    Currency and Changing Money

    The currency used in Taiwan is the NewTaiwan (NT) Dollar. Banknotes come indenominations o NT$2000, NT$1000,NT$500, NT$200, and NT$100;coins come in denominat ions oNT$50, NT$20, NT$10, NT$5, andNT$1. One U.S. dollar is about NT$33 (aso July 2009). Money can be exchanged at

    Taoyuan and Kaohsiung international airports, and atlarge tourist hotels.

    Tax RefundTravelers holding oreign passports are eligible or a reund o the

    value-added tax (VAT) on purchases o NT$3,000 and above (includingtax) on a single day at the same posted VAT-reund stores, so long as

    they depart Taiwan within 30 days o the purchase. The buyers mustobtain a VAT-reund application, bearing the stores Uniied Invoicestamp, rom the store where the purchases are made. Prior to leavingTaiwan, the travelers must take the application together with the tax-reund goods (which must not have been used) to the VAT reundcounter at the airport to obtain the reund. Rememberthe date o

    departure must be no more than 30 days aterthe date o purchase.

    3. Making calls in TaiwanTo make a local call, dial only the 6- to 8-digit telephone number. I you

    are in Taipei and calling the Taipei number (02)1234-5678, or instance, you

    need dial only 1234-5678. I you are calling a number in a city or country

    other than that where you are located, you need to dial the area code frst (02

    or Taipei and 03 or Taoyuan, or example) and then the telephone number.

    Postal ServiceGeneral operating hours or post oices in Taiwan are 8am-5pm

    Monday through Friday, but some post oices provide services onweekends and holidays as well. Types o mail include ordinary letters,prompt delivery, registered mail, express delivery, and packages.Stamps can be purchased in post oices, hotels, and convenience

    stores. 7-Eleven and FamilyMart convenience stores provide expressparcel delivery services or both Taiwan and overseas.

    Power SupplyTaiwan uses 110-volt electricity, and the most common socket is the

    two-prong type. I you bring an appliance that uses a dierent voltage,you must use a transormer and plug adapter.
