The Churth that St Francis Xavier built, with the patrongage of Travancore Maharaja, istoday called Xavier's Church.

Even before the arrival of St Francis Xavier, certain sections of fishermen community in theCoastal Village of Tutocirin, Tirunveli and KK Dists changed their religion from Hinduismto Catholicism in exchange for the protection given by Portungues rulers of Cochin, fromthe attack of Muslims.

The portuugese Stood as god fathers in the marriages of the fishermen, giving them theportugues surnames like Fernando, So, the history of the fishermen and their conversion to

catholicism predated the advent of St Francis Xavier, However, it is to that Saint goes thecredit of making these fishermen wholeheartedly accept Jesus Under St Francis Xavier, theconversion was from heart, not at all by any inducements. He did not give anyting to the

fishermen, in turn.
