December 1, 2015, marked the first class of the Small Busi-
ness Academy, an offering to local prospective and existing
business owners initiated by the Kern County Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce. The Hispanic Chamber, working
with the Business Education Foundation, in consortium with
Taft College, the Taft Union High School District, the Bakers-
field Chamber of Commerce and your Taft Chamber are
offering an eight-week course for people wishing to go into
business or folks interested in taking their business to the
next level. There is no cost for this valuable course, and
there still is time to enroll.
The course is presented in Spanish on Tuesday evenings at
Buena Vista Continuation High School, Room 2, from 6:30-
8:30 p.m. and in English on Wednesday evenings at the
Chamber Board Room, also from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Again,
there is no charge for the classes. Both classes were origi-
nally planned to be held at the Chamber, but the response
from the Hispanic community was so great that we needed
to move the classes offered in Spanish to a larger venue.
The classes will include the following important topics:
Week 1: Developing a Business Plan
Week 2: Legal Aspects of Running a Business
Week 3: Understanding & Preparing Financial Statements
Week 4: Business and Tax Issues
Week 5: Grants and Loans for Small Business
Week 6: Networking and Promoting Your Business
Week 7: Marketing 101
Week 8: Customer Service
The classes will meet each Tuesday or Wednesday from De-
cember 1 (or December 2) to February 9 (or 10). There will
be no classes during the Christmas holidays, December 21
through January 1.
Graduation for both classes is tentatively scheduled for
Tuesday, February 16, 2016. Those who successfully com-
plete the entire course will be given a one-year membership
to the Taft District Chamber of Commerce, courtesy of the
Taft Chamber Board of Directors.

Our annual Trout Fishing Derby took place on Saturday, November 21 at Buena Vista Lake Evans. This tourna-ment proved to be a success for another year, bringing out 639 fisherman, women, and children. A special thank you to Bob’s Bait Bucket and Cope’s Tackle and Rod for assisting with taking registrations for us. Several of the Chamber Board of Directors showed up at 4am Saturday to help with the opening of the tournament and stayed until the derby was over. Thank you to Orchel Krier, Glenn Black, Tony Cordova, Manny Campos, Jordan Miller, Carey Carpenter, Kathy Orrin, and Shannon Jones for spending their Saturday promoting another fun, Chamber event.
