Thought for the day - Don’t wait for the perfect moment, take the moment and make it perfect. WELCOME Welcome back to another stunning year at Tahunanui School! A special welcome to all our new families and students and to our new staff members. It is wonderful to have you join our community and we hope your time with us will be happy and successful. Next week we have our Meet the Teacher/Meet the Family evening here at school. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to find out more about your child’s class and make some new acquaintances. It will be a nice and relaxed evening and often the other parents you meet from your child’s class become friends of your own so it is well worth the effort – see details later in this newsletter. Thank you so much to everyone for the great start we’ve had this year too – one of the smoothest ever. Your efforts in organising uniforms and stationery, checking bags for togs, hats and notices and making sure everyone gets a good night’s sleep really does make a difference and allows us to get straight into learning programmes. Well done! MEET THE TEACHER/MEET THE FAMILY EVENING 5-7PM TUESDAY 16 FEBRUARY You are warmly invited to accompany your child/ren to our Meet the Teacher/Meet the Family evening next Tuesday. WELCOME TO OUR NEW

2016 STAFF MEMBERS

Kia Ora. My name is Monika Burrows. I am very excited about joining the Burrell team in Tamaki this year. It is also lovely being back at Tahunanui school having taught here at the beginning of my teaching career last century! I have also moved into the Tahunanui community and am already enjoying early morning walks along the beach. I have a passion for teaching and learning and inspiring our tamariki to be the best they can be. I enjoy

all aspects of the creative arts, especially drama and am excited about using this to extend and enrich other areas of the curriculum. Thanks for making me feel so welcome in my first week and I look forward to meeting more families as the year goes on.

While Jacinda Beyer-Rieger is already well known to most of you, she has taken on a new role this year as our School Sport Coordinator and is busy learning a whole new range of administration skills!. Jacinda is currently organising teams for Term 1 and is the go-to person for any out of school sport. She will also be using the noticeboard in the window of the library resource room to keep you up to date on any other sporting

opportunities but if you have any sports related questions, do give Jacinda a call through the office or email her at [email protected]

A special welcome to Ferne Walton who has joined our staff as a breakfast club assistant and relieving support staff member. Ferne has helped out in so many ways around our school over the years, it’s lovely to finally be able to put her on the payroll and we’re thrilled to have her on the team.

SPORTS NOTICES Reminder - all sports notices must be in by tomorrow Thursday 11 February as some sports start next week. Parent help is still required for managing teams on the day. - Mrs Beyer-Rieger, Sports Coordinator

TAHUNANUI SCHOOL GALA

SUNDAY 13 MARCH 2016

11am-2.30pm Be sure to mark this day on your calendars, so you don’t miss out

on the biggest event of the year in our community. Preparations are well under way with the gala team having had its first meeting. Proceeds from this gala will go towards our major playground redevelopment.

We desperately need helpers before and on the day. If you can help please contact Mel Harvey 0210452784, Ferne Walton 0273441213 or email [email protected].

White Elephant - There is a large container at school so that you can drop off items for the white elephant stall.

Note !!!!!!!!!! No electronic equipment, this includes

televisions, computers, hard drives, monitors etc. It costs the school to dispose of this equipment as no one buys it.

Clothing - Please, only clothing of saleable value. The clothing must be clean, of good quality and in good repair. Again it costs the school to try and dispose of large quantities of clothing that does not sell.

Books - Tania our school librarian is currently organising the book stall. Good quality saleable books, CD, DVDs and magazines (less than 1 year old) can be dropped into the library any time. A class competition for the most books donated is running so please write your child’s name and room number on book bag if you wish them to enter.

Wanted - Clean banana boxes with lids. Please deliver to the library. Thank you.

We are also looking for donations from local businesses and artists for the art and leisure auction and for prizes on the chocolate wheel. So if you know a business or somebody that can donate goods please contact Mel 0210452784, Kim Welsh 021489483, email [email protected] or donations can be dropped at the school office. If you need donations of goods to be uplifted please leave a message at the school office.

New parents are welcomed with open arms to join the gala team. We meet every Thursday at 2pm in the staffroom.. Thank you for your help. - Gala Team

There is a small group who meet on Thursdays at 9.30am who are welcoming people to join them for a bit of gardening. There is also a facebook page with information about the project, Burrell Park Community Gardens. - Heidi Newland, Enviro School Facilitator

STATIONERY Once again the pre-purchasing of student stationery

by parents has enabled a quick and efficient start to the term. Thank you. It is great to see many exercise books covered. It protects them and makes them extra special.

PIANO/KEYBOARD

LESSONS Liz Buchanan has a few spaces available for a half hour piano lesson during school hours. You can contact her on 542 3219 after 6pm, or 021 61 7261 email [email protected] for more details.

DRUM LESSONS Will be available again this year on a weekly basis. For further information please contact Andreas on 027 3155 079 or email [email protected].

ABSENCES All classes are using an electronic attendance register. To comply with the Ministry of Education’s expectations all student absence must be coded. Any unexplained absence is deemed truancy. Please help us to get it right by providing a note or a phone message by 8.45am explaining why your child is away.

This enables the office staff to know who is not at school by 9.10am and to start checking straight away. This is obviously a safety benefit. Any student who is late, that is after the bell, must report to the office to say they are here.

POOL KEYS We have a limited number of pool keys available $50.00 (includes $10.00 key bond) for the remainder of the swimming season. These can be purchased at the school office.

Reminder - The pool area is smokefree. Pre-schoolers must wear swimming nappies and there is to be NO food or glass in the pool area or changing rooms. Please put the cover on if you are the last person in at night. Many thanks, from your happy pool caretaker

PAYMENTS - trips, performers, donation, camps etc To improve efficiency and record keeping most incidental costs will again be invoiced directly to you. In normal circumstances the invoices will be sent once or twice per term. The intention is to also enable families to pay in instalments and manage the year’s school expenses across the four terms.

The first invoice will be posted shortly. Initially the invoice will look high but hopefully regular and predictable costs will help budgeting at home and school.

Payments can be made electronically (see invoice) or at the office by eftpos or by placing money in an envelope with your child’s name and room number and what it’s for. This can be placed in the payments box and receipts will be issued.

For students to participate in extra curriculum activities eg sports fees, payment must be made prior to your child starting the activity.

If parents/whanau have financial difficulties please talk to the school as we may be able to assist. Thank you for your cooperation. - Board of Trustees
