Berkeley Homes (Capital) Plc
is part of The Berkeley
Group and is made up of two
divisions, Berkeley Homes
(South East London) Ltd and
Berkeley Homes (North East
London) Ltd. Whilst the two
divisions operate as separate
companies, they have
come together to develop
and deliver the REACH
apprenticeship programme.
What is an apprenticeship?
There are over 100 different apprenticeships in the construction industry, from bricklaying, plastering or steel fixing to more technical, planning and supervisory roles.
Around three million people work in construction in the UK, making it one of the country’s biggest and most diverse industries. With a career in construction, our apprentices will be part of a global industry with loads of exciting and rewarding construction jobs to choose from.
As one of the UK’s most successful property developers, The Berkeley Group is committed to encouraging the brightest and best young people to become apprentices and develop their careers within our company and the construction industry.
An apprenticeship is
a great alternative
to college and
university, because you
can earn and learn
at the same time and
apprentices are very much
valued by businesses
and employers.

Reach Apprenticeship Programme
Unlike most apprenticeship programmes,
all apprentices are directly employed by
Berkeley Homes (Capital) PLC so we can
really focus on developing technical
and practical knowledge as well as
interpersonal skills. This opens up
different routes into an industry where
there is a real skill shortage.

CARPENTRY APPRENTICE
STARTED REACH IN OCTOBER 2016
RAINÀ MALCOLM:
“I considered doing an
apprenticeship as it meant
I'd be able to gain academic
qualifications and practical
skills all whilst earning.”
RAINÀ MALCOLM:
“Apprenticeships have
changed and people’s
opinions of apprenticeships
have changed for the
better. The stigma
associated with them is
unfounded.
I found this out by
doing my research.”
RAINÀ MALCOLM, AGE 20

STARTED REACH IN OCTOBER 2016
When she finished her A-levels, 19-year-old Rainà Malcolm from Haringey knew that she didn’t want to go to university but still wanted to continue studying.
Rainà took a gap year and worked in hospitality and retail but when the gap year came to an end she needed to focus on her next career move.
“I chose to apply for the Reach Apprenticeship because I liked what Berkeley Homes (Capital) Plc stood for and the fact that they give back to the community, not to mention the fact that each development is unique. I can learn the basics and potentially move into design or management and progress my career.”
GEORGE WATTS:
“This has been the most
rewarding decision of
my life. I get to work
for a massive world-
class developer on
amazing sites. No other
apprenticeship at the
time was offering the
full package or talking
about the progression.
I get to split my time
between learning on
the job doing actual
tasks that I see results
from and attending
college, learning the
theory and carrying
out practical work.”
George Watts from Islington realised at the age of 16, that the traditional academic route was not right for him and started looking at apprenticeship opportunities.
GEORGE WATTS:
“The apprenticeship has
helped me to realise my
potential and the Reach
Apprenticeship Programme
not only offers me the
chance to develop my
academic and practical
skills that are needed for the
industry, but also gives me
the opportunity to develop
my personal skills.”

Meet our apprentices
George Edwards:
“The quality of this
apprenticeship is
outstanding. You know
you’re supported at every
level, when the management
team take the time out to
get to know you and care
about your development.”
GEORGE EDWARDS, AGE 20
INTERIOR FITTER
STARTED REACH IN OCTOBER 2016
After leaving school, George Edwards, 20 years old from Islington decided that he wanted to follow a traditional higher education route and started an ICT course. Three months into the course he realised that this was not right for him and decided to go into construction.
George Edwards:
“I knew I wanted to try my
hand at construction so
I signed up to do a level 2
construction operations
apprenticeship with another
contractor. However, this
was low paid, had no benefits
and no support network.”
“Although I achieved this
apprenticeship, I felt
that I lacked real on-
site experience. REACH
apprenticeships however,
allows me to work on
outstanding award-
winning developments.”
MIKAYLA TILSON:
“I left college as I wanted
to combine my learning with
on-site experience because
I get double the benefit by
completing my diploma and
NVQ whilst learning from
professionals on site. Not
to mention the fact that the
apprenticeship has helped
me develop independence
and confidence.”
MIKAYLA TILSON, AGE 17
PAINTING APPRENTICE
STARTED REACH IN OCTOBER 2016
17-year-old Mikayla Tilson from Greenwich thought that after completing her GCSEs she’d go straight into traditional higher education. Though apprenticeships were mentioned at school, Mikayla said that the “stigma” – that they’re for the less academically able students – initially put her off.
Mikayla signed up to do her Painting Diploma Level 1 at college but quickly realised that an apprenticeship would be more beneficial for her, both academically and professionally.
How to apply?
Berkeley foundation
We do this through a number of partner charities that tackle some of the most pressing social problems affecting young people today, including homelessness and unemployment. The money raised comes part from the Berkeley Group, and also through the tireless and inventive efforts of our staff.
We have set a goal for The Berkeley Foundation to invest 10 million pounds over the next five years to support young people and their communities. Every penny will be spent on charitable activities and worthy causes to ensure that maximum benefit is achieved.
REACH Apprentices are encouraged to get involved and support the Berkeley Foundation through local fundraising and initiatives.
The Berkeley Group takes
social responsibility
very seriously. In 2011
we set up The Berkeley
Foundation, with the aim
of supporting Britain’s
young people and their
