and secure testing environment
• Workstations should be outfitted with comfortable seating
• There should be sufficient tabletop space to allow the Examinee to work with scratch paper
CBT• Maximum number of computers for

Workstation Preparation
• Testing center should be a clean, well lit, quiet area that is free from distractions such as bells or telephones. It should also:– Provide a separate area for staff to work without distracting examinees– Provide adequate space for the Examiner to be able to monitor and
view the examinees at all times– Be arranged so students with accommodations will not distract or
affect administration procedures for others

Workstation Preparation
• Remove or cover all classroom visual aids such as wall posters or other items in the testing area that might provide answers to test questions
• Use a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door of the testing room
• On the board, indicate starting and stopping times for each testing session when applicable

Calculators• Calculators may be used for the Science test and the
second session of the Mathematics test– A calculator is available within the computer-based test
• ONLY Texas Instrument Model TI30XS calculators are permitted for the paper-based test and will be provided by the test center

Examinee Eligibility• Individuals are eligible to take the TASC if they are not
enrolled in regular high school and have not already received a high school equivalency diploma or have not already received a high school diploma recognized by NYS
• In order to take the test the Examinee is required to:– Be at least 19 years of age OR be at least 16 years of age and meet all eligibility
requirements as outlined in Commissioners Regulation 100.7– Be a NYS resident for 30 days– Have a valid, current, government-issued ID with a recent photo such as a
driver’s license, passport or U.S. Military ID

Plan Your Testing Schedule• Review the test and test directions in advance• Plan test administration accordingly for examinees
requiring accommodations• Allow sufficient time to fill in the examinee-identifying
information and complete the scheduled test(s)• Scheduled breaks are indicated in the specific
directions for each content area

Test Security• Electronic devices of any kind, such as cell phones, digital
cameras, handheld scanners, pagers, or games must be locked in a secure location prior to testing− Examinees should be notified of the policy prior to testing
• Examinees must not be exposed to the test questions or content before the actual testing
• The site must provide all testing materials, and no other materials may be permitted on the desk of the examiner
• Examinees should not share test questions or answers with other examinees when they have completed the test

Test Administration Protocols
• Following the instructions exactly ensures consistent testing conditions in all classrooms
• Test directions should be read as written• Assist Examinees with test-taking mechanics but take
care not to inadvertently give hints or clues that indicate an answer or help eliminate an answer choice
• Store materials in secure locked storage when they are not in use

Partial Test Takers• If an examinee only takes a partial test, stopping
midway due to illness or other interruption, then the test can be invalidated by the Test Coordinator
• Ensure that invalidated tests are marked clearly and submitted to the Test Coordinator– For CBT, check the box on the Subtest Details frame on the View
Status page– For PBT, fill in all of the circles for Questions 1 through 5 on the
Examinee Answer Booklet

Invalidation of Tests
• Special circumstances, interruptions, or distractions that affect individual or group performance can invalidate test results– A situation may occur in which an examinee had an invalidated test in
one content area, but valid test in the other content areas
• Report any irregularities or tests to be invalidated to your Test Coordinator and your State Administrator– After the testing session you will mark the invalidations– Examinees cannot retest with that form again; however, it does not
affect the overall score

Security Breach
• If a breach or potential breach in security is suspected, the Examiner should immediately inform the Test Coordinator
• The Test Coordinator should investigate the situation and if a breach is still suspected, the State/Area Administrator and CTB/McGraw-Hill should be notified

Concluding the Test Session• Collect all test booklets and test tickets (for CBT) • Collect and securely dispose of scratch paper• Carefully review student demographic and test form
information for accuracy– Ensure that the appropriate test format and accommodations have
