I don’t usually struggle for words but I am this time! The reality that my time here is nearly over is hitting home. My thanks to everyone, staff, parents and students for the privilege of being part of this great school. I leave with a sense of contribution and satisfaction that together over 17 years we have tried to be the best school we can be. It has seen many wonderful things happen in, around and out of classrooms. I am immensely grateful to the whole school community for being a big part of my life and that of my family. It has enabled me to grow as a principal and a person. Although I look forward to a new direction and opportunities, Tahunanui School will remain very close to my thoughts. I know you will give Barbara Bowen your support. Tahunanui School remains in good heart and hands. - Paul Drummond SCHOOL GALA An absolutely brilliant success in every measure! Fantastic weather and an amazing fun family day, and we also raised $23,000. Funds raised will go towards upgrading and developing our playground. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the day or its preparation. This wonderful event is a fitting tribute to all the behind the scenes work. We are also highly appreciative of the generous support of local businesses and artists from around Nelson. We will continue to acknowledge them and please say thanks when you shop there next! Our sincere thanks to everyone who supported the gala. Its success is because everyone gets behind it. Special congratulations to our convenor Lee Corlett and the outstanding committee. - Paul Drummond What a fantastic day!! Many thanks to our students and their parents, wider family members, our great teaching and support staff, invited guests, businesses and artists from throughout the region who contributed to make our gala the success that it was. To all of those who volunteered their time to obtain and collect donated goods or prizes and especially those who gave of their time to help out prior to and on Gala Day our sincere thanks. We welcome any feedback or suggestions, so please feel free to drop any comments into the office - planning for Gala 2016 will begin with a meeting in November! GREEN NINJAS

On Wednesday the 11th of March the Green Ninjas set off to go to the Motuora Mission at Rabbit Island. When we got there we went and got the maps. There were lots of other schools. While we looked at the map we ate our morning tea. We got put into two teams, The Kingfishers and The Great White Sharks and then the mission began. There were 26 activities and we had to do as many as we could in 2 hours. The first one we did was identifying good soil so we smelt it and felt it. Our team The Kingfishers favourite activity was probably finding the right wood to make a fire that does not smoke too much, so no fresh wood. It wasn't the easiest job. Then the man checked the wood to see if it’s good enough. Then we got to have a fresh made pikelet from the outside BBQ with jam or maple syrup. It was delicious! Other activities included identifying weeds, looking at pine trees, playing Bird Guess Who and many more. It was a really fun day and we all had a great time. - Georgia D and Georgia I

POOL KEYS

The pool will close for the season on Thursday 2 April. Please return keys to the school office. Once your key has been returned the $10.00 bond will be credited to your account.

UNIFORM - We are proud of our uniform and thank parents for helping their children to wear it correctly. We do not police the uniform strictly but we do remind students on what is and isn’t correct. eg hoodies, denim shorts and skirts are not part of the uniform. Anything plain or navy blue is ok.

ROOM 7 GALA BAKING

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES March 2015 brings to an end a wonderful period in the history of Tahunanui

School. Paul Drummond, who has served as Principal for the past 17 years, is leaving us. Paul arrived in Term 2 1998 and has lead the school through an exciting time of change with the development of the Muritai centre, upgrade of the swimming pool, new library and the continued development of the modern learning environments as well as the task of M.C. for the galas! We will miss Paul’s leadership and humour as witnessed in most newsletters. The school community wishes you well Paul and may your wonderful cooking keep Sue happy for many more years. Parents and families are invited to a farewell assembly for Paul to celebrate the outstanding service to education and as our principal on Wednesday 1 April at 2pm in the Muritai Centre. - Lee Corlett, Chairperson PARENT AND TEACHER CONFERENCES Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 March Reminder - This is an opportunity for parents and teachers to have a conference in order to share information and plan ahead. You can book your conference times on line.

Bookings close tomorrow 3pm Wednesday 25 March. Go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz. Enter the school code

YNRJK and follow the prompts. A reminder that this year we are introducing a written mid year report. This replaces

folders. Students will finish early at 2pm on Monday 30

March. Please arrange alternative care for your children between 2 and 3pm on the Monday . A crèche will run in the library from 3.00pm both days. Research shows that when home and school work together it makes a difference to children’s learning. As always we are aiming for 100% participation. See you there!

INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS

On the11th March we took a squad of 20 children to the Interschool Swimming Sports at Nayland Pool. They all did themselves and the school proud with their effort, attitude and behaviour. Well done guys! - Mr Barnett Sports Coordinator

Results: Callum - 2nd 9 year Backstroke - 2nd 9 year Breaststroke Sam - 2nd 10 year Freestyle

I enjoyed the freestyle but did get tired doing the big length at Nayland Pool - much longer than our pool. - Harley My favourite part was getting into the finals at breaststroke. It was funny when my goggles had a leak during the relay. - Ben

STUDENT DESKS We have a number of students desks available - free. See Margaret, the caretaker.

Tahunanui School News

For the gala all the year 3 and 4 students made gingerbread people to sell in the sweets

stall. ALL SOLD OUT. My favourite part was decorating them. We got one to take

home - they tasted delicious!

SOMETHING TO SMILE

ABOUT

Quasimodo bought a Ford Focus. It became known as the hatchback of Notre Dame. I’d tell you a chemistry joke but I know I wouldn’t get a reaction! People who take a lot of selfies are just trying to save face!

ROOM 1 HOCKEY SKILLS

Last week we had our first Hockey Skills lesson. We played some fun games to teach us the basics of hockey. We learnt to dribble the hockey ball with control, the Hockey - Haka position, played Creep up Jack hockey style and learnt how to hold our sticks with the correct hand placement. We look forward to our next lesson! IMPETIGO (School sores) The disease is spread by direct contact with discharge from infected skin. Early signs are scabby sores on the exposed parts of body. SWAN PLAN IN ROOM 13

We have a swan plant in our garden. It has some

monarch caterpillars on it. They keep disappearing.

We think the birds are eating them!

We have been using geoboards and rubber bands to make shapes.

For mathematics we are learning to sort shapes by their appearance. We sorted these shapes by colour, shape type

and the number of corners they have.
