ALTERNATIVE TAROT SPREADS The following are alternative patterns for laying out the Tarot cards when using them either for divinatory purposes or for personal meditation. Whether you believe in cartomancy or not, the Tarot can make a nice

system for self-reflection upon troubling issues . . . as long as one takes it with a grain of salt. There are literally hundreds of Tarot patterns or spreads - you will find alternative interpretations and layouts for many of these. Use the one you are most comfortable with.

CELTIC CROSS SPREAD

The most common 'spread' for Tarot readings is called the 'Celtic Cross' . It's usually described in the booklet that comes with most Tarot decks, but just for completeness, the most traditional interpretation and layoutlooks like this:

[4] [10][5] [S] under [1]&[2] [6] [9]

[3] [8][7]

S. Significator - card representing the querent. (Man = King, Woman = Queen; Children = Knights or Maidens; Wands = medium coloring, good intellect, Cups = fair & friendly, Swords = dark & stern,Coins = very dark & down to Earth, or querent's choice).

1. Represents where the querent is at the time of the reading.

2. Lies across 1. and represents what holds the querent where they are.3. Represents the 'base of the question' - why it is being asked .4. Represents how the querent has been thinking about the question.5. Represents the 'recent past' (usually considered as 1-3 months)6. Represents the 'near future' (ditto)7. Represents what the querent has to bring to the situation.

8. Represents what the situation has to offer the querent .9. Represents the querent's innermost hopes and/or fears.10. Represents the final outcome of the situation, unless deliberately changed.

THREE-CARD SPREAD

[1] [2] [3]

1. Represents the past of the question.2. Represents the present state.3. Represents the probable future.

EVERWAY PYRAMID SPREAD

[6]

[4] [5][1] [2] [3]

1.  Past forces involved with the question.2.  Present forces involved with the question.

3.  Future forces involved with the question.4. Virtues - forces working for the questioner.5.  Faults - forces working against the questioner.6.  Fate - the probable outcome.

ELEMENTAL SPREAD [1]

[4] [5] [2][3]

1.  Earth (I have): Family, posessions, physical health, and wealth. Usually, a place where the problem begins.

2.  Fire (I will ): Will, ambition, aggression. Usually, how the querent's desires affect the problem.3.  Air (I think ): Thoughts, communications, society, travel. Usually, secret knowledge about the problem, or a place where the querent must go in order to solve the question.4. Water (I feel ): Dreams, intuitions, emotions, love. How the problem affects the querent or the querent's loved ones.

5. Outcome: The resolution of these things.

SEVEN CARD CIRCLE SPREAD

This spread is primarily for "Yes" or "No" questions. You will use 7 cards for this reading, and position them in a circle like a clockface that is six cards around, the seventh ca rd is placed in the middle...here is a crude

ascii picture of it, yours should look like a circle, but this is the general idea:

Optionally, you may place cards "8" and "9" in as shown, this is something I have done to the original layout which I finds help me when the circle is otherwise vague (if using cards 8 and 9, I like to call it the

"diamond of divination" as it then turns into a diamond)

[1][6] [2]

[8] [7] [9]

[5] [3][4]

Here are the meanings, in brief of the cards:

1. The querent's past state.2. The querent's present state.3. The querent's foreseable future state.4. The querent's obstacles. What the querent must "master" or "overcome" to solve his question.

5. The affects of the querent's environment .6. Opposing forces that are involved.7. The final "answer ".8. / 9. (optional ) ~ Are more "fine" details about the final result or problems at hand.

FOUR CARD SIMPLE QUESTION SPREAD

Here is another spread good for "simple" questions.

[5][1] [2] [3] [4]

[6]

1. The querent's past state.2. The querent's present state.3. The querent's future state.4. The outcome - what will come5. / 6. (optional ) ~ More details on "what will come".
