In this quarter we focused our core activities in 32 districts of Tamil Nadu. Our district coordinators emphasized on- Identi�ed Referrals, Awareness Training, Kitchen Garden, Gram Sabha participation, Medical Camps, Caritas – Udhyam ECO DRR Project, Farmer Training and Livelihood Project among other activities.

AWARENESS TRAINING

KITCHEN GARDEN IN ICDS CENTRE& SCHOOLS

We conducted the Maternal Child Health Training program given to ANC Mothers, ICDS Teachers, College Students, School Children, Nehru Yuva Kendra and general people. The topics covered were Govt. Schemes – 108, 104; CM Insurance Schemes; Food & Nutrition and Kitchen Garden. Around 8303 people from 28 districts attended the total 271 training programs.

We started Kitchen Garden & Herbal Garden in the ICDS Centres, Schools with support of ICDS Teachers, School Children & volunteers. Around 338 people attended the program in 114 places in Tamil Nadu.

GRAM SABHA PARTICIPATIONIn order to decide how to use the available resources optimally in ways desired by the people and to bene�t the poorest in the village through direct democratic and participatory planning, the State government decided to conduct the Gram Shaba in all the panchayats on 1st May 2018 in Tamil Nadu. EKAM participated in the Gram Sabha through the District Coordinators in their home town. We participated in places across Tamil Nadu and covered areas like Administration & Budget, Basic Facilities, Health Awareness, Village Panchayat plan, NRGES Work (100 Days), Infrastructure issues, Natural Resource Management.

REFERRALS FOLLOW UP MEDICAL CAMP • A Referral follow up medical camp was conducted for cardiac children in Ariyalur Government Hospital, in which 30 children were screened in total. 5 children were identi�ed for surgery. Screening was done by Dr. Ganesh, Paediatric Cardiologist in Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital, Perambulur. The Chief Guest was Ariyalur Medical O�cer, Dr Ramesh and DTTMO Dr. Anathakumar. The camp was facilitated by EKAM Foundation.

• Another Referral follow up medical camp for cardiac children was conducted on 5th May 18 in Government Hospital, Perambalur. 31 children were screened in total out of this 3 children were advised for surgery. Screening was done by Dr. Ganesh, Paediatric Cardiologists – Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College & Hospital, Perambalur.

• A medical camp for Retinopathy of Prematurity test was also organized for new born babies in SNCUs. This camp was supported by Radhatri Nethralaya, Chennai. The aim of this camp was to focus on early intervention in new born babies for eye defect problem. We screened 89 new born babies and identi�ed 10 babies for surgery. Later, the laser surgery was supported by Radhatri Nethralaya in Chennai.

CARITAS-UDHAYAM ECO DRR PROJECTThis project works to reduce infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in 7 �ood a�ected districts of Tamilnadu namely Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Selam, Dharmapuri and Vellore. We conducted Capacity building and training program for VHWSNC’s and conducted the MCH Training program for SSS o�ce workers & SHG Members. We covered the topics like Govt. Schemes – 108, 104; CM Insurance Schemes; Food & Nutrition; Kitchen Garden.

FARMER TRAININGThis project intended to change the Natural farming methods for the farmers in Tamil Nadu. In this quarter we conducted 15 such training camps for farmers and discussed the topics of Natural Farming, Shivyog, Bore well system, Saving Water. Training was given by Mr.Kannan, Farming Consultant.

LIVELIHOOD PROJECTCommunity members who take care of their community's healthcare were incentivised through livelihood choices in this quarter. Connecting organic farmers and the community became the baseline for livelihood development. Supply of Safe and nutritive food to the community through micro enterprises from block level to district level is the action plan. So far we have identi�ed 140 farmers in 20 districts of Tamil Nadu. Once we reach a considerable size of farmers, we will organise meetings and form speci�c strategies for each district to make the safe and nutritive food reach the local community. It’s a preventive health care model.

LIVELIHOOD PROJECT

MENTOR NURSES TRAINING PROJECT– FUNDED BY RGMFE (RG MANUDHANE FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE)

The state of Tamilnadu has good health care indices but its Neonatal, Infant and Maternal Mortality Rates have remained stagnant over the past ten years. One of the key issues identi�ed with regards to this problem is that health care facilities within government settings in Tamil Nadu face an acute shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, particularly well trained nurses.

In 2012, a Government Order to designate Mentor Nurse at the state level and district for training 4000 nurses was passed by the Government of TN. This set a platform to provide a mandate for signi�-cant intervention in healthcare, particularly maternal and infant care at the village level. Selected from the districts, the mentor nurses were identi�ed to train; work with the nurses in PHCs across TN as an interface between the District and the Block Level Hospital authorities, thereby leading to improved nursing delivery.

The project, funded by RGMFE (RG Manudhane Foundation for Excellence) which is run under the auspices of Directorate of Public Health, Tamil Nadu aims to build the capacity, empower and 184 mentor nurses from the Government health centers and enable them to take the knowledge and skills forward to the existing framework of nurses stationed within all the Government Hospitals in the state.

CARE OF PREGNANT MOTHERS, NEWBORN & CHILDRENThis project was Funded by Rotary club of Madras East, Facilitated by Ekam Foundation

• The scheduled training program was held on 26-04-2018 at Lalithapuram, ICDS centre under the name of Maternal Child Health Awareness Training – IV for Mothers & children of Kamarajar colony slum in which around 40 Mothers & their children got bene�ted.

• The next training program was held on 28th April 2018 at SM Nagar, ICDS centre under the name of Maternal Child Health Awareness Training – IV for Mothers & children of South Boag road slum in which around 35 Mothers & their children their children got bene�ted.

SUCCESS STORIES FOR THIS QUARTERBABY OF PARAMESHWARIPeriaswamy from Villupuram district works as a casual labour for a meagre monthly salary. His wife Parameshwari had an institutional delivery of a female at JIPMER. On day 2 of life the child was diagnosed with Dextrocardia / DORV / VSD/ Pulmonary Atresia with non con�uent PA.

Immediately the child was shifted to MIOT, where Dr. Robert Coelho – Chief Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon planned high risk palliative shunt surgery. Since Periaswamy was the only earning member his income was not su�cient to a�ord for the child’s treatment. Knowing their poor situation Ekam came forward to save the child’s life by contributing sum of Rs. 50,000/- as a partial payment.

On 24/5/2018 the child was discharged from the hospital and is now living a normal life.

EKAM DONATION TO SALEM MOHAN KUMARAMANGALAM MEDICAL COLLEGEEKAM received a request letter from Dr. Kumarvel, Nodal o�cer from Salem Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Hospital, Salem, on 27th March 18 for a Washing Machine. The hospital sta� is �nding it di�cult to manage the laundry for babies and mothers, because sometimes it takes more than 2 to 3 days in the washing line. Also it becomes very di�cult to maintain strict sterilization in SNCU. In response to this request, Ekam donated a fully automatic Whirlpool washing machine to the hospital on 17th April 2018.

BABY OF CHITHRA

Baby of Chithra (female child) was diagnosed with Extreme Preterm 28 Weeks/ Very Low Birth Weight / Probable Sepsis/ Apnea of Prematurity/ Left Lung Collapse/Anaemia of Prematurity / PDA/ Perinatal Depression for which initially she was treated at Chengalpet Medical College.

The baby had multiple complexions, so she was shifted to Sri Ramachandra Hospital on 14/5/2018. Dr. Sathya-Department of Pediatrics, Chengalpattu Medical College referred the child to Ekam foundation to undertake the entire treatment cost, since the father of the baby works as a house keeper. She was kept under ventilator and the overall treatment cost came up to Rs. 75,424/-.On 20/6/2018, Baby of Chithra was discharged from the hospital and now the child is recovering to a normal and healthy life.
