September 22, 2009 50th Year Golden Anniversary Celebration

Last week, approximately 370 people gathered at The Lexington Municipal Complex to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of your Greater Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center. Although it was a wonderful oppor-tunity to acknowledge and reflect on the many achievements and the remarkable successes and rapid growth of Lexington County and the Chamber over the past 50 years, it was also a time to challenge the

new generation of Lexington business leaders to commit to the development of a County that is second to none in the delivery and quality of education and workforce development, the promotion of public-private partnerships for the benefit of business and the community, and a commitment to achieving a standard of living, quality of life and employment opportunities that attract tourists, new residents, and new businesses and investment to our area. I congratulate every member of the Chamber family on their success and achievements over the past 50 years and I am excited about the limitless potential for many groundbreaking and momentous achievements in the years to come. We have much to celebrate on this milestone occasion, both in the past and as we look to the promising future. The new

Chamber branding and logo and the new state of the art Chamber website--which is the leading internet portal into and about Lexington County--are tremendous first steps in this direction. Words and phrases such as, “Make It Happen!”, “how far?” and “why not?” resonate in the Chamber offices and in Chamber gatherings. At the Greater Lexington Chamber we are excited about the future. We can’t wait for tomorrow--Come Grow With Us Today!

As we continue to look ahead to a brighter economic future, we must continue to be relevant and an essential organization in the Greater Lexington Community. Our Chamber is going through a complete re-branding metamorphosis. We understand the importance of change and unless we change with the current business environment we will eventually cease to exist. The Greater Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center‘s (as we are called now to emphasize and promote our selves as the County’s Visitor’s Center) mission is to insure that both our businesses and community are continuously growing and making a positive impact on the quality of life around us. The new logo illustrates the dynamic and progressive nature of our Chamber. The black and silver symbols encircling the Lexington “L” symbolizes action and movement swirling into the future. At the center of our re-branding initiative is a new state-of-the-art web site. The site contains user focused features such as a complete Marketplace where people can shop for goods and services, a Community Employment Page that can be updated by our members, our exclusive Member to Member (M2M) Discount Program and a Community Calendar of Events. A major feature contained in the new site is the Visitor’s Center designed to promote and foster tourism to our very special Lexington community. Our new site represents an “electronic smorgasbord” of just about anything and everything you want to know. It is truly a one-stop shop and information center. That will prove to be an effective and valuable tool in our Chamber’s continuous development. In summary, our Chamber is at the very core of our community. And you, as members, are the Chamber. It is you that make our community so strong. So let’s go about making it even better.

As I was finishing a presentation to a local Rotary Club, I was asked my opinion on what we need in South Carolina to spur economic development and to create jobs for our citizens. My reply was simple: leadership and funding. The leadership needed starts in the office of the Governor: we must have a governor that sees job creation as a key deliverable of that office, and one who will take the neces-sary steps to ensure the proper positioning of South Carolina in the global compe-

tition for the jobs of the future. Additionally, we need leaders in the Legislature that will make funding for economic development a priority for the state budget. We are thirteen months from the general election in November 2010. Now is the time to ask the candidates for governor about the specifics of their platform for economic development. Call your House member or your Senator and ask him/her about their position on funding for economic development. South Carolina, Lexington County, and the Town of Lexington need these jobs and the economic prosperity these jobs will bring.

Marianne Pappacoda was born and raised in Branford, Connecticut. She began her career in the banking industry in 1990. In 2003, Marianne graduated from the Connecticut School of Finance and Management. In 2006, she and her husband relocated to South Carolina where Marianne began working for Security Federal bank as an Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager. She is also a Charter Officer of the Lake Murray Lions Club and the Vice President and Treasurer for the Lexington Business Association.

September's Breakfast Meeting was sponsored by Edward Jones Investments. For decades, we've believed in building relationships through face-to-face interaction, and adhering to a strategy of recommending quality investments that have proven themselves over time. We understand that this approach might be considered unfashionable. But if it means helping our clients achieve their goals, whether for retirement, education, or just financial security, it's an approach we plan to stick to.

PALMETTO PAYROLL SOLUTIONS is a complete payroll service combining over 30 years of payroll experience to work for you. We

are proud to be Columbia based, and have the capability to effectively serve the payroll needs of businesses throughout the United States. Four reasons to trust your payroll hassles to PALMETTO PAYROLL SOLUTIONS INC. 1. We are South Carolina based and located in Columbia near all Federal and Regulatory agencies Ask yourself this question, why rely on a faceless, out-of-town corporation to handle the delicate task of paying your employees? Trust local professionals who can work with you face-to-face when critical issues arise. We are small business owners just like you, and know what it's like to be 'chief cook and bottle washer'. We cherish the relationships we've built with our clients, and stand behind them in their pursuit of success. 2. Service that's a breath of fresh air. Our company was founded on the radical philosophy of letting customers deal directly with the boss, not a call- center representative. Because everyone in our organization is a front-line service provider, there's never a gap between what's promised and what's delivered. That's a novel approach these days, and we think it's better. 3. The lowest rates for premium-service support. We don't employ expensive salespeople. We're building our business organically, one reputation at a time. And while our national competitors try to be everything to everyone, our resources are efficiently focused on South Carolina. Our mindset of connecting directly with our clients without wasteful layers of bureaucracy allows us to offer unparalleled value in the marketplace. 4. Accountants love us! Your CPA is a trusted advisor and you want them focused on high-value, strategic issues. At the same time, most CPAs want nothing to do with messy, low-margin payroll processing. Each payday, we deliver comprehensive reports to both you and your accountant (if you wish), allowing them to see a clear snapshot of your payroll operations and keep focused on the bigger picture. Promotion refers to marketing activities that create awareness of your business and/or product. These activities get the word out so potential customers know what you have to offer. Promotion also includes activities such as community involvement, sponsorship of special events, giving away specialty items (key chains, hats, pens) and discounts. These activities allow you to subtly promote your product or company because the focus is on the event or specialty item. During these economically challenging times, a great way to promote your business, your goods and services is through your Chamber’s member-to-member discount program.
