A number of community organisations in Tallaght have joined together to promote a new initiative for people who have not managed their money through a bank account in the past.  Called a “Standard Bank Account” (SBA). It is available to those 18 years of age or over who have no existing current account or who have not had an active current account in the last three years. It can be opened in a person’s own name or with someone else (who hasn’t had a bank account in the last three years). Full details of the SBA are available at the AIB, Bank of Ireland and permanent tsb banks in Tallaght. Pictured discussing details of the Standard Bank Account are, left to right: Ciara Halpin, permanent tsb; John McCormac, Respond; Aoife Ryan, Allied Irish Bank; Michael Boyle, SVP, Tallaght and Jennifer Peelo, Bank of Ireland, For those who have not managed their money through a bank in the past a Standard Bank Account will make it easier to manage household bills and use

a debit card rather than carrying cash. The pilot scheme, which in addition to Tallaght is also being rolled out in New Ross, Co. Wexford and the Tullamore, County Offaly. It is part of a Government-backed

strategy to address financial exclusion in Ireland and is being managed by The Financial Inclusion Working Group, chaired by the Department of Finance. The Group

also includes representatives of national NGOs (including One Family and SVP) as well Department of Social Protection, the banks involved and statutory bodies including MABS and the National Consumer Agency. The experience of the pilot will inform the account design and roll-out of a basic bank account product to all eligible people in the state at some point during 2013. A spokesperson for NGOs on the Working Group, John-Mark McCafferty of the Society of St Vincent De Paul (SVP) stated, ‘Our ultimate goal is to reduce financial exclusion and the negative effects that it has on people’s lives. Giving people access to the Standard Bank Account is seen as the first step in that process.’ John-Mark added, ‘The account will make banking more accessible to those who have traditionally not opened bank accounts.’ More information including a ‘Guide to the Standard Bank Account’ can be found on www.financialeducation.ie/standardbankaccount.

Tractor manufacturer Zetor is seeking to appoint a main dealer to represent the brand in Dublin – one of six counties in which the Czech manufacturer plans to make new appointments as part of their growth strategy for 2013 and beyond. Part of the agricultural scene in Ireland since the 1940s, Zetor tractors are now being distributed by Zetor Sales Ireland whose headquarters are in Birdhill, Co. Tipperary. Big selling models are the Forterra and Proxima, of which the recently-introduced 16-valve Forterra HSX attracted significant interest at the recent National Ploughing Championships. Shortly, the company will introduce a four-wheel drive, 80hp Zetor Major model which they say will be competitively-priced.

On Friday 23rd of November the Ulysses Pain Management Programme at Tallaght Hospital celebrated its 10 Year Anniversary. Since its inception, the Ulysses Pain Management Programme has helped over 640 patients take control of their chronic pain.

At least 30% of the Irish population may be suffering from chronic pain with an estimated cost to the economy of €5billion per year.

Speaking about the p-rogramme, Dr Camillus Power, Consultant in Pain Management & Director of the Ulysses Programme at Tallaght Hospital said: “Programmes such as Ulysses in Tallaght help people live better lives with their chronic pain. There is a pattern of management that can be put in place, using cognitive behavioural and physical therapy, that allows the patient have a much better quality

of life. This involves a wide range of health professionals, including doctors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and psychologists.”

“In the Ulysses Programme, we use simple principles such as daily exercise, relaxation techniques to manage stress, tips about keeping your mind ‘onside’ to encourage positive thinking, teaching people how to pace themselves, setting goals for themselves as they progress.”

The highlight of the 10 year anniversary celebrations was a symposium on pain management which was held on Friday 23rd of November at Tallaght Hospital. The symposium was addressed by international and national experts on chronic pain management, including Professor Michael Nicholas from Australia, author of the book ‘Manage your Pain’.

The DSPCA rescues thousands of sick, injured and cruelly treated animals each year. We rescue them from places and situations where otherwise they may not be alive today.

MEET SCAMP

This is Scamp a shy but sweet little dog, his eyes tell a very sad story. Scamp arrived to the DSPCA earlier this year in very bad condition. He was scared, confused and trusted no-one. Years of neglect meant that his coat had become so badly matted it was almost strangling him. He had serious parasite infestations, was underweight, malnourished and had severe dental issues.

DSPCA veterinary staff immediately got to work. They groomed and clipped back his coat. He was given antibiotics and medicated baths to treat his skin infections. Most of his teeth had to be removed and his gum disease treated.

At first Scamp did not want to leave his kennel and would not interact with anybody. As he began to feel better and went to a loving foster home, he realised that life has much to offer and that people can be kind. He loves his walks and is happiest when out and about sniffing and exploring. He is a wonderful dog and has melted the hearts of all who come in contact with him.

The DSPCA works hard to reduce suffering and create meaningful social change for these animals but we cannot do it without you.

Will you help us give them a second chance at life?

Tallaght Youth Band performed at the opening ceremony of ITT Dublin which was RTC Tallaght then and 20 years on they were happy to be involved in the anniversary celebrations. The band took the staff and students by surprise by performing a flash mob in the main foyer of the institute. To our knowledge this is the first time a marching band has performed a flash mob in Ireland and perhaps Europe. One of the drummers first began to play on the stairs and was then joined by other members of the band both on the ground floor level and on the upper mezzanine level. The crowd of students and staff who gathered to watch this short performance were suitably impressed and amused seeing a marching band play out of the blue. The band is happy with its ongoing association with the college with some of their current members being students

or past students of the institute. This summer saw the band use the college campus to practice for the field show competition season which was a huge contributing factor to the band taking the title of All Ireland Champions in September. Tallaght Youth Band would like to thank Mr Pat McLaughlin (ITT Dublin President) and all the institute staff for their continued support. The band was also delighted to perform for the opening of the award winning Zip way through the college earlier this year. This celebration brought community groups together in the college and highlighted the importance of ITT Dublin in the south Dublin area.http://youtu.be/o2sX0dPGEz4This is the link where the flash mob can be seen or from Tallaght Youth Band’s facebook page.

CHOOSE THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME 6 days a week

Christmas is fast approaching and as we prepare to get festive and celebrate, South Dublin Count Council is asking everyone to think about the environment. Every year each household generates a lot of extra of packaging waste over the Christmas period, an estimated 54kgs per household. So this Christmas South Dublin County Council is encouraging everyone to reduce and recycle their festive packaging.

The Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Cathal King said “Between now and Christmas we will buy roughly

32 million batteries (800 tonnes) this accounts for almost 40% of all batteries sold in Ireland every year. So if each of us brought back just one battery to the Civic Amenity or to the retailer when purchasing new ones 4 million batteries (100 tonnes) would be diverted from Ireland’s landfill! Now that’s a lot of batteries recycled through one simple action. We are always trying to encourage everyone to recycle in anyway they can, so I am delighted to see the Christmas decoration competition is being run again this year. I look forward to having a look at the results of this competition every year I am amazed by people’s creativity with recyclable materials.

Materials can be recycled at the following locations

· Ballymount Civic Amenity

· Bring banks: South Dublin County Council has 63 banks around the County

· Batteries recyclingwww.weeeireland.ie

· WEEE recycling: Clondalkin Community Recycling Initiativewww.recycleit.ie

To encourage everyone to consider the effective use of resources and take an active part in re-use and recycling South Dublin County Council has arranged a Christmas Decoration competition for all ages, Closing Date is 12th December 2012 Please fill in the form to be in with a chance to win.

Ely’s Kitchen

A piping hot bowl of soup is the ultimate comfort food during the winter months. Soup doesn’t have to be rich and creamy to be satisfying, tough. In this issue I am going to share with you one of my healthy winter soup recopies. This wonderful mix of kale, white beans and chunks of lean pork tenderloin are the main ingredients for a soup that’s satisfying and quick to make.Smoked paprika gives the soup a Spanish flair, some warm bread and slice cheese would do well on the side.

Ingredients:1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil1 pound pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces3/4 teaspoon salt1 medium onion, finely chopped4 cloves garlic, minced2 teaspoons paprika, preferably smoked1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper, or to taste (optional)1 cup white wine4 plum tomatoes, chopped4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth1 bunch kale, ribs removed, chopped (about 8 cups lightly packed)1 15-ounce can white beans, rinsed (see Tip)

Preparation:Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add pork, sprinkle with salt and cook, stirring once or twice, until no longer pink on the outside, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate with tongs, leaving juices in the pot.Add onion to the pot and cook, stirring often, until just beginning to brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Add garlic, paprika and crushed red pepper (if using) and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add wine and tomatoes, increase heat to high and stir to scrape up any browned bits. Add broth and bring to a boil.Add kale and stir just until it wilts. Reduce heat to maintain a lively simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the kale is just tender, about 4 minutes. Stir in beans, the reserved pork and any accumulated juices; simmer until the beans and pork are heated through, about 2 minutes.

The Dolphin and The Cat

Once upon a time there was a dolphin named Amy. Amy is  blue and black, and white. Amy had a sister called Niamh, and another sister named Briege and of course a mum and dad.

One day I think it was a Saturday, Amy was watching water-wars and eating  chips and when she talked well she didn’t talk she meowed that is in these times dolphins squeak and cats had meow. Any way one day Amy went to the Bakery to get a loaf of seaweed bread.

On her way back she stopped off at the bay to look for her friend the cat. This cat’s  name is Geraldine, Geraldine is ginger with a white belly and she squeaked. Amy couldn’t find Geraldine. Dolphins have very good hearing so . Amy heard a faint yell, the yell sounded like Geraldine voice. “ HELP!” screamed Geraldine.

Amy put Geraldine on the deck. Geraldine was alive “thank goodness” shrieked Amy in  relief. When Amy went to hug Geraldine because Amy was so happy that Geraldine was alive, that’s when she hugged Geraldine there were stars that appeared and they shined  so bright that Geraldine jumped out of her fur and Amy jumped into space!

When Amy tried to meow, she squeaked and when Geraldine tried to squeak she  meowed and to this day Geraldine and Amy never did find out what happened but if you go to the ocean you can probably still hear the voice of Amy and Geraldine.

WALKING TO THE MOON

Winter in Tallaght 2012

On winter nights

when the air is thin

and the sky is empty

I try walking to the moon.

I keep my destination

clearly in my sights,

like tonight,

the half moon beckons me

from its fixed position.

I’m walking in the dark

gauging my progress

from the trees I pass,

the rooftop shaped landscapes

I overtake.

I step out the pace a little faster,

the moon seems closer.

It isn’t an illusion,

I’ve been walking for years

to reach that place,

put many miles behind me….. Michael J. WhelanYou can still enter your team at http://fantasy.premierleague.com using the

Grey Beards & Silver TailsAs us humans get older it is important to take extra care of ourselves and here at the DSPCA vet clinic we feel that this is important for our older pets too. In general, pets over the age of seven are considered middle to senior aged and will benefit greatly from a regular check up with the vet or vet nurse. In recent years the life expectancy of Irish pets has increased due to the advancements in veterinary medicine, nutrition and general care. This is good news for our beloved pets!

As owners it is essential that we are aware of the conditions that may affect our older furry friends and the clinical signs to look out for. Unfortunately some of these clinical signs can be very subtle and therefore easy to miss. One example would be an older cat with chronic arthritis, the only clinical sign may be your cat becoming slightly withdrawn or not as sociable as he or she used to be. We find that regular 4-6 monthly check ups can help identify these subtle changes before they reach crisis point for you and your pet.

Some of the most common conditions

affecting our older pets include: Heart disease, kidney disease, arthritis, brain ageing, cancer, endocrine disease such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and Cushing’s disease. Early detection of any condition is extremely important when diagnosing and treating the

affected animal. We have outlined some of the common clinical signs or changes which you should look out for: noticeable stiffness, slowing down, for example not wanting to go for a walk or reluctance to climb stairs, drinking increased amounts, urinating more frequently, signs of incontinence, weight gain or weight loss, noticeable

increased appetite, showing signs of confusion, hair loss or skin changes, any new lumps or bumps and changes in personality.

If you have any worries or concerns please feel free to call the DSPCA Veterinary Hospital for some helpful advice on 01 4994700 or check out the DSPCA Veterinary Hospital at www.vetclinicdspca.ie.

Have you ever worried about what will happen to your pets after your are gone? Pet Guardian Programme is the DSPCA’s service, giving pet owners peace of mind. It means we’ll do all we can to find a new and loving home for your pet or pets in the event of your death. All too often, sadly, a large number of cats and dogs are left homeless following their owners’ death. Now you can ensure your pet is properly cared for in the event of this happening. Pitt donates to charity

Brad Pitt has come to the aid of baby unit while filming in Dorset, according to a charity organiser. She says she was stunned when he donated £700 in cash on the spot to her good cause.

Hollywood star Brad has been praised for his generosity while filming zombie film World War Z in Lulworth. Tricia Wilson-Hughes she was ‘completely dumbstruck’ when the actor donated the cash towards Southampton hospital’s neonatal unit. Tricia managed to raise £40 from passing members of the film crew, while working at a local gift shop and thought she would try her luck when Brad’s security guard came along. He apparently returned with £700 a short time later 47 families benefit at Christmas.

The Quincy Herald-Whig’s Good News of Christmas campaign started 24 years ago in Illinois in an effort to help less fortunate families enjoy the holiday season.

Volunteers donate their time and or money to the cause which helps 47 needy families every year. The families are chosen by caseworkers who look for families that may have lost jobs, experienced an expensive medical injury, or generally suffered a major set back.

“A lot of families have been working hard and something happened in the past year. It might have been a job loss, a medical situation which has given them a setback or made things really tight,” said Emily Robbearts, a caseworker for the campaign. “They’re working hard to hold it together but don’t have any extra for Christmas.”

Self taught teenager gets his reward.

Kevin Doe, a teenager living in Sierre Leone, has never taken a single engineering, physics, or electronics course in his life. He is a self taught engineer, and some might say he is a prodigy. Searching trash for scrap metals and spare parts, Kevin builds batteries, transmitters, and more. Even crazier is that the electricity in Sierre Leone comes on maybe once a week if you’re lucky. The rest of the week he sits in complete darkness. But that did not stop him. Massachusetts Institute of Technology invited Kevin to be a guest resident for 3 weeks. His dreams may finally be coming true in this very inspirational story.

The local government reforms announced   by the Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, represent the biggest shake-up of local government in the history of the State which will result in greater efficiencies and improved service delivery for the people of SDCC and people right across Ireland. “Local government structures have remained largely unchanged for more than 100 years and now more than ever we need to focus on doing more with less and getting better value for money. Today’s reform programme, entitled ‘Putting People First’ will see local government leading economic, social and community development through a more streamlined and better managed system that will save the taxpayer over €420 million when fully implemented. “Reform will be carried out under four main themes; Structures;

Funding, Accountability and Governance; Economic Development and Job Creation; and Delivering Services Efficiently. It will see all 80 existing Town Councils being replaced by a comprehensive system of municipal governance and the number of Councils going from 114 to 31. The number of Councillors will be reduced by 42% and the number of Council seats will be reduced from 1,627 to no more than 950. “’Putting People First’ aims to address the weakness in the current system and to re-build confidence and trust in local government. It will also place a greater emphasis on responsibility, with a Chief Executive Post replacing the local authority manager. This will ensure that, in the same way as the Chief Executive of a business is accountable to the Board of Directors, so the Chief Executive Post will be answerable to the elected members of the authority. “In line with national government policy, steps have also been taken to

assist the women of SDCC in playing a greater role at local level by overhauling the way business is conducted in terms of the timing of meetings and other arrangements. A focus will also be placed on economic development with economic development plans to form part of the  County Development Plan and one-stop-shops for business support to be provided through new Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs). “It is high time local government worked for the people of SDCC. As is the case with most other European countries, local services will soon be funded through a local property tax. This will ensure that better decision making is at the heart of what our councillors do. Individuals will also be facilitated in bringing issues regarding, roads, lighting and the local environment to their representatives via the new website, fixyourstreet.ie, a response from which will be received within two working days.”

Shake-up of local govt means greater efficiencies for people of S.D.C.C. -Cllr Lawlor

Dear AliceI am a 15 year old boy and I hate my life. I am in school doing my junior cert and I am probably one of the few in my class that actually wants to stay in school and do well. The way I see it is that if I manage to pass my leaving in a few years I might get an apprenticeship and eventually a good job. The problems is that all the lads I hang around with are into drugs and drinking cans, robbing out of the shops and mitching from school. I can’t tell them that I don’t want to do this. They would jeer me and probably beat me up. I am afraid not to go out with them because of what they will do but all I really want is to do well in school and get work when I’m older. Most of the people where I live are on the dole and I don’t want that life for me.Ben.

Dear Ben,Good for you knowing what you want for your future. What you need now is some help to make that happen. Is there anyone you can trust to talk to – an older brother or sister, parents, the

guidance counsellor in the school or perhaps a counsellor in one of the community group projects near you? Talking to someone will help you to stay strong and work towards achieving

your plans. Often gradual change is best. Can you

gradually move away from the lads that you are hanging around with now, stay home more in the evenings and catch up on your homework or study? What about joining a local club like football, sport, kickboxing or something like that and making new friends who have the same interests as you. The trick is not to fall out with the friends you have now but gradually move away from them, replace them with new people and become too busy to care what is happening with them. Best ofluck with the Junior Cert.

Dear Alice,I am a 40 old woman and have never

been married. I have had a few relationships but they didn’t last very long. Now I have fallen in love – what I think I have never felt before in my life. My boyfriend is great. He is romantic, funny, caring and always looks after me – in fact he spoils me rotten and I love this. The only drawback is that he is only 26. I feel too embarrassed to go out in public with him so I tend to cook at home, have movie nights where we rent films, eat popcorn and such in my house. We have gone out a couple of times and he wants to hold my hand or kiss in public and I feel dreadful and just want to get back indoors. I see how people look at us and all I can think of is being seen like a desperate, ridiculous “cougar”. It hurts him that I cannot cope with how other people would judge us but, for the moment anyway, he is very understanding. This is tearing me apart because I genuinely do love him and hate hurting him.Frantic, Deirdre.

Deirdre,Okay you know the good points here –

you are so lucky to have found a man to love and who loves you in return. Obviously he is not embarrassed by the age difference when he is out in public with you and he is kind and understanding when you are comfortable. It is not realistic to think that you can continue your relationship in secret for ever. You will need to brave the outside world sometimes. The more you do this the easier it will get. You say you can see how people look at you – so what? You are happy and in love with your boyfriend. He is happy and in love with you. Why not put your energy into the relationship instead of wondering what other people think? It could surprise you to know that usually people are so caught up with their own stuff they rarely have much time to worry about other couples. Also you say he is getting hurt by your reluctance to go out with him.Ask yourself which is most important – stopping hurting him or worrying about what the neighbours think? The neighbours will soon get used to seeing you together and stop even thinking about it. Enjoy your loving relationship and let it blossom.

The establishment of dedicated early intervention speech and language therapy services in disadvantaged areas has been recommended in a children’s report. The report found that a dedicated speech and language service would enable more children to receive the intervention earlier which would help to remove or reduce a significant disadvantage from them before starting school. The Report was launched by the Childhood Development Initiative which has co-ordinated research and evaluation of early intervention and prevention approaches to improve outcomes for children in Tallaght West since 2007. The Early Intervention Speech and Language Therapy Service was piloted from 2008-2011 and provided therapeutic support to 192 children who were otherwise unlikely to have been identified, referred, or supported through any other existing service in the area. 18% of children brought into the service were discharged following a period of support, meaning their skills had improved sufficiently to reach normal limits. Significantly more boys (62.5%) than girls (37.5%) were referred to the service. CDI Chief Executive Marian Quinn said the pilot addressed a real need within the community and would equally be of benefit in other communities across the country. “It is well-established that speech and language development can be of particular concern in disadvantaged areas and if this is not addressed by the time these children start primary school it causes difficulties for later literacy and learning. As well as the development of dedicated services for disadvantaged communities, we are recommending that all early years practitioners, teachers and related professionals receive appropriate training in speech and language development.” The programme was independently evaluated by the Centre for Social and

Educational Research at the Dublin Institute of Technology. The research also strongly highlighted the important role of parents. “Educating parents on the need for, and value of, speech and language therapy is vital to promoting attendance at speech and language services. Also services are responsible for ensuring that parents are appropriately informed and involved in their child’s therapy process,” Ms. Quinn said. Wider recommendations in the evaluation findings include: That all Government Departments commit to using evidence to inform planning and service delivery; That all services for children are evaluated, and those services and models which have no demonstrable impact on outcomes for children are incrementally removed, and replaced with evidence-based programmes.Given the success of the programme, CDI received additional funding last August for the Speech and Language Therapy service to continue in Tallaght until March 2013. The service also has also been more integrated into the existing services as the County Childcare Committee has taken on responsibility for employment of the therapists with support supervision from the HSE. CDI has worked in the community in Tallaght West since 2007 and in that time more than 2,000 children have participated in its eight programmes, of which the Early Intervention Speech and Language Therapy Service is one. CDI is one of three Prevention and Early Intervention Programme organisations, jointly funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and Atlantic Philanthropies. The Prevention and Early Intervention Programme explores new methods for improving outcomes for children in an integrated way, with a fund of €36 million.Pictured are Broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh with Jack Murphy and Faith Darcy at the launch.

Dublin South West representative Seán Crowe TD has welcomed members of the Irish Homeless World Cup team to Leinster House. The Irish team finished 16 out of 48 teams at the World Cup in Mexico earlier this month.

At a reception in Leinsten House Deputy Crowe welcomed the team and a presentation was made to goalkeeper David Byrne who was voted Goalkeeper of the tournament. Crowe who had met individual members of the team in Tallaght earlier in year said they were an inspiration and that they had helped shine spotlight on the challenge of homelessness. Deputy Seán Crowe said:“Today is about honouring the players who represented Ireland in the World Cup in Mexico namely; David Byrne, Ollie Carroll, Ian Gannon, Paul Fitzsimons, Michael Nevin, Keith Hogan, Wayne Reid, and Garreth Lynch.“During the tournament the Irish team played teams from well known football nations like Brazil, Ukraine, Poland, Argentina, Portugal, Norway, South Africa, and Scotland.

“The Big Issue League now has tournaments in towns and cities right across the country.

“In total over 500 young people compete in Street Leagues. The leagues culminate with an All-Ireland final that brings teams from North and South to participate in a one day event which was held in the An Post Club on the killtipper Road, Tallaght

earlier this year.

“Out of this tournament the current group of players were selected to represent Team Ireland.

“Particular congratulations must go to David Byrne in recognition of his personal achievement in being voted goalkeeper of the tournament.

“The lads are great role models and their commitment to overcome personal and other adversities in life, is an example to us all.

“Through their personal commitment they have focused a spotlight on the challenge of homelssness both here and around the world..

“I only hope that their sacrifice does not go un-noticed by official Ireland and that this will spur policy makers to greater efforts to tackle the homeless crisis that is estimated to effect up to 5,000 people.

The Irish Homeless team did us proud in the World Cup tournament, I want to use the opportunity of them visiting Leinster house and wish the team and their families every success in the future.”

Warm  Welcome For Homeless Team ’m Lisa and I am 35 and I play wing for

Tallaght RFC.I started playing rugby for the first time in my life after a work colleague approached me to play as they heard TRFC were starting up a womens team.My first reaction was to laugh and said “are you mad, me? play rugby? you must be joking.  I had never played a team sport in school never mind as an adult.I went up to the first training session and I have been hooked ever since. Being part of a team is definitely the way to enjoy a sport in my opinion.  I have found it a great way to get fit and make new friends  Not only are you part of a team which is like a family but also you are part of a club.  Within one year of joining I became the Women’s Development Officer for Tallaght RFC and now  it is a way of life for me.  I would not be without it and also the social side of the sport is amazing too.
