Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Reality star Kim Kardashian and rap artist Kanye West paired up in 2012 to form the popular, ego-driven duo referred to as “Kimye.” The two had been friends for many years prior to their relationship, but in April 2012, they decided to take their relationship to the next level. After millions watched Kardashian marry basketball player Kris Humpheries and then call off the marriage after only 72 days, most wouldn’t expect Kardashian to rush into another serious relationship. Although there have been tons of engagement rumors flying around the tabloids, Kardashian won’t be marrying any time soon, but wedding or not, Kardashian announced in late December that she and West are expecting a baby.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling. These two big screen actors are quite possibly the most attractive Hollywood pairing. Ryan Gosling is notorious for his good looks and charm, but unfortunately, for all those drooling women across the world, Gosling is very taken. The lucky and beautiful Eva Mendes has been dating Gosling since they were first brought together on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in the summer of 2011. Although this couple likes to keep most of their personal lives out of the spotlight, there is definitely long-term potential for this gorgeous couple.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. We first fell in love with Kunis and Kutcher’s characters on the set of the popular sitcom, That ‘70s Show, nearly 14 years ago. Jackie, played by Kunis, and Kelso, played by Kutcher were always in an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the series. Kunis told People magazine that she used to have a big crush on Kutcher during the show. And coincidentally enough, Kunis’s first kiss was with Kutcher on the set of the show. Although they were never romantically involved off the set at that time, the opposite is true now. The couple have been together since April 2012 after Kutcher ended his marriage with actress Demi Moore, and the future looks promising for this young and lovable celebrity couple.

Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest. Despite their 13-year age difference, this gorgeous couple has been going strong for over two and a half years. Hough and Seacrest first met in 2007 when the sets for Dancing with the Stars and American Idol were just across the hall from each other. Seacrest is constantly busy, hosting both his radio show and American Idol, while also producing numerous reality shows such as Keeping up with the Kardashians and juggling tons of projects on the side, while Hough keeps herself busy with acting and dancing. With so much going on in this power-couple’s life, their relationship has to be strong to last.

Kirsten Stewart and Robert Pat-tinson. The famous Twilight couple on and off the screen is still going strong into 2013, despite their recent bump in the road. After Stewart admitted to having an affair with her married Snow White and the Hunts-man director Rupert Sanders, Stewart and Pattinson broke off their relationship, only to get back together a few months later in November 2012. They made their first ap-pearance as a couple at The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 premiere in Holly-wood. Apparently Pattinson wasn’t ready to throw away his four-year relationship with Stewart just yet; 2012 may have been a bit rocky, but 2013 is a chance for the couple to start fresh again.

Rihanna and Chris Brown. One of the most talked about celebrity relationships is the ever-changing status of Rihanna and Chris Brown. We loved to love this couple back in 2007 when they first started dating, but after Brown allegedly beat Rihanna in 2009 and the couple split, it seemed like there was no chance that these two artists would rekindle the flame. Apparently, our assumptions were wrong. The couple started attending awards shows and parties together in early 2012 and became more public with their relationship as the year continued. Despite the public’s mixed feelings about their relationship, it seems that they aren’t letting anyone’s opinions get in the way of their feelings for each other.

Will these couples last? Will any of these gorgeous celebrity duos tie the knot in 2013? All we can do is wait and watch to see how these relationships pan out. This year is sure to be packed with lots of juicy celebrity couple drama. Be sure to follow these six hot Hollywood couples for entertainment, advice and maybe even a happily ever after. <

> We fall in love with celebrities for their good looks, their role model tendencies, and their luxurious lifestyles, which include expensive clothes, extravagant homes, and an exciting and sometimes fairytale-like love life. We love to love the hottest celebrity couples, and love to hate them when-ever they make a wrong move. Following their love life journey from first dates, to split-ups, to marriages can at times be more exciting than the celebs’ career itself.

In 2012, we watched as celebrities fell in love and tied the knot, including Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, and Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey, and also couples who fell out of love and had to split, like Katy Perry and Russell Brand, and Heidi Klum and Seal. Some celebrity relationships seem like a match made in heaven, while others have had a bumpy ride on their relationship rollercoaster. Regardless, these six couples are the hottest Hollywood couples of 2013.

> Tampa Bay is a place where a mix of ethnic groups and cultures create a melting

pot of inspiration. Ethnic influences flavor the music we listen to, the food we eat,

and even the clothes we wear. Stroll through Ybor City and see the Cuban influence

in the white peasant blouses embroidered with touches of red, yellow or turquoise

or in the guayabera shirts, also known as “the Havana shirt.” Pleats, drapes, and one-

shoulder tops and dresses reflect the influence of the Greek community in Tarpon

Springs. People are proud of their heritage, and it shows. Why not? Our diverse

backgrounds have so much to offer. Incorporating one or two of these flavors into

your existing wardrobe is a great way to update it and add color.

Talented fashion designers get their inspiration from many sources, including their

ethnic origin or culture. One of my favorites is Oscar de la Renta, who was born

FashionBy Ro Martinez

Ethnic-Inspired

STYLE :: 21

in the Dominican Republic. Heather Berkowe, an eHow Contributor, wrote;

“Oscar de la Renta mixes ethnic detail into every collection. This ethnic detail

could be chunky necklaces in sea colors, as in his Spring 2011 collection, or the

Mongolian print and weaves in the Fall 2011 collection. The silhouettes also

convey his ethnic flair.”

Ricky Lindsey, one of our own Tampa Bay designers who designed the photo-

graphed ruffled dress, beautifully captured the Latin influence reminiscent of

my flamenco dancing days. He added full ruffles in several colors to the fitted

bodice, creating a hot sizzling design. This dress can be worn as is or with a lace

bolero-style jacket. He shared, “When I designed “Esperanza” I was inspired by

the exotic flare of the Spanish Culture. I wanted to create something beautiful,

interesting, and unique, yet true to the Spanish influence. The cascading layers

of ruffles create a texture and silhouette that I feel represents Spain while the

color palate and fabric put a twist on the traditional Spanish style.”

The classic style of ethnic clothing stands the test of time and is always in

fashion. It can make an old piece look current and feel like a new one. What

constitutes ethnic flavor? The color, fabric and silhouette used to create indig-

enous clothing, costumes and everyday wear. Kimono sleeves or mandarin col-

lars in silk fabrics have an Asian influence. Hand-knitted sweaters or ponchos

or bright colored ruffled off the shoulder tops are reminiscent of Central and

South America. Bright, colorful embroidered tunics have Indian origins. Mixing

an Asian silk jacket with jeans or wearing a bright tunic over a black pencil skirt

and black tights is a great look without having to wear ethnic clothing from

head to toe. Coordinated with simple accessories, this way of dressing may be

appropriate for the office, casual weekend or vacation.

What better way to accessorize the little black dress than with an ethnic-

inspired piece, or several pieces if you are feeling creative? A sarong may be

draped around your shoulders and used as a shawl on cool nights. Chunky hand

crafted jewelry can add color around your neck, wrist or waist. A one-of-a-kind

handcrafted handbag in natural materials can finish your look. Do not be afraid

to mix different accessories together. These pieces can be inexpensive and

picked up at local boutiques or abroad when traveling on business or vacation.

With so many options, you can create an original outfit so you will never see

yourself coming or going. Ethnic accessories don’t go out of style, so you can

wear them for a long time. This makes for a sound investment.

Love makes the world go around -- love of fashion, love of style and love of all

things ethnic. It is a small world after all, chica! <

> We all know that while 2012’s holiday

season was exciting, it was rife with stress and

frustration. However, the Tampa area was quick

to offer a remedy to these inevitable feelings by

hosting five amazing events. In true Floridian

style, the Hillsborough River celebrated twenty

years of the Ken Walter’s Annual Roosevelt Row-

ing Regatta. While our relatives to the North

were shoveling snow and bundling up by their

fire places, Tampa residents gathered around the

est intercollegiate sporting event of the season.

Free admission to the event allowed spectators

to enjoy the Rowing Races for free while en-

joying the soulful sounds of Lisa Casalino’s Jazz

Trio. Saturday’s festivities lasted from 10 a.m. to

4 p.m. and continued on to Sunday afternoon

with compelling paddleboard, kayak, and dragon

boat races. Also, in keeping with the West Coast

theme, an award was handed out for the event’s

imaginative Seafood Challenge. Competitors

dove into a variety of delicious offerings pro-

vided by local vendors such as Fountain Square

Restaurant & Bar, Hula Bay Bar & Grill, Lob-

ster Pot, Mangroves Bar & Grill, The Manhattan

Dolce Bar & Bistro, 717 South Restaurant & Bar,

Taps Restaurant & Bar, Timpano Chophouse &

Martini Bar, and Wimauma Foods Restaurant &

Bar. Mayor Bob Buckhorn enthusiastically ex-

pressed that the Rigatta “is a win, win…a trifecta

for Tampa.” While this event was in celebration

of the sport of rowing, an extraordinary $15,000

cumulative in-kind donation was collected for

the All Children’s Hospital and the American

Cancer Society as a result of commendable gen-

erosity. With the many interactive games and

ice-skating enjoyed by everyone, this event was

full of fun, sun, and much needed relaxation.

From fast paced water vehicles to beautiful land

automobiles comes the Tampa Bay International

Auto Show. Hundreds of intriguing 2014-model

cars, trucks, sport/utility vehicles, and crossovers

drove into the Tampa Bay Convention Center

December seventh through to the ninth. Manu-

facturers from Aston Martin to Toyota proudly

showcased their up and coming rides to specta-

tors who were eager to sit behind the wheels of

these freshly painted beauties. Not only were

the cars a beautiful sight, their makings under the

hood were available for exploration, granting all

access to every inch. To sweeten the deal of the

occasion, well-versed representatives from vari-

ous manufacturers answered numerous ques-

tions and contributed facts about their models.

The nation’s largest auto show producer, Motor

Trend Auto Shows, facilitated a spectacle sure

to please any automobile enthusiast, allowing all

attendees a sneak peek into 2014’s newest must

have transports.

The show didn’t stop with the automobiles in

the Bay area this holiday season. The record-

breaking Broadway smash Wicked danced onto

the stage of Carol Morsani Hall’s Straz Center

on January ninth through to the twenty-seventh.

The music and colorful set made us feel as if we

traveled to Oz along with Glinda the Good and

the Wicked Witch of the West. Christine Dw-

yer shined as the misunderstood beauty born

with emerald green skin, singing her way into

the hearts of all who attended the show. Elphaba

may have publicly fallen from grace, but her ride

to the bottom had all “dancing through life.”

Jeanna de Waal gloriously performed as the

sweet and good-hearted enchantress who butts

heads with Elphaba (Dwyer) on political and

emotional dealings. Show goers enthusiastically

welcomed the cast onto the stage and walked

out feeling as if they too could defy gravity.

The music in Tampa was not only sung by a

tortured green skinned beauty, but also by the

performers at an intimate musical affair held

in Culbreath Isles. On January twenty-third

Elegant Evenings presented its Opera Night, a

serene event put on by private home owners

in the South Tampa area. Upon arrival, concert

devotees were offered delicious appetizers and

wine that could satisfy anyone’s taste buds to

accompany the engaging sounds of the night’s

vocalists. The music’s addicting quality had the

audience wanting more while applauding the

talents of each musician present on this truly el-

If a relaxing night was not in your itinerary this month then maybe

Oh Sweet Valentine!

Proving Men Really Aren’t the Dominant Sex

By Jessica Sanchez

Read more at:StyleToMe.com

> It is, perhaps, the one day of the year when a woman can truly feel comfortable re-vealing those innermost feel-ings that are often hidden in the depths of her most wishful thinking heart. It’s usually done with a card and it’s difficult to explain. But I’ll go ahead and try anyway: in return, we ex-pect our significant other to buy us lots of pointless things as an expression of his love. Or, at the very least, his effort. A good-faith effort. This year, in keeping with the 21st century fashion trend of finally caring about the environment, there are many environmentally con-scious options, but I’d shy away from the Elephant Poo Flow-

ers. Really. They are exactly what it says they are. In fact, the selling point is, “Send your Valentine recycled elephant poop” shaped like roses. These should only be given when all efforts to remain single have failed.

I think we can probably all agree that Valen-tine’s is a day shamelessly exploited by wom-en (and Hallmark), but in doing so women find themselves in a catch-22. It is a holiday defined by chocolate, flowers, jewelry, and teddy bears, but these are the four things that top a man’s list of “Gifts That Are Less Useful Than a Toothpick.” So begs the ques-tion: what do you get your boyfriend/fiance/husband/guy-you’ve-only-known-for-two-weeks-but-it’s-going-very-very-well-and-could-turn-into-something-more-serious-thus-making-Valentine’s-Day-all-the-more-nerve-wracking-and-uncertain?? A woman would find it absolutely unconscionable to wrap an automatic-adjustable wrench in pretty pink paper attached to a heartfelt

Hallmark card. That’s because a wrench - by its very nature - goes against everything Valentine’s stands for: reason and practi-cality. It would be the kind of sensible gift that would tickle the corners of your man’s heart, but romance and common sense go together about as well as Nancy Pelosi and Republicans. If they didn’t then every woman reading this would’ve fallen head-over-heels for the first man who bought her those much-needed brake pads. Instead you swooned over that heart-shaped necklace from Tiffany’s that turned out to be a $25 knock-off (I’m serious. Google it.) The brake issue - and I know from experience - can be temporarily fixed by simply turning up the music in your car.

So what is the perfect gift for the perfect man? I couldn’t tell you. There’s no such thing as a perfect man. Ha! I kid, I kid. But really, somehow I have managed to get out of the gift-giving trauma of Valentine’s for several years now. It might have to do with the highly contagious virus going around Tampa known as Singlitis: the absence of a permanent mate. Symptoms include work-ing out to the point of obsession, dress-ing like you’re 21 again, and spending gross amounts of money on happy hours. I guess it beats spending money on a holiday that only proves men really aren’t the dominant sex. If they were we would be celebrating St. Joseph’s Day, the patron saint of carpenters, and tools would be the perfect gift. <

Hilton Orlando’s Executive Sous Chef Thomas Huebner

“Mad Scientist” or Chef?

Hilton Orlando is known for its creativity when it comes to food and drinks. The culinary team is always looking for ways to impress guests with their unique creations and preparation methods. Chef Thomas Huebner is one of the advocates for this creativity and recently spent some time talking about one of his favorite culinary tools.

Why do they call you the Mad Scientist?Because I am mad about great food. One of my favorite techniques is using liquid nitrogen which is 321 degrees below zero. I call it anti-cooking.

What is your Chef story?I come from Austria and started by learning pastry which Austria is famous for. Recently, I was promoted to Hilton Orlando’s Executive Sous Chef which is not only a great honor but very unusual for a Pastry Chef. Now I am involved in all aspects of the kitchen from what comes in the back door to what arrives before the guest.

You are married to a Chef. Is that chemistry too?Yes, my wife is a Chef and she does all the cooking at home. We cannot be in the kitchen at the same time. We relax together by watching the Food Channel.

What is the kitchen like at Hilton Orlando? That is where the magic happens! 80% of the food we serve comes from farms and ranches within 100 miles of Orlando.

Why do so many celebrations happen revolving around food? It’s all about chemistry. A beautiful atmosphere, excellent service, quality ingredients and a kitchen full of creative people who care about the food. It all comes together on the plate for our guests. Now that’s how you make beautiful memories.

The Venetian Room at the Caribe Royale OrlandoThe Vision of Chef Khalid BenghallemBy Jennifer Marcus

> Having just celebrated its 10th anniversary this past Oc-

tober, The Venetian Room at the Caribe Royale All-Suite and

Convention Center has become one of the most divine res-

taurants in the Greater Orlando area. Famous for its heavenly

lobster bisque canopied with puff pastry, The Venetian Room

trumps the competition in a saturated restaurant market, with

attention to detail, elite quality of food, and because of Chef

Khalid Benghallem’s vision and talent.

Benghallem was part of the opening team more than a decade

ago and has overseen and crafted a thriving eatery ever since.

Leading up to this dream job, Benghallem’s fascination with

food as a young boy in Morocco came from his father who was

a hotel general manager.

“He would take me into the kitchen to learn from the staff and

I worked very closely with an older chef who worked there,”

said Benghallem.

Culinary school was an obvious choice and he attended the

Ecole Hôtelière de Rabat in his home country of Morocco. Af-

ter he traveled throughout France and Spain, Benghallem was

recruited by Disney’s Epcot to work at the legendary park in

Orlando, FL. Along with being on the opening teams of both

Emeril’s Orlando and Shula’s Steak House, Benghallem became

the sous chef at Epcot’s restaurant, Marrakesh, tucked in the

“country” section of Morocco giving tourists an authentic ex-

perience and taste from that land.

Prior to coming to the Caribe Royale and The Venetian Room,

chef Khalid Benghallem was recognized two years in a row as

Page 37: Tampa Style February 2013 Issue

CHEF PROFILE :: 37

one of the Top 20 Chefs in Central Florida

(Restaurant Forum Magazine) at Gulliver’s

Grill in the Walt Disney World Swan Resort.

Now, as the chef de cuisine at The Venetian

Room, he currently attends to an intimate

92-seat restaurant and feels as though he

can be more creative and personal with his

guests.

Dining at The Venetian Room is an experi-

ence. Waiters are donned in tuxedos and

meals are delivered to your table and pre-

sented with the uncovering of elegant silver

domes. The menu offers everything from a

lump crab cake with Pommery creamy mus-

tard sauce and topped with a black sesame

Savoy cabbage slaw, to the buffalo short ribs,

which is slow braised with five Moroccan

and Asian spices, onion jam, a truffle parsnip

puree and natural jus delivering a unique Eu-

ropean and Asian blend. And, of course, the

lobster bisque.

“The lobster bisque is hands down one of

the best and the crab cake is better than

you can find in the Bahamas,” says Benghal-

lem.

Contributing to the success of the menu is

the quality of ingredients. Fish and tuna are

flown in straight from Hawaii, fresh mush-

rooms from the mushroom capital of the

world, Michigan, balsamic vinegars from Italy

and specialties from Scotland.

“We don’t mind spending the extra money

to get the best from the vendors, because

we want the best for our customers,” notes

Benghallem.

This elite quality of service and food has

earned The Venetian Room the AAA Four-

Diamond Award eight years in a row along

with a lengthy list of accolades including Or-

lando’s Most Romantic Restaurant, Orlan-

do’s Best Wine List, Orlando’s Best Overall

Restaurant, and the Golden Spoon Award

for the past three years.

Specials are offered every night allowing

Benghallem to create an artistic entrée

using whatever ingredients are in season.

These specials, along with using new tech-

niques and keeping up with the trends of

cuisine, are what keep locals coming back

time and time again.

The Venetian Room is perfect for celebrat-

ing birthdays, anniversaries or just to enjoy

a special evening with a loved one. Benghal-

lem knows a thing or two about that hav-

ing a family of his own at home. While he

dazzles, creates, and delivers every night, he

treasures his mornings when he can drive

his five and seven year old kids to school.

Benghallem’s extraordinary talent paired

with the ambiance and design of The Ve-

netian Room really make for a lovely duet.

Benghallem will continue to be the top rat-

ed chef in the top rated restaurant for years

to come if he continues to develop the res-

taurant the same way he has since 2002.

> Have you met Tommy? Nearly 15 years ago Tommy Weclew moved to Central Flor-ida and soon began buying houses with his Family, rehabbing, placing a qualified tenant and selling the property to retirees look-ing to diversify their portfolio income. The business, The Realty Medics, grew mostly by word of mouth and has led to nearly 1000 happy buyers and listings sold. “We decided to not become a huge brokerage with a bunch of agents and instead focus on our clients.” says Tommy.

In 2008, Tommy and The Realty Medics added a property management division. “Our investors were looking for a property management company they could trust and keep their cash flow as the number one priority.” The Realty Medics also added a Fannie Mae approved property rehab and repair company. The Realty Medics are able to offer their investors very affordable ini-tial rehab costs with the added security of a one year warranty on all repairs. Tommy and his team are now approaching $50,000,000 under management and continue to grow each month. “We can react significantly fast-er than the big funds. They may have more money to invest but our investors are able to start reaping the benefits significantly faster. In less than 30 days after purchasing a property we typically are able to rehab, secure a qualified tenant and start earning income for the investors.”

The Realty Medics utilize the top property management software (Appfolio). This soft-ware combined with The Realty Medics’ state of the art website provides The Realty Medics with a 96% on time rental income

collection. Tenants can simply pay their rent on the website. Tenants can also purchase a number of products from the website such as several different cable providers, cell phone providers, home phone and even home security systems.

Tommy and The Realty Medics recently started a “Teacher’s Wish List” where teach-ers that are having a difficult time affording to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pocket can simply “make a wish” for those supplies. Teachers simply visit www.TheRealtyMedics.com and click the “Teach-ers Wish List” button. “We are committed to purchasing the supplies to fill as many ‘Teacher wishes’ we can afford.” the current program is limited to schools within East Orlando but The Realty Medics have plans to extend to more schools.

In addition to Real Estate Tommy is dedicat-ed to a few other passions such as the game of golf and supports the U.S.G.A. He is cur-rently training and will attempt to qualify for the 2013 U.S Open golf championship. Tommy has also partnered with Grammy nominated and 3 time Dove Award winning music producer Justin Boller to offer high quality music production to the industries top artists. You can find Tommy and The Realty Medics at their brand new office located in down-town Avalon Park right next door to Yoga East.

> The life of a cocktail has gone through many transformations throughout the years. One can argue where they originated and how they came about but there is no doubt as to what we are doing with them now. The ability to find a new way to develop cocktails is thanks to the knowledge and the ability of the bartenders who choose to develop and hone their craft. Without these knowledgeable professionals “playing” with drink recipes and how they are presented one wonders if we would ever come up with what we are starting to see trending now.

The time of the barrel aged cocktail is here and I, for one, am happy to see it. While this idea has been around in some areas in small amounts it is starting to get noticed here. As in most building of cocktails this idea is also formed in parts. One part playfulness, two parts ingenuity, add a dash of depravity and voila the barrel-aged cocktail is ready for 2013. A big force behind this is the willingness of the spirit companies to support the abilities of these creative bartending minds. With the growing numbers of small batch distillers out there listening to what mixologists want to create, this trend will be popping up soon in your local drinking establishment. While you will not see it everywhere, thank goodness, you know if your local barkeep is one of those creative souls always tinkering with the shiny new toys in the industry.

The vessel that will deliver this growing trend to our favorite drinking guinea pigs is a result of phenomenal support from those cutting edge distillers who see and believe in what professional bartenders can create. The new toy that makes all this possible is a small wooden barrel that will fit behind the bar. In most cases you are looking at a small wooden barrel that will hold one to two gallons at most. The best part is it is small enough for you to invent and play without costing a fortune. It also allows the pre-mixed cocktail to be done in small batches so you can hone it to your taste and needs. My hat is off to these distillers, which range from small batch vodka makers to whiskey distillers, who have helped create these lovely little aging barrels. The time in the barrel will change depending on the mystical brew created and will be tweaked to the discretion of the mind behind it. There are even those distillers out there making a higher proof version of their product to allow longer aging in these barrels. It all adds up to a new concept for all who dare to give it a shot.

The want to create new ways to experience flavors and styles through cocktails is not

new but this is. Bartenders have been building many styles of cocktails for their friends and patrons for years now. The barrel aged cocktail will allow them to create and age something new right in the comfort of their bar. This process will allow them to build flavors however their wicked mind chooses and then age them in-house until they are ready. The plus is rather than making a single cocktail for a customer it will allow them the ability of making large batch cocktail recipes that will last longer than just making a punch or shrub (not what Monty Python was talking about) for the evening. With all the tools and flavors that have become available in recent years the combinations are endless. I for one look forward to see what my like-minded friends come up with. So when you see a small aging barrel when you walk into your local bar or restaurant, please ask your bartender what they have in there. I assure you they will appreciate the chance to share their creation and open your eyes to a new concept in the ageless, well maybe now better coined phrase, timeless cocktail. <

As the daughter of a family prac-tioner and a cardiologist, she knew the hard work and sacrifices she would make as a successful physician, wife, and mother. Her parents told her that there is no other job that will give her the satisfaction of medi-cine. Physicians relieve suffering and can im-prove an individual’s health.

After graduating suma cum laude from Tufts Unversity, Leena went back home to Ohio for medical school. She started her medi-cal training at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and completed her fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Al-bert Einstein University in New York City. At Einstein, she participated in research on angioedema, presented complex cases at the Allergy and Immunology national meet-ings, and spent the early years of her career taking care of pediatric patients with HIV and refractory asthma. Her pediatric pa-tients have always held a special place in her heart. Dr. Anderson sees both adults and children. “I want to help my patients feel better. It is a gift and privilege to be able to help patients of all ages.”

As most Floridians know, warm climate fosters perpetual sniffles and sneezes from continual allergen exposures. Dr. Anderson prides herself on keeping up with treatment breakthroughs to help her patients in this “hostile” allergy environment. Along with extensive schooling, her uncommon abil-

ity to explain medical diagnoses in layman’s terms enhances each patient’s understand-ing of their ailment and, in turn, improves treatment success. As a lifelong allergy suf-ferer, she is sensitive to her patient’s needs.

After her husband finished his cardiology training in Vermont, they relocated to Flori-da. Once she joined Drs Jacinto and Rosen-berg at Allergy and Asthma Associates of Central Florida, she discovered, to her sur-prise, her “snowbird” patients had followed her. One couple drives two hours each way! It is certainly for her communication skills and for her sharp diagnostic skills--could it also be for her fashion and style?

In truth, if Dr. Anderson had not chosen medicine, she may have followed a career in fashion. Cultivated by her childhood love for art and her time in Manhattan, she has developed a knack for style. She is gifted with her ability to style both herself and her friends. She loves the hunt for good clothes at good prices. Fortunately for her patients, it has become a hobby and not her career.

Leena loves to spend time with her son, the family dog and her husband, Dr. Phillip Anderson. She loves modern art, traveling, a good deal, and cooking. She keeps herself fit, playing field hockey and exercising daily. Leena wakes up passionate about starting each day as a mother, a wife and an allergy immunology doctor. <

Hall-Bradley fell in love with all things den-

im. She also learned the importance of giv-

ing back.

Combining her passion of fashion and phi-

lanthropy, Dana created the Diamond and

Denim Ball in 2012. This followed in the

footsteps of her past charity event titled

The Vino Ball, which spanned five years of

raising money for Ronald McDonald House

Charities of Central Florida.

After losing her niece, Tara, in 2010, Dana

became even more impassioned about help-

ing this fine organization, which helps sick

children and their families during their most

This year, the Diamond and Denim Ball will

be held on March 2, 2013 from 6 – 10 p.m.

in the elegant showroom at Infiniti, which

is located at 4237 Millenia Blvd. in Orlando.

It’s a Vegas themed event, complete with ca-

sino gaming. Also featured are beautiful cars

and an upscale fashion show. Come dressed

to impress, in your finest denim designs or

chic Vegas attire, and enjoy cocktails & hors

Dr. Keshini ParbhuOphthalmologist

> Keshini Parbhu helped form Orlando Eye Institute in 2010 when she saw there was a void of certified oculoplastic sur-geons in Orlando. In those two years, she has formed an indelible impression with referring physicians and patients. She has done this with a blend of artistry, creativity, and surgical prowess, which has reflected in her postoperative outcomes. “Quality of life is very important to my patients. I want them to feel comfortable with the func-tionality of their outcomes, as well as their cosmetic appearance.”

Oculoplastic surgery is a relatively new field that blends elements of ophthalmology, the medical field specializing in the eye, and gen-eral plastic surgery. This makes Dr. Parbhu an ideal person to perform surgery on the eyelids and in the orbit, since she is familiar with the nuances of each field. After finish-ing college at Duke University, she moved to Nashville, TN, where she obtained her medical doctorate at Vanderbilt University. She stayed on at Vanderbilt to do an intern-ship in general surgery before completing a residency in ophthalmology at Vanderbilt Eye Institute.

Although she liked ophthalmology, Dr. Parbhu missed some of the aspects of her general surgery internship and decided to do a two-year ASOPRS fellowship in oculo-plastic surgery at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The American Society of Oph-thalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) is a prestigious group of select ophthalmologists who have undergone ex-tra training and are committed to advanc-

ing education, research, and the quality of clinical practice in the fields of aesthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery special-izing in the face, orbits, eyelids, and lacrimal system. After completing the fellowship, she underwent a rigorous certification process and is now certified by ASOPRS. She is also board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Parbhu is well-versed in a variety of lid procedures including blepharoplasty and ptosis repair, for both adults and children. She also offers treatment for tearing and orbital conditions such as thyroid eye dis-ease and is proficient in treating trauma, such as lid lacerations or orbital fractures.

Besides functional surgeries, she also offers a variety of cosmetic services including La-tisse, cosmetic blepharoplasty, eyeliner tat-too, BOTOX®, and dermal fillers. “I think being a woman has given me a unique per-spective on aesthetics and I try to bring that to my patients. It is important that they have a youthful appearance and yet look natural.”

In her spare time, she loves to exercise and do yoga, bake treats for friends and family, and spend time with her husband and son. She also believes in teaching others and is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University Of Central Florida School of Medicine as well as a frequent contributor at the annual Academy of Ophthalmology meeting. <

64 :: DON‘T MISS THE BEAT

> What do you get when you combine adrenaline, high energy and talented musicians who like their rock music hard and LOUD? None other than the New York based heavy rock band, Eve To Adam. ETA--who recently completed two US tours with Creed--is made up of Taki Sassaris (lead vocals/guitar), Alex Sassaris (drums/backing vocals), Gaurav Bali (guitar/backing vocals) and Luis Espaillat (bass). 2012 was quite the exciting year for ETA with touring in sup-port of their 2011 album, “Banquet for a Starving Dog,” and working hard in the studio to produce another hit record. Style Magazines got to catch up with the busy band during their last day touring with fellow rock bands, Halestorm and In This Moment at this year’s Jagermeister Presents Tour. Check out what ETA had to say about their band, the tour, new music and what 2013 might have in store! Riesa: Let’s start with that unique band name! Where did “Eve to Adam” come from? ETA’s Taki Sassaris: The name came from a po-etry book that my mother had given me back when I had first started this group and I had decided to go

on this endeavor. It comes from John Milton’s Para-dise Lost. At the time I found it interesting cause I thought it was the kind of name that would allow us to grow. Overtime it’s become this sort of rep-resentation for the spectrum of humanity and the spectrum of temptation that rock and roll presents. Riesa: You guys are on the Jagermeister tour right now! How has that been? ETA’s Luis Espaillat: It’s been going great! This is our last day of the tour. We’ve been out for close to 6 weeks with Halestorm and In This Moment who have been phenomenal. It’s been a great metal rock show and it’s been fabulous. We’ve had a great time and are glad to be here. Riesa: How is this tour different from the Creed tour that ETA just went on? ETA’s Luis Espaillat: It’s a different demograph-ic, a different style. We’re seeing with Halestorm and In This Moment another fan base--actually, a broader fan base would probably be more accurate--because

we do see younger fans as a whole, but we do see people bring their parents and their kids respectively. ETA’s Taki Sassaris: The cool thing too about the Creed tour was that even though the audience was seated for most of our set, the challenge was to really get them up out of their seats and we were successful in that. The great part was that through that entire 45 minute set, by the end of it, we had standing ovations. Riesa: Very awesome! Okay, let’s switch gears and talk about some of these awe-some collaborations ETA have been work-ing on. ETA’s Gaurav Bali: Well the first one is Eric Bass, the bass player from Shinedown. He’s actually based in Charleston, South Carolina. We flew down there and collabo-rated on a song called “Straight Jacket Su-perModel” which we are playing in the set--we are really excited about it. We’ve just got a lot of new stuff. The theme of this upcom-ing year is expanding our horizons, writing

with new people, a new producer--actually a couple of producers--and a couple of band members so we’re excited about all the new collaborations. Riesa: I think all of your fans are excited too! Well to wrap up, how about everyone share their dream band tour and goal for 2013? ETA’s Alex Sassaris: Opening up for Aerosmith is my dream tour. That was my first concert! Goals for 2013 is to really ex-pand our fan base and headline. ETA’s Gaurav Bali: My dream tour is Van Halen. I’d say goals for 2013 are prob-ably the same for all of us. Just to keep push-ing forward...keep touring. We’re gonna re-lease a new record in March or April...just being on the road and hopefully, by some-time next year, have built up our fan base enough to be doing our own shows. ETA’s Taki Sassaris: It’s been a dream of mine since I was 13 years old to have a chance to play with Alice In Chains and

Soundgarden. And then also, to be a head-liner just for our fan base to get a chance to hear an hour and a half of just Eve To Adam would be a dream too. ETA’s Luis Espaillat: I’d probably say, opening for Foo Fighters--one of my favor-ites! They bring the same kind of energy we try to bring every night to our shows. For 2013, just to have a good time, all the time. Just keep on rocking and rolling and making better records. That’s what we’re trying to do. Whether they were answering my ques-tions, teasing each other or making me cry with laughter--it was impossible to not see ETA’s camaraderie and the genuine passion they all share for music. That’s why it comes as no surprise to hear about their much-deserved success and the even brighter future ahead of them. To be a part of see-ing that promising future unfold, be sure to check out www.EveToAdam.com for all the latest on the band, their music and upcom-ing tours.<

> Over the past few years there has been a significant amount of media atten-tion regarding the State of Florida and pre-scription drug abuse. Most of the attention seems to be focused on pain medications such as oxycodone. Florida has been called the “epicenter” of the problem and Inter-state 75 has been labeled the “oxy express”. In 2011 it was reported that doctors in Florida prescribed 10 times more oxycodo-ne pills than every other state in the coun-try combined. However, changes in the law and prescription databases are approaches which law enforcement has used as tools to “fix the problem.”

It goes without saying that avoiding over-doses, illegal drug abuse, and any related crime is obviously very important to all of us. At NeJame Law, our attorneys have represented many doctors and been able to see first hand doctors who have rightfully and wrongfully been the target of govern-mental investigations. The investigations have included accusations that doctors were conspiring with patients to traffic in pain pills, trafficking in pain pills themselves, and even money laundering.

With the potential for a criminal accusation looming over a doctor’s head -treating a patient with any controlled pain medication can make the practice of medicine a little scary. These accusations have a potential criminal penalty such as a 25-year minimum

mandatory sentence for a total pill weight of 28 grams (1 oz.) or more. To put this into perspective, this is the same penalty for hav-ing ‘one ounce’ of heroin! Even if entirely innocent, these accusations irreparably af-fect a doctor’s reputation, the doctor’s li-cense, and even affect his or her personal life. They ultimately affect the doctor’s en-tire practice, including, the other patients in need of medical treatment.

Which brings us to an interesting dilemma: Where is the balance between a doctor’s obligations to his or her patient AND addic-tion/the associated side effects of prescrip-tion pain medications?

Just like a client comes to an attorney re-garding a legal matter; a patient comes to a doctor looking for help and guidance re-garding one’s health. An attorney may refer to the Oath of Attorney to resolve an ethi-cal dilemma. A doctor may turn to the Hip-pocratic Oath for guidance. Depending on

the translation and version; there is a por-tion of the Hippocratic Oath which states that a doctor will “prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and judgment and never do harm to anyone.”

The Hippocratic Oath does not appear to give clear guidance. Like all humans, not all doctors agree. On one side, a doctor should not treat a patient with chronic pain using the most effective prescription pain medication because it may cause harm: ad-diction and side effects. On the other hand, a doctor should treat a patient with chronic pain using the most effective prescription pain medication because the regiment is “good” for the patient and outweighs any harm: potential addiction or side effects.

Some have been very caring and concerned. Although the risks of addiction are there, seeing a patient in chronic debilitating pain is not acceptable. The painful truth seems to be that because there is no clear solu-tion both patients and doctors alike must be extremely cautious before taking or prescribing pain medications. Addiction or incarceration are just two possible alterna-tives without exercising caution.<

70 :: BEST FRIENDS

> February is the best time to take your best friend for a walk, a hike, or a full-out camping safari in Florida! But before you lace up your boots for a hike with your pet across the Hal Scott Preserve, remember some basic safety rules. • Carry enough water for you and your pet. Collapsible bowls and cups make drinking easy for your pet and easy for you to trans-port.

• Take a first-aid kit.

• Bring some food/treats for you and your pet – in case you get lost.

• Let someone know where you are going.

• Don’t let Rover drink from streams, lakes or puddles. Most streams carry Giardia lamblia, a microscopic organism that is the most frequent cause of non-bacterial diar-rhea in North America.

• Watch where you fish. Recent reports state that NO fish should be eaten from the Econlockhatchee River.

• Beware of wildlife. Raccoons, skunks, and opossums could carry rabies. Several snakes have venom, which could kill Rover within minutes. In addition, loony Labra-dors chasing wildlife causes stress to the whole ecosystem.• Noise is good. Sneaking up on wildlife could promote an unwarranted attack. Likewise, if you don’t hear “normal” forest sounds, a predator might be near. Bobcats are not big kitties, they are dangerous!

For someone who wants to take their dogs camping for the first time... • Use Frontline (Flea and Tick) and Heart-gard (heartworm) preventative.

• Don’t throw waste food anywhere near the campsite – your dog WILL find it.

• Sausage is great, but goes quickly through a canine.

• Freshly roasted marshmallows could burn the inside of your pooch’s mouth.

• Until they become used to the sounds, most dogs will bark at every noise while you try to sleep.

• Regardless of how you try, they will get dirty. Very dirty. Just enjoy the muck.

• Always use caution around the fire.

• Camping chairs break, so don’t let your pet sleep under them.

• Immediately designate the dog’s relief area, but not directly in path to your relief area.

• Oh yeah, and wear at least sandals while walking at night. Yuck. If you are a bit more urban, you might want to take your pets to the Paws In The Park, on February 9, 2013 at Lake Eola. With the Mardi Paws theme this year, you (and your pet) will have a great time with bones and beads! > The British Virgin Islands are comprised of approxi-mately 50 lush islands situated east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea. Known for their world-class sailing, friendly people, a high standard of living, political stability, natural beauty and the absence of taxes.

The pristine waters and cool breezes of the surrounding North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea create the ideal setting for some of the world’s best sailing. The Brit-ish Virgin Islands (BVI) has often been called “The Yachting Capital of the World,” providing protected cruising where boaters are always in sight of land and sheltered anchor-ages are around every bend. The crystal-clear turquoise waters also offer some of the world’s best diving and snor-keling. Additionally, the island’s powder-white sand beaches tempt sunbathers, and its lush green mountains offer ample hiking trails.

The third largest of the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is 10 miles long and two miles wide. It lies 12 miles east of Road Town, Tortola (capital of the British Virgin Islands) and approximately 30 miles northeast of St. Thomas, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lush landscape of Virgin Gorda is blan-keted with Sea Grape and Tamarind along the beaches, and stretches of Mangrove around the marina and Deep Bay. Tucked in a private bay on Virgin Gorda, lies Biras Creek Resort, a hidden oasis set upon a 140 acre nature reserve amidst white sand beaches and the sparkling waters of the North Sound, Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. A member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux hotel group, Biras Creek is a luxury boutique resort known for its island charm, exceptional hospitality, myriad of outdoors activi-ties, and the finest dining in the BVI.

Wild nutmeg, Frangipani, wild orchids and Diddle Doe Cactus dot the property, and can be enjoyed from the many walking paths and hiking trails that have been cleared

Throughout the year, one may view Crested Antillean Hummingbirds, Bananaquits, Zenaida Doves, Sora, Clapper Rails, Herons, Egrets, and numerous other colorful species. The water is crystal clear, making it easy to observe the geometric coral formations and colorful fish.

Accessible only by boat or helicopter, Biras Creek is comprised of 31 recently remod-eled, luxurious suites set along the Atlantic Ocean, most with stunning ocean views. Twenty-two Ocean Suites are positioned along the water’s edge and six Garden Suites are tucked back in the naturally landscaped gardens. Two larger Grand Suites and a two bedroom, two bathroom Premier Suite, all featuring private plunge pools, also sit along the water’s edge. All suites feature a sitting room and separate bedrooms with king-size beds, outdoor showers, 300 thread count cotton linens, plush pillow-top mat-tresses, feathered down pillows, tropical waffle-weave robes, iPod docking sound systems, furnished verandas, personal Caloi bicycles on which to explore the sprawling resort, and more. The Grand and Premier suites feature Sony LCD TVs, DVD players and Bose iPod Sound Docks. Most of the suites now feature WiFi as well.

The open air Biras Creek Hilltop Restau-rant is heralded as having some of the finest dining in all of the Caribbean, and features an extensive wine list and a daily changing menu of the freshest cuisine inspired by lo-cal flavors, open to both resort guests and those just passing by on boat. The restau-rant is also home to an outdoor bar serv-ing island specialties like “Mango Maniacs,” “Painkillers,” and “Kiwi Coladas,” includes a private dining room and unforgettable views of the North Sound. If guests would

like to enjoy the local cuisine off-site, the nearby and locally owned Fat Virgin Café is within walking distance, and is known for serving the best conch fritters in the BVI.

All the amenities of a luxury resort, as well as exciting outdoor activities are available to guests of Biras Creek Resort, including the use of Boston Whaler Dinghies, Hobie Cats, windsurfers, sea kayaks, and 26’ Folk sailing boats with instruction. Guests can also enjoy snorkeling equipment, instruc-tion and guided snorkeling trips, kayaking, introductory scuba instruction, guided na-ture walks, hiking, bicycling, beach volleyball, tennis, and swimming in the resort’s fresh-water swimming pool or the ocean. For an extra charge, the resort is happy to arrange scuba diving at one of two adjacent dive centers, deep sea fishing, motorboat char-ters, day or sunset sails aboard the resort’s 62 foot sailing yacht, sightseeing tours, he-licopter daytrips to neighboring islands and much more. Guests can shop in the resort’s gift shop, and Biras’ Spa by the Sea offers signature services and indulgences in the latest health and beauty treatments, avail-able at the spa, in-room, or from the seren-ity of the beach. A state-of-the-art fitness area with Life Fitness elliptical and treadmill machines beckons Biras Creeks’ more mo-tivated guests. The open-air Arawak Room, richly outfitted with Donghia and Janus et Cie furniture, features a large flat screen television and DVD player, WiFi and a book and DVD library, and is an inviting venue in which to relax and enjoy the afternoon sunset.

Standard daily rates include double occu-pancy accommodations, afternoon tea and three gourmet meals per day, and endless on-site activities, and range from $700 to $2,500 per night, depending on the sea-son. Additional guests and children ages 8 and older can be added for $190 per night.

Dr. Palceski – Ask The Expert:

Q. This new year, I’ve made a resolu-tion to take better care of my skin. Do you have any suggestions or favorite skin care products that you can rec-ommend?

A. Good skin care doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be as easy as 1, 2, 3 - 1) cleanse 2) hydrate and 3) protect. When getting started, keep it simple. You are more likely to stick with a new routine that is easy to follow. In regard to specific product lines, some of my personal favorites are VIVITÉ® and Glytone®. A Clarisonic® Exfoliating Brush is another must have.

Q. Despite all the rest and relaxation I just had on my vacation, I feel like I still look tired. Is there anything I can do to look more rested?

A. BOTOX® is by far the procedure I find to have the highest degree of

patient satisfaction in addressing this very issue. BOTOX® works directly to relax the muscles responsible for frowning and other unwanted furrows and creases around the eyes and forehead. Relaxing the muscles responsible for these expressions results in a more rested appearance. This procedure combined with a good night’s sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise will get you on your way to looking rested and rejuvenated.

Q. I just turned 40 and am starting to notice a lot of sun damage and age spots on my face and chest that I didn’t used to have. Is there anything I can do to get rid of these spots and to even out my skin tone?

A. Most cases of discoloration, age spots and freckles that appear on the face, chest, and shoulders are the result of repeated exposure to the sun’s intense and harmful rays. People in

sunnier climates, like Florida, are much more prone to sun spots and loss of elasticity in these areas. To eliminate these spots, I typically recommend a series of 2-3 Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatments. In addition to spots, many people also complain that their skin looks leathery and/or wrinkly. In this case, I strongly recommend fractionated laser treatments to refine skin texture and improve the overall appearance of the skin. When IPL and fractional laser treatments are used in combination, the results are quite remarkable and can literally turn back the clock on the look and feel of your skin. As always, daily use of sunscreen is imperative for maintaining results and preventing future damage.

> Did The Beatles have it right when they said, “all you need is love”? Is it possible that being in love could increase your health while decreasing stress? The answer to all of theses questions is yes! The Huffington Post reported that a study out of the State University of New York have proven that relationships, both good and bad, can increase the longevity of your life. Scholars at the University found that social situations, such as love, have positively constructed blood pressure and cardiovascular health in their subjects. So now we ask, “what’s love got to do with it?”

Participants in the State University of New York study experienced lower levels of blood pressure thus allowing the brain, kidneys, and heart to function effectively. When the participants were in the presence of their partner, professor of psychology Brooks Gump said blood pressure lowered, and “The lowering was not a big difference, but it’s significant.” Now that’s a whole new meaning to the term “love medicine.”

Another significant study out of the National Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C. discovered that in countries such as the United States, Scandinavia, and Japan, premature death or illness was a direct connection to those who isolate themselves from others. It’s safe to say that human contact relieves physiological concerns, subtracting stress from the equation and adding love’s natural benefits. Associate professor of psychology Julianne Holt-Lunstad claims that emotional support and honest advice can “help us cope with stress…[and] buffer the negative effects.” It has also been discovered that those who are in happy marriages tend to

attend regular doctor visits and are encouraged by their spouses to engage in preventative treatments. Arthur Aron attributes this to the fact that “when you’ve just fallen in love and the person goes out of your sight for five minutes, you think, ‘Are they dead? Did they find someone else?’” Couples overall concern for each other promotes awareness for health related issues, urging them to keep informed. Match.com correspondent and physician Redford Williams, M.D. says “people adopt safer behaviors when they’re coupled up… For example, you’re less likely to risk your life with smoking, binge drinking, or dangerous eating habits if a loved one is depending on you.”

It’s not only the physical and emotional presence of your significant other that has staying power, its also chemical. The hormone oxytocin is said to improve mood, stress, and blood pressure that is released when you hug or hold hands with that special someone. Those who are married are also less likely to suffer from diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease than those who are single. Stress weakens the immune system so lower stress levels keep you healthier, longer.

Author of Younger Next Year, Dr. Harry Lodge explains that love “brings the right chemicals, the right nutrients” allowing your body to “heal in all the different areas that otherwise are chewed up with stress.” Cupid better sharpen his arrows and strengthening his biceps, people are going to be scrambling to get “that loving feeling” this Valentines Day. <
