Letter from the TWR President Continued but in reviewing the year's accomplishments you can see that it has in fact been very productive. It also is a time to look around us and recognize the hard work and dedication that those involved dedicate to this effort. We are tremendously blessed with a strong network of volunteers. These volunteers donate their personal time and money. They foster dogs, transport dogs, keep us organized, notify us of dogs in need, arrange events, find benefactors, find adopters and step in with funds to help cover vet and boarding expenses. We are truly blessed with some of the most generous and unselfish volunteers and benefactors who make it all happen. My thanks to all of you who helped throughout the year. Rescue Report: Happy New Year everyone! We are very happy to report that over 70 dogs were placed in their forever homes in 2014 and about the same number were taken in during the year. We are also very pleased to have received over 200 adoption and foster applications during the year. Senior dogs, especially those with health issues, are frequently more difficult to place. Fortunately 15 families recognized how special these seniors are and brought them into their lives. Accepting heartworm positive dogs continues to be an ongoing problem, and we currently have five dogs being treated for HW that will be ready for adoption upon completion of treatment.

During the months of December and January, we took in 12 dogs and adopted 4. Unfortunately two of those 12 are HW+. Recent adoptions include Brandy who has now joined the RV-ing life, and recently enjoyed her first big road trip with her new family and 9 month old Weim sister. Her family found out that she is afraid of thunderstorms, may have a little separation anxiety, and barks when someone walks by the RV. They also described Brandy as very needy, but she is getting much more secure every day. She is enjoying a lot of totally new experiences and is doing well, learning all her commands well, and gets along great with her sister. Axel lived his entire life in an outdoor kennel, and now has a wonderful life as a housedog where he was meant to be. Although he is still a little timid, especially around strangers, he is adjusting well. He has adjusted to a crate, and his initial separation anxiety has markedly improved. When his Mom gets home in the afternoon, he is so happy to see her and ready for whatever new fun activity is in store for him. He especially enjoys riding in a golf cart with his nose in the air sniffing all the wonderful smells. He has also decided that the golf cart is his bed in the workshop while his Mom is painting. He loves to ride in their Jeep, and it took no time to get him to jump in and out of it. He has a bed in almost all the rooms in the house (he will not leave Mom’s side when she is at home). When she watches TV he lies on his bed on the floor in front of her so she can pet him while he dozes off. Axel is so fortunate to have found this wonderful family.

At almost age 10, Shea lost her original family when one of the children was diagnosed with Leukemia. She was taken in by a friend of the family who kept her for a year until she had her own baby with a severe health defect requiring surgery. Shea was adopted by the same wonderful lady that adopted two senior dogs with health issues in 2013, both of whom subsequently died. Sweet Shea is enjoying her new life on the SC coast, and is bringing immense joy to her new owner. Shea’s Mom put it beautifully: “She continues to be the best dog ever! To me, a ‘dream dog’.”

Livy got the ultimate Christmas present – her forever home. Livy came from a shelter in Northeastern NC, and spent several months boarding while undergoing HW treatment. Her new family reports that she is getting along great, and is fitting into their home really well. She and her big sister Bailey are getting along quite well. Livy enjoys her walks and is learning to play fetch. She loves all of her toys and her bed so much. True to breed, she is becoming quite the Velcro girl too! When she had her first bath she loved getting her hair dried with the hair dryer. Her adopters also report that selecting photos to share was difficult because “she is just too cute!”

Zeus was with his owner when she died, and they weren’t found for several days. He was boarded for months at a vet’s office in GA while under the care of an all-breed rescue. They reached out to neighboring Weim rescues since they were not having much luck finding his forever home, and we agreed to take this boy. Zeus and his new Mom enjoy visits to local dog parks on Sundays and long runs in the woods and up the mountains on quieter days of the week. He is social with dogs and people, and doesn't always have to be top dog. Although he doesn't really like sharing (anything - space, bed, people), he graciously accepted two Poodle houseguests for a couple of weeks, and seemed to miss them when they left. His Mom is still working on his separation anxiety and accepting the cats. He is extremely athletic and powerful, and he has become trim and fit since he arrived in November. His owner sums it up nicely: “I am very happy he has joined me here in Virginia, he is a lovely boy.”

Tess first came to us in 2012 from a shelter in northeastern NC. She was treated for heartworms and ultimately adopted several months later. Unfortunately, she was returned because she and the family cat were not getting along well (cat ran from her). Her second home was with a wonderful family, and Tess had two male siblings. Due to family health issues, one of the dogs needed to be re-homed. Although they loved her very much and it was extremely difficult for them, they decided to give up Tess to a new home because the males were closer in age and played so well together. Tess gets along with other dogs, but is not very playful, is somewhat timid, is very reserved, and is harder to get to know. We are happy to report that Miss Tess is getting along very well with her new family, and gets more relaxed each day. She is getting more adventurous, exploring a little more, and gets along great with siblings Stanley (adopted from TWR in 2011), an Italian Greyhound, and a Siamese cat. Tess is working on getting over her fear of the pet door, and one day soon will follow her siblings out the door without hesitation. When her family comes home from work, Tess dances back and forth on her front feet, body trembling with excitement, paws up on the front porch begging for attention, and sometimes literally jumping all four paws up off of the ground with pure excitement. Her timidity has even brought out the best in Stanley. He is fearless for her sake, and his level of obedience has become almost immaculate. Her family is very patient and is working with her at her own pace so that she gains confidence. Oh, and they absolutely adore Tess. Thank you, Cindi Caravati, for your gracious donation to rescue. And thanks to TWC club members for your continued “brags” donations. TRACKING: Chair Cindi Caravati said that the TWC TD/TDX Tracking Test will be held in Alton, Va on Sunday, Jan.18, 2015. AKC Rep Carol Rothenburg will be attending. Judges will be Tony Hinson and Michelle Gillette (in place of our wounded Jack Sappenfield). Entries are in and we had 2 TDX and 8 TD entries compared to last year’s 2 TDX and 1 TD. AGILITY: Chair Jack Sappenfield said that the Agility Trials are schedules for July 17-19, 2015. They will be held at Bon Clyde Center in Sanford, NC. The meeting was suspended from 6:59 pm to 7:55 pm as our dinner was served. HOSPITALITY: Chair Lucy Sappenfield said that we cannot go to Backyard Bistro for our dinner following the March Specialty Show as there is a conflict with a hockey game nearby and the Bistro will be too crowded. We will have the dinner at another site with a different menu, to be announced shortly. RESCUE: Kathy Page reported that 70-80 Weims went through Rescue last year. Total currently pending dogs are 17. That included one in permanent foster care and two in the adoption process. Five are currently in heartworm treatment; three have completed heart worm treatment. Kathy says it is unlikely that “Bark Around the Park” will be held this year either. MEMBERSHIP: Sharon Cafeo was elected into membership. She is a returning member. Membership applications from the following were read: Denise McDonald, Paula Adkins, Belinda Reynolds. There was no new or old business to come before the Club. ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS: As there was no opposition to the slate presented by the Nominating Committee, the President directed the Secretary to cast the Club’s vote for the slate. Elected were President Jack Sappenfield II, Vice President Stacy Libow, Treasurer Helen Sanderford, Secretary Henrietta (Rusty) Jenrette and Board Betta Breuhaus, Steve Briggs and Carol Parron. The new officers assumed their offices immediately. The President announced a Board Meeting on Feb.7 at Rusty’s home. The Tarheel Weimaraner Club’s TD/TDX Tracking Tests were held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015 in Alton, VA. Except for some early morning showers on Sunday, we were fortunate to have a sunny and not too chilly weekend up in Alton, Virginia for our judges, tracklayers, club volunteers and exhibitors. Our judges were Michele Gillette and Tony Hinson. Michele came to the event’s rescue by filling in last minute for our Jack Sappenfield who, as many of you may know, jumped out of an airplane in early November and shattered his ankle upon landing on earth (yes, he was wearing a parachute). As in past tests, they did an exceptional job, efficiently plotting fields on Saturday with our tracklayers and exhibited complete professionalism with testing on Sunday. As a bonus, they were joined both days by AKC representative Carol Ruthenberg and apprentice judge Jeff Telander, who was testing

for his TD judgeship. It was a pleasure meeting Carol, who provided valuable knowledge and assistance throughout the weekend. Also, judge and Club member Gretchen Stephenson travelled several hours to volunteer for the weekend. For me, it was like having a “dream team” of tracking experts assisting with the event! In contrast to low entries last year, we had 4 TD exhibitors (1 Weimaraner) and 4 TD alternates and 1 TDX exhibitors (Weimaraner) and 1 TDX alternate. The handler/dog teams put in great effort on test day, producing one TD title. The TD title went to Caisson’s Frozen Scarlettini at Da-Jo (German Shepherd, Bitch), handled by her owner, Julie Degen. The spectators were excited to witness this team obtain the title. Congratulations to Julie and “Scarlett”! Of course this event could not take place or be a success without our team of dedicated volunteers. THANK YOU to our tracklayers: Chief Tracklayer Larry Edwards, Louisa Arendt, Gretchen Stephenson, Denise McDonald, Lisa Rowden, and cross trackers Cindy Wright and Lucy Sappenfield. Special thanks to Carol Parron, my “crowd control officer” and her “dog control officer” Zana Schepis. And thank you to Jack Sappenfield who hobbled along with me as special council on testing day. I received a note from Judge Michele Gillette shortly after the event which read “Once again, I have to thank the great folks at TWC for an enjoyable tracking weekend. The club members worked hard and long to ensure the best experience for the exhibitors. Special thanks to tracklayers Larry, Lisa, Denise, Gretchen and Louisa and cross trackers Cindy and Lucy. TWC deserves a special thanks for consistently providing support for the sport of tracking through almost a decade. Bravo!” I couldn’t have said it better. And I encourage more Club members come out to participate or spectate next year! Cindi Caravati TWC Test Secretary/Chair

TWC held a very successful Shooting Ratings on Friday January 30th at the Hearne’s’ property in Snow Camp, NC. We had 10 dogs entered and had 2 SDX qualifiers (Lina & Breeze), 3 SD qualifiers (Flick, Lizzy, & Kaylee) and 1 NSD qualifier (Gucci). Thanks again to Phil and Karen Hearne for allowing us to have the Ratings there. Phil Hearne and Mike Flock were our judges; our secretary was Helen Sanderford, our WCA Rep Betta Breuhaus, and Chair Rick Yates. Ross Adams, Rick Yates, and Steve Briggs were our gunners, and bird planters Kevin Perez, Rosi Adams, and Christine Flock. Thanks to everyone that entered and to everyone who helped!

TWC’s annual hunt tests were January 31 and February 1 at the grounds of Phil and Karen Hearne, in Snow Camp, NC. We again filled and had a waiting list. We were worried about the weather – it had been very wet leading up to the tests, but in the end we had two decent days. Again, a LOT of people contributed to the success of our hunt tests and I am so grateful to everyone who helped. Our judges this year were Joe Stringer and Carol Parron on Saturday, and Phil and Karen Hearne on Sunday.

Chairman for the first time this year was Steve Briggs. Steve also served as our head bird wrangler, arriving early each day to catch birds so we could start on time. Our hunt test committees consisted of Steve, me, Christine and Mike Flock, Kevin Perez, Rick Yates, and Helen Sanderford. We had GREAT support from gunners (and great gunning too): Steve Briggs, Joe Zawadowski, Charlie Parron, Rick Yates, Ross Adams, and Rock Rothrock.

Our bird planters were Kevin Perez, Rosi Adams, and the gunners.

Sally Feltner, Christine Flock and Helen Sanderford helped run the line. Thanks to Joe Stringer for bringing his horses for Saturday, and Phil Hearne for using his horses on Sunday. A number of our TWC club members and friends got legs, which is what it is all about !!!!! Individual successes are recorded in the Brags section. Huge THANKS to all who helped.
