Ouija Board Scratched From Vase, Retired cont.

A Magical Career... The Hong Kong Vase was to have brought the curtaindown on Ouija Board=s extraordinary career, whichspanned three seasons at the highest level. LordDerby=s homebred, beaten a length when third in herdebut at two, graduated as the even-money favorite inher second outing at Yarmouth in October 2003. TheRacing Post commentary of that novice race concludedthat the Cape Cross filly Alooks sure to win in decentcompany next year.@ A true understatement, even if sheended her juvenile campaign with a third in the ListedMontrose Fillies S. Her three-year-old season beganwith a six-length success in the Listed Pretty Polly S.,which preceded a seven-length coronation in the G1Oaks S. at Epsom a month later. She duly added the G1Irish Oaks at The Curragh in July and made her nextstart in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe in October, when she had a troubled trip, but managed to be thirdby 1 1/2 lengths to Bago (Fr). Sent to Lone Star for theGI Breeders= Cup F/M Turf, the three-year-old defeatedsix Grade I winners and earned herself an Eclipse Awardas U.S. champion turf female as well as the CartierHorse of the Year honor. Ouija Board began 2005 witha distant seventh in the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. at theRoyal meeting, but emerged with a splint injury andmissed the rest of the summer. She returned to capturethe G3 Princess Royal S. in September before travelingonce again for the Breeders= Cup at Belmont, where sheran second to champion Intercontinental (GB) in the F/MTurf. She followed that with a close fifth in the G1Japan Cup in Tokyo before concluding 2005 with avictory in the G1 Hong Kong Vase in December. Sport-ingly kept in training this year at five, the dark baybegan 2006 with a fourth in the G1 Dubai SheemaClassic at Nad al Sheba in March, then missed by lessthan a half-length when third in the G1 Queen ElizabethII Cup at Sha Tin the following month. She returned toEngland for the G1 Coronation Cup June 2 and woundup second to Shirocco (Ger), but found her way back tothe winner=s enclosure with a popular victory in the G1Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot three weeks later.

Fifth in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. July 8, Ouija Boardemerged as the winner in a thrilling battle with Alexan-der Goldrun (Ire) in the G1 Nassau S. at Glorious Good-

wood Aug. 5 before succumbinglate to Dylan Thomas (Ire) in theG1 Irish Champion S. Sept. 9 atLeopardstown. She then earnedher second Breeders= Cup title inthe F/M Turf before heading toJapan, where she ran a gallantthird to Deep Impact (Jpn) in theG1 Japan Cup Nov. 26 in whatwould be her final trip postward.

In all, Ouija Board compiled a record of 22-10-3-5 withearnings of ,3,510,682 ($5,102,985), just ,160,000shy of Singspiel=s mark for a horse bred in Great Britain.

DANEHILL COLT SETS RECORD AT HK SALEWidely expected to be the topper before setting foot inthe ring of yesterday=s Hong Kong International Sale, atwo-year-old Danehill coltsold for HK$7,500,000,the highest price ever atthe auction. The previousrecord was HK$6 million.Cheng Keung Fai purchasedthe handsome bay, lot 15,produced by the Secretariatmare Sister Dot. A half-brother to championDehere, the Irish-bred colt was the final Danehill juve-nile to be sold at public auction; he was purchased as ayearling by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for i360,000at the 2005 Goffs Orby Million Sale. The second-high-est price at yesterday=s sale was HK$4,400,000 for lot 30, a gelding by More Than Ready. Bought by indus-trialist Sui Pak Kwan, he will be trained by DavidFerraris, who said, AI have the only other son of MoreThan Ready in Hong Kong, and like this horse and sirevery much.@ Foaled in Australia, the son of DaintyDancer (Aus) (Al Hareb) was acquired by the HongKong Jockey Club for NZ$120,000 at the New ZealandBloodstock Premier Yearling Sale. In all, 28 lots sold forHK$81,200,000, leading to a 63-percent increase inaverage to HK$2,900,000. AIt was not a bargain sale, but Thoroughbreds worldwide have become more ex-pensive and, combined with the currency weaknesshere and other factors, it was in line with overalltrends,@ said Winfred Engelbrecht-Bresges, HKJC=sexecutive director of racing. AWe are considering theidea of some races confined to horses from our sale sothat we can show our support for the enthusiasm ofthe purchasers.@ Complete results are available onwww.cxhkir.com/english/hkir2006/hkis/hkis06_results.asp.
