Indian Society of Agricultural Economics, India

The establishment of the Society in December 1939 constituted a

landmark in the progress in the study of Agricultural Economics in India.

In its establishment, a notable role was played by the late Lord L.K.

Elmhirst, the founder-President of the International Conference (now

Association) of Agricultural Economists and by Dr. T.G. Shirname. Among

the distinguished persons who occupied the post of President of the

Society in its formative years were the late Sir Malcolm Darling and Sir T.

Vijayaraghavacharya. But it was left to Sir Manilal B. Nanavati to infuse it

with a sense of purpose and direction. It was during his Presidentship

covering a period of 17 years from 1943 to 1959 that the Society acquired

its present status and stability. The Society is registered under the Societies

Registration Act, 1860 and the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. The

objectives of the Society are “to promote the study of social and

economic problems of agriculture and the rural areas and also to

promote technical competence for teaching and research in agricultural

economics and allied subjects.”These objectives are sought to be achieved

by (a) undertaking, organising, and co-ordinating research in problems of

agricultural economics and rural development and maintaining a

research library and documentation centre; (b) holding periodical

conferences and seminars and training courses; (c) publishing books,

reports, papers or summaries of papers either separately or collectively,

or in a periodical which may be issued under the auspices of the Society;

(d) co-operating with other institutions having similar objectives such as

the International Association of Agricultural Economists, the Indian

Economic Association, etc. The society also gives away awards and

fellowships to recognize meritorious research and professional

accomplishments.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its beginning as an

Agricultural School in Madras, Tamil Nadu, as early as 1868 and relocated

to Coimbatore as Agricultural College and Research Institute and later in

1971 upgraded into a full-fledged University. Since then the University is

unfailingly taking forward its mandate of agricultural education, research

and extension in the state. Over a hundred of years of its existence TNAU

has been hand in hand with the Government of Tamil Nadu in the

development of agriculture in the state. In 2020 ICAR ranking, TNAU was

ranked eight among 67 Agricultural Institutes, fourth among SAUs and

colleges, 52 research stations, 14 KVKs, TNAU is well placed to serve the

farming community. The University has brought out wide array of crop

varieties, crop management technologies and farm implements. Such

phenomenal performance was achieved because of generous research

grants from the State government, Government of India and other

external funding agencies. The University is fore runner in developing and

harnessing innovative technologies such as biotechnology, remote

sensing and GIS, market intelligence and price forecasting, nano

technology, e-extension, weather and agro-advisories etc.
