Perhaps it is early in the year because it is a major focus of Rotary. Perhaps it is just serendipity. Membership is important to us all, but how often have we watched our club dwindle because of aging members, boring programs or, lack of interest in the membership. Take a look at our membership trend since D7360 started. We have had between 2500 and 2600 members since our inception. We bring in as many or almost as many members as we lose every year. Since the 1990’s, Rotary International has had 1.2 million members, and the same scenario exists. Overall our membership is stagnant. Any club that is vibrant, busy and fun to be with has no problem getting new members. So, if your club has troubles in this area, maybe it is time to look within and ask why membership is such a difficult thing. Is your club welcoming to others? Some are and some are definitely not. Is your membership involved? Do your members look forward to coming to meetings? If your answer is NO to any of these questions, perhaps your club needs to change. Change is not easy. Go back to 1987 when we first admitted women. We lost many longtime misogynistic members, but we gained so much more from that simple change. New member bring new ideas. New members bring hands. August has been named "Membership Month” by Rotary International. Did you ever wonder why?

Perhaps it is because there is new, energetic and excited Leadership in the Rotary world, and it could be a time when such enthusiasm could entice new members.

New members can inject new camaraderie. New members will ensure a life for the club that transcends the currents membership.

Ask your club if your community would suffer without your presence. You answer will help determine the future of your club.

My goal for the year is to increase membership to at least 2600 members. You are part of the solution for the goal’s completion. I ask you to invite your friends, neighbors, business associates, family, etc. to join you in this great adventure called “Rotary”. Together we can be “Rotary Serving Humanity”.

Please scan and email the form on the next page

to [email protected] or mail the form to Kat Snowe, 919 W Fairmount Avenue, State College, PA 16801 Mike Galbraith from Morrisons Cove RC wrote:

I am excited about the contest and want to encourage our members to do make-ups, since we meet so many fine folks and learn so much about Rotary.

I joined Roaring Spring Rotary on 9/25/1988. On 9/25/2016 I plan to have 28 years of perfect attendance. Our Roaring Springs and Martinsburg clubs merged a few years ago. I am having the best of the best! My other joy is having several Paul Harris Fellow awards!

I did make-ups in probably 26 states, Canada, England, Scotland, and Canada. Many times, I was "volunteered" to be their guest speaker that AM, or PM, or help with their "Volunteer event.”

One night in South Central Michigan, I found a restaurant out in the farm country, but the lights were "not" on. Inside a Rotary was ready to meet. Sat next to a gentleman almost 100 years old and had perfect attendance for 75 years. The next Saturday the Michigan Governor was due to fly in on the state helicopter and honor him at a celebration. I was back home by then and could not attend. Wish I could have been there!

We have gone to FL several winters now and do makeups at 2 clubs near Bradenton, FL. I probably do 15-16 make-ups there each winter. If we had held this contest when I traveled, I would have had many, many make-ups at other clubs. Doing Rotary make-ups is fun and we meet many great folks! So again, thanks for great idea!!! Since 2008, the Rotary Dream Teams come to India every year to work hands –on with humanitarian projects in the heart of India. Before or after the project, they also take a short holiday to enjoy a slice of India’s many contrasting cultural flavors and landscapes.

In 2017, our project is located in the Indian state of Punjab. It presents a unique experience for those who like to Make a Difference, like the Outdoors, and cherish close interaction with distant cultures.

The Rotary Dream Team – India 2017

Project Highlights in 2017

We will participate in a Polio NID (National Immunization Day) in the Mewat district (Haryana), where the latest polio case had been reported as recently as January 2010.

We will not only administer the drops to village children, but shall also lead a rally through the village streets to advertise how critical it is for parents to bring their children for the drops, every NID, every six weeks.

In the heart of rural India, we will work with our hands as part of the labor force to build two check dams 1km apart, near the Sikh religious center of Anandpur Sahib in the India state of Punjab. The project will be funded by a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation. The project will have a far reaching, long-term and sustainable impact on the welfare of an impoverished but colorful and vibrant community. The dams will help surrounding villages to increase their annual crop yield by 50 percent, by trapping the rain water that gushes down from the hills in the monsoon months but rushes away without benefiting the local population.

This is a unique opportunity to live and work with the real, Eternal India: rustic, curious, warmly welcoming, a collage of timeless pastoral scenes. The level of physical fitness required to enjoy this activity is no more than that of a normally active person. Since we will be working in tandem with local foremen and labor teams, prior experience or expertise in construction is not required. We will stay near the project site in an exclusive tented camp specially put up for our team. The tents are in the Swiss Cottage style, with two beds and an attached WC (western style with flush), shower, and washbasin, with running hot & cold water.

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE PDG Carl E. Hill, District Chair

A YOUTH EXCHANGE REFLETION I had the opportunity recently to visit a

friend, former Rotarian and Past President of the Rotary Club of State College Downtown, W. Douglas Holmes. Doug was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in 1969 to Sweden being sponsored by District 7410, Scranton/Wilkes Barre area. A long time employee of Penn State and President of the State College Downtown Club in 2006-2007, Doug was involved for several years on the District Youth Exchange Committee and as a host parent and father of an outbound student.

At the present time, Doug is having several medical problems but he was able to recall with clarity, his year in 1969-1970 in Sweden having three host family and a wonderful hosting club. When asked about his year abroad, Doug said, "the whole year was tremendous'. He hopes that he will be able to be involved again at the Club and District level. As we celebrate 50 years of Youth Exchange in District 7360, we give thanks for those who have benefited from the experience and who have shared back in Rotary service to the program. ROTEX PICNIC

On Sunday, August 7th , approximately fifty five 2015-2016 outbounds, their parents and District Committee members shared in an evaluation session and picnic at the Community Park in Tyrone.. It is a time for the outbounds and their parents to evaluate the program and share experiences. Remembering that the Committee last saw the students at the District Conference in April of 2015, it is always amazing to observe the tremendous growth and maturity that has taken place during the exchange year. The sponsoring clubs are encouraged to invite the students for a weekly program presentation.

OUTBOUND APPLICATIONS FOR 2017-2018

The District is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year. Kathy Krinks, out District Outbound Coordinator,, began accepting applications on August 1st. The preliminary application and instructions may be found on the District 7360 Rotary Youth Exchange website. All Club Presidents and Assistant Governors have received e-mail attachments of the necessary application materials. All applications are due to Kathy by November 1 with District Interviews scheduled for November 19-20 at the Martinsburg Elementary School in Martinsburg PA. The Morrisons Cove Club is hosting our inbound students for the weekend. RECRUITMENT OF OUTBOUNDS

Clubs are encouraged to enlist the support of local high school guidance departments asking for the opportunity to make a presentation to students interested in applying for the 2017-2018 academic year.

The District Chair and other Committee members are available to assist in the presentation. Best practice seems to be to have interested students sign up for the meeting very similar to what colleges and universities do in their high school campus visits. Large group assemblies are not usually effective. Call or e-mail Carl at 814-571-6677 or [email protected]
