Welcome noteWe warmly welcome you to the 2021 TAFE NSW ENGAGE conference, hosted virtually by North Region, this year’s conference theme is: “Innovate, Integrate, Inspire for Tomorrow.”

We would like to respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, and pay respect to Elders, both past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people joining us today.

Brought to you by our Organisational Development team, ENGAGE is the annual TAFE NSW conference, designed to provide educational teams with access to dynamic industry leaders, to discover insights and ideas in new technology, and to support the delivery of innovative and engaging future student experiences. This year we are pleased to provide delegates with a diverse program, packed with speakers and sessions that will provide you with inspiring and practical takeaways you can use in your teaching practice.

Our first keynote speaker on day 1, Amanda Gore, will address how a growth mindset can motivate and change culture, and finishing off the day with Kelly Freebody talking about how the small teaching moments can be drawn together to build transformative education. On day 2, we will be wrapping up the conference hearing from Rachael Robertson, exploring the future of teamwork. Our concurrent breakout sessions across both days will showcase examples of exemplary practice in TAFE NSW and is brought to you by many of your TAFE NSW colleagues.

Our panel session on day two, with a mix of internal and external panellists, will look at the opportunities that contemporary learning provides. A special thank you to our Managing Director, Steffen Faurby and our Chief Delivery Officer, Kirsty Hosea, for opening the conference on both days and their ongoing support of ENGAGE. Be sure to also drop past the Marketplace, where you can hear the latest in product innovations from across TAFE NSW. We urge you to visit the Marketplace for resources, new ideas, and networking opportunities.

We hope you are able to take an opportunity to virtually socialise and connect with colleagues, who are equally passionate about inspiring confidence, excellence, and creativity – but remember that not everyone can get to the conference. To that point, we would kindly ask that you share what you have learned over the two days with your teams and sections, so that more TAFE NSW educators can effectively ENGAGE.

Special thanks to Alicia Bales for her emcee role over the two days, and to Andrew Saunders and David Austin from the North region Aboriginal Engagement team for leading on the production of the beautiful Acknowledgement of Country Video.

Finally, we hope you enjoy the conference and walk away feeling inspired and engaged!

Session summariesKeynotes: How a Growth Mindset, Engages, Motivates and Changes CulturesAmanda Gore

In other words - this is how YOU and how you feel transforms the impact of your teaching! Have you ever been around someone who is an energy sucker?! If you have, then you know what impact a person’s mindset has on others! This session is about being an energy giver - and how to have energy to give.

Everyday Experiences and Little Changes: A Different Perspective on Big Ideas in EducationKelly Freebody

In this presentation Kelly considers the relationship between contemporary learning practices and pedagogy. Exploring how ‘big ideas’ in education can be understood in small teaching moments, Kelly makes the case for thoughtful and deliberate pedagogical practice. For education institutions to serve students and communities in multifaceted ways, educators need to consider the way their pedagogy connects not only with important policy or evidence-based initiatives, but also with students’ intellectual, social and practical lives.

The Future of TeamworkRachael Robertson

Imagine living in months of darkness, the temperature hovers around minus 35 degrees and you’re stuck inside with no escape from your workplace or staff … there’s no way in, and no way out.

Antarctic Expedition Leader, Rachael Robertson, will reveal how she kept her team inspired and productive through Antarctica’s long, dark winter. She explains why respect trumps harmony and how she built a culture of collaboration, integrity and trust with a very diverse group of complete strangers.

Using real life examples, Rachael shares her insights from a year on the ice - where she managed everything from a search-and-rescue following a plane crash, to resolving a peaceful settlement to the Bacon War.

Rachael RobertsonFormer Antarctic Expedition Leader, Author and keynote speaker

Rachael Robertson returned to Australia after 12 months in the Antarctic, where she successfully led the 58th Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition to Davis Station. She was only the second female to ever lead a team at the Station and one of the youngest ever leaders. This leadership role is a truly unique experience. Antarctica in winter is totally inaccessible which means once the last ship leaves at the end of February, no one can leave the base under any circumstance (not even if you are dying) until the ship returns in November. It’s a 24 hour a day, every day of the year, leadership role.

Rachael was responsible for all aspects of life on the Station, from the safety and welfare of over 120 expeditioners in Summer, to the delivery of the Australian Government’s $30mn science program. In any circumstance, this would be a tough role, but for a female in a male dominated environment, it was also a very challenging one!

Prior to this Rachael held senior operational management roles for 16 years in a range of complex and challenging environments and now works in the field of leadership development sharing her experiences. Since returning to Australia, Rachael has completed her MBA and written two best-selling books. The first, Leading on the Edge, is based on her year in Antarctica. In 2020 she released her second best-seller, Respect trumps Harmony which provides the tools to build resilient, high performing teams based on research and case studies collected over 15 years. She is an international keynote speaker and has presented at over 1,500 conferences around the world.
