Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, Nagapattinam entered
into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the
School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences of
College of Agriculture, Auburn University, USA on
07.10.2013. The MoU was signed by Dr.William Daniels
of Auburn University and Dr.M.Venkatasamy, Director
in-charge of Research and Extension of TNFU in the
presence of Dr.Baskaran Manimaran, Vice-Chancellor,
TNFU, Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean in-charge, FC&RI at Fisheries
College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi.
This MoU will pave way for collaboration of both the
Universities in the area of research, student exchange
programmes, staff exchange, offering of dual degree
programme, etc. Dr.William Daniels after visiting all the
departments and Maritech Research Centre,
Tharuvaikulam, expressed his opinion that there are a lot of
opportunities for collaboration between FC&RI, TNFU and
Auburn University especially in areas like Mariculture,
freshwater aquaculture, seaweed farming, lobster fattening,
seafood safety, etc.
Dr.Daniels also interacted with the faculty staff and
students of the FC&RI with the presence of the Vice-
Chancellor and spoke on the procedures followed for
admission of students for undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes of their institute in Auburn University and the
scope for exchange programmes.

One year Certificate Course on “Fishing gear and Fish
Catching methods” was inaugurated on 04.10.2013 at
Institute of Fisheries Technology, Ponneri. Seven
students including one lady candidate from
Pazhaverkadu, Ponneri and Mayiladuthirai have
registered for the programme. The course comprises
theory and practical sessions in fishing and fish
processing methodologies with two semesters.

Certificate course on ornamental fish culture technology
The valedictory function of 2nd batch for the
Certificate Course on “Ornamental Fish Culture
Technology” was conducted on 10.10.2013, at
Institute of Fisheries Technology, Ponneri. Mr. Thillai
Rajan, Assistant Director, State Fisheries Department,
Ponneri was present for the Valedictory function. A
total of 26 trainees were issued certificates by
Mr.Thillai Rajan and Dr.D.Manikandavelu, Director
in-charge, Institute of Fisheries Technology, Ponneri.
Dr.A.G.Gopalakannan, and Mrs.S.Aruna, Assistant
Professors made necessary arrangements for the
function.
The Institute of Fisheries Technology,
Nagapattinam currently offers a one year
certificate course on “Aquaculture” with a view
to produce technical manpower and providing
self employment in the field of coastal finfish and
shellfish farming, freshwater fish culture and
ornamental fish farming. The certificate course
comprises of two semesters and the students will
be exposed to theory classes, field visits and
project works. Courses like marine finfish and
shellfish farming are being offered in the first
semester and freshwater fish culture and
ornamental fish farming courses will be offered
during the second semester.
A total of 9 students have registered for the
certificate course and currently undergoing the first
semester

practices in the coastal areas of the trainees.
Dr. S.Athithan, Professor and Head conducted and
coordinated the whole day training programme.
One day on-campus training programme on Farm
based Aqua feed Preparation was conducted in the
Department of Coastal Aquaculture on 22.10.2013. A
total of 11 trainees including 5 women from
Thoothukudi district participated. This training
programme mainly aims to impart knowledge and
create awareness on farm based aqua feed preparation
among trainees. The various aspects of fish feed
preparation such as importance of feeds in
aquaculture, types of feeds, feed formulation methods,
feed preparation methods, selection of fish feed
ingredients, grinding and mixing of ingredients,
drying, packing, quality control of fish feeds and
economic aspects were taught to the SHG leaders and
unemployed fisherfolk. Video show on fish feeds
preparation was shown to the trainees. Trainees were
exposed practically by taking different ingredients for
making feeds. This training programme will pave the
way for self employment by starting their farming

TNFU participated in Anna University Exhibition
TNFU participated in the TECHUCEN’13 exhibition
organized by the University College of Engineering
(Anna University, Tirunelveli Region) in association
with Kanyakumari District Administration from
07.10.2013 to 08.10.2013 at Nagercoil to promote
Kanya Industries. Exhibits on boat models, collapsible
traps, value added fishery products, aquaponics,
freshwater ornamental fishes, etc, were displayed.
Dr. G. Sugumar, Dean in-charge, FC&RI gave a talk
on Applications of Engineering in Fisheries with
emphasis on Fish Processing in order to sensitize the
students on fisheries engineering technologies.
Dr. N. Neethiselvan, Professor and Head, Dept. of
Fishing Technology and Fisheries Engineering
presented a lecture on Fishing Technology and the
expectations of fishermen from the engineering
graduates. Dr. David Kingston, Professor & Head,
FTRC, Parakkai and his team displayed aquapoincs
integrated with horticulture and fisheries, fish waste
utilization for production methane gas, freshwater
ornamental fishes, etc.

Professors of FC&RI made arrangements for the
exhibition.

The first year classes for BFSc degree programme for
the academic year 2013-14 commenced on
03.09.2013 at Fisheries College and Research
Institute, Thoothukudi. A programme was organized
to welcome 35 fresh students (19 boys and 16 girls)
and Dr. R. Jeyaraman, Dean in-charge presided over
the function and delivered inaugural address.
Dr. C.B.T. Rajagopalaswamy, Professor and Head
and Students Coordinator of this batch made
arrangements for the function and explained the
profile, rules and regulations of the college.
Dr.G.Jeyasekaran, Professor and Head and Warden
of the Students Hostel explained the rules and
regulations of the Hostel. Dr.K. Karal Marx,
Professor and Head and Vice President of Students
Association spoke on the cultural activities organized
by the institute.
Welcome programme for I year BFSc students
The FC&RI, Thoothukudi signed MOU with
Annammal College of Education, Thoothukudi on
18.10.2013 for handling of English Course for I BFSc
students using the Language Laboratory and Network
Research Center and for imparting soft skills to
SC/ST students of the institute.
Mr. Ganesan, Secretary, Annammal College of
Education and Dr.G. Sugumar, Dean in-charge,
FC&RI signed the MoU in the presence of the
Principal of Annammal College of Education for
Women, Thoothukudi.

2013 at Vins Christian College of Engineering,
Chunkankadak, Nagercoil. She has scored 7 points from 9
games and was placed in 25th in the merit list.

Awareness programme on preparation of ready to eat fish foods
An Awareness Programme on “Preparation of ready to
eat fish foods” was conducted at Fisheries Training and
Research Centre, Parakkai on 28.10.2013. Twenty
three participants including fisherwomen Self-Help
Groups, NGOs and College students attended the
programme. Lectures on ready to eat fish foods, their
preparation and hygienic handling of fishes were given
to the participants. A video demonstration on the
preparation of ready to eat fish foods was also
screened.

Training on value added fishery products
A training on “Value added fishery products” was
conducted at Fisheries Training and Research Centre,
Parakkai from 29.10.2013 to 30.10.2013. Twenty
seven participants including fisherwomen, Self-help
Groups, NGOs and School dropouts from
Kanyakumari district attended the programme.
Demonstrations on the preparation of value added fish
products like fish pickle, fish soup, fish cutlet and fish
bajji were conducted. Dr.S.David Kingston, Professor
and Head welcomed the gathering during the
valedictory function. Mr.R.S.Ganesan, Deputy Director
of Fisheries felicitated the programme and he
encouraged the trainees to produce quality fish
products and enhance their family income for a
sustainable livelihood. He also distributed certificates
to the participants. Miss. V.Viji, Senior Research
Fellow proposed vote of thanks.
