TAD, has been one of change. While change

other organisations, business as usual is not

around us.

TAD is fortunate that we have a solid foundation of almost 40 years of service to the community, delivered through the partnership of our

which to build. Directors before me had the foresight to establish the TAD Foundation, the directors of which are committed to securing the

of our organisation.

From a personal perspective, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been elected as President during this time of enormous change. After 13 years involvement with TAD, I was honoured to have the members place their trust in me and I have done my utmost to justify it.

as President was a visit to Bangor Public School to present an award to Mitchel Olsen, and his brother Andy, who had participated in the 2013 Spring Cycle. Mitchel rode 15 kilometres on a Freedom Wheels bike and was the event’s highest individual fundraiser. Many children present could do things that Mitchel couldn’t but with the support of TAD and his family he had achieved more than the 7,000 or so other people

who had taken part in the event. TAD helps make those kind of things happen every day, and that will not change.

The retirement of Alan McGregor after just over 13 years, including nearly four as CEO, saddened

and his wife Sandra the very best and thank him for his service to the organisation. The role of

maintained stability and assisted in the search and appointment of a new CEO.

What has not changed in the last year is the community’s undeniable need for TAD, and the unique and valuable role we play. With change comes opportunity and the Board is working towards shaping a clear direction to best equip TAD to take up those opportunities and continue to serve.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

A Message from Our CEO

Danny Kapustin joined TAD as CEO in September 2014, bringing with him the wealth

most recently as General Manager with Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC) where he was responsible for overseeing 59 clubs

and volunteers.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the volunteers, donors, supporters and clients over the last 39 years that have made TAD the successful organisation it is today.

I’m excited to take up the role of CEO at this amazing time in TAD’s journey, and look forward to continuing our great work in the disability sector and our contribution in empowering those in the community through clever design, smart technology and a bit of hard work.

While I’m sure there will be challenges and changes ahead for TAD as the State and Federal Governments shift their funding models and increase our compliance requirements,

changing landscape and build itself into an even stronger organisation.

I’m especially privileged to be joining the organisation in time for its 40th year in 2015 and I look forward to celebrating that landmark occasion with you and working closely with many

lives of people with disabilities and their families.

Custom Designed Equipment

The Custom Designed Equipment (CDE) program continues its innovative development of unique,

and adults with a disability. Innovative thinking has created truly personalised solutions such as an adjustable table and lifter using an actuator arm, a harmonica holder for a talented musician with multiple sclerosis and equipment for the bathroom to give independence and privacy.

The CDE program encourages collaboration between volunteers which brings together unique skills and improved solutions. Our growing connection with Men’s Sheds is expanding capacity through a

community capacity in the process.

CDE has provided solutions into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Hunter Trial area and has seen TAD become more agile and responsive as new processes are developed to be able to provide for the needs of NDIS clients.

Looking into the future, CSIRO and industry leaders presented keynote addresses at the annual Volunteer Conference on 3D printing and CDE ended

the year with a 3D printer and training project through a grant from The Ian Potter Foundation.

The Transforming Lives with 3D Printing project will enable increased innovation and more opportunity for the client to participate in the solution-design process with low cost

prototypes. Plans are to create a 3D printer design library to

Australia. There are considerable possibilities in this iniative.

The future is indeed bright as CDE takes on board the latest technologies to create a new generation of solutions.

Freedom Wheels

The Freedom Wheels program is in its 7th year of supplying bikes to children with disabilities across NSW. Our bikes range in size from 12”, 16”, 20” and 24” and use quality, easily transportable stabilising systems designed by TAD engineering volunteers. Children who cannot walk can often ride a bike independently.

In 2013-14 bikes were supplied to clients accessing the NDIS in the Hunter and we continue to supply other states in Australia with parts for the stabilising assembly.

GIO Insurance entered their second year as our Platinum Partner and assists families

subsidising the assessment process and bikes. In 2014 it has assisted TAD to continue to streamline our processes and build capacity.

The generous support from Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs and other community groups in addition to the ClubGrants, continue to support many families in need. Their assistance lessened the loss of the Family Assistance Fund on families in need.

With the consolidation of systems this year, the future looks promising as Freedom Wheels gears up to increase

year. This will support an increased number of clients with the assistance of our local

groups, corporates, trusts and foundations to enable children

with disabilities to experience the wind in their hair as they

refurbished computer, the Computer Support Service (CSS) is an essential service that supports people with a disability, or who hold a Centrelink or DVA card. CSS provides access to digital opportunities for work, social connections and independence.

The computer equipment that is refurbished is donated from generous government departments, individuals, corporate and community organisations. CSS refurbish to the rigorous standards of Microsoft through the skills

of experienced technical volunteers. With a new hard

CSS provides work experience each week for Year 11-12 students, which assists TAD and the student, with mentoring from skilled volunteers with years of professional experience.

Donations are accepted by CSS from all sources, and what cannot be refurbished is used for repair components

or is recycled. The result is 100% use of a donation, either through refurbishment, reuse of components or recycling through the successful eWaste Program.

CSS continues to look for new and innovative ways to assist their clients to access the digital world and be independent.

The drink line system and drink bottle mount are very easy to use and mean that my client no longer has a large bottle of water sitting next to him on the mattress at night time and makes the Environmental Control Unit easier to access.

The mobile phone holder for the bed and the wheelchair are also working extremely well.

Bill, the volunteer was a pleasure to work with, he was very helpful and considerate and without him there is no way we would have been able to set up the ECU for my client. I can’t give him high enough praise.

Julianne Castle

year was Innovation and New Technologies and 3D printing was a key focus with displays and presentations from the CSIRO, 3D Studios and Breseight Australia.

Here’s a recap of what our volunteers have been up to this year:

Albury / Wodonga Branch

On the border with Victoria, this Branch is 30 years old having formed in 1984 and continues to work with the local clubs and now with the Men’s Shed.

As Aged Care facilities increase in the area, the Branch is undertaking more projects to support local residents. Projects have included

walker for a client who had reduced left arm and leg mobility with a special one-hand operated

wheelchair for a client who could not lift more than 2kg due to a back injury.

Branch coordinates the Freedom Wheels bike clients and personally checks the bikes and delivers them to the local clients.

Central Coast Branch

As the second largest Branch in NSW, TAD Central Coast has actively supported 99 clients with personalised projects by 26 active

members contributing around an estimated 1,313 hours.

The Branch meets regularly in Gosford and designs and develops a range of solutions for clients including bath equipment and access platforms. This Branch also builds the 12” Freedom Wheels bike for clients across NSW.

Central West Branch

This Branch services a vast area generally bounded by Bathurst, Orange, Parkes and Dubbo. The Branch has assisted 21 clients with a disability with 23 solutions.

One major project included modifying a school chair into a multiple-solution chair for a school student - designed for the student as well as the teacher to assist the student.

The Branch maintains close liaison with local therapists and special schools and assists with the Freedom Wheels Clinics that are held across their area.

Port Macquarie Group

A small proactive group of three, capably led by the Coordinator, John Brumby, assisted 16 clients with many and unique solutions. These included access platforms,

handle to assist with car transfers, hip protectors and repairs to loan equipment.

The Group organises clients for the Freedom Wheels Clinics and assists on the day.

The Group has established strong relationships with local therapists and is very proactive in garnering sponsorship from the local Lions Club for bike sponsorship. The CWA Clubs assist with specialised tools for project construction and the Group works with Men’s Shed.

John presented at the Volunteer Conference this year on building community relationships.

area, involved in the Freedom Wheels Clinics in conjunction with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance in Nowra.

Hunter Branch

The largest Branch outside of Sydney with volunteers contributing over 1,600 hours to develop and build solutions for 156 clients across a wide spectrum of need

chairs and bikes.

14 of these projects have assisted clients involved in the Hunter NDIS Trial.

The NDIS has meant new procedures for project completion with a Sydney based therapist undertaking the Freedom Wheels assessments for the bike clinics. The Branch works closely with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance at East Maitland and Croudace Bay and holds clinics at these venues.

Funding support has come from the Port Stephen Busy Bees, Donaldson Coal and Glencore Coal. In the coming year, TAD Hunter Branch is looking for new larger workshop facilities to accommodate the growing needs for their project work.

Illawarra Group

Illawarra Group are continuing to work with the Corrimal Men’s Shed to undertake projects. This arrangement is a model of cooperation for future TAD Groups and provides access to a wider range of tools and equipment and social interaction.

This Group has assisted 18 local clients this year with projects ranging from Freedom Wheels bike repairs

of a pre-wheelchair cart for a child, a sun canopy, access platforms, a change table and modifying a cot for a mother with a disability to attend to her baby.

Another member of this Group has assisted countless clients by commuting to Sydney each week to build refurbished computers for clients across NSW.

Northern Rivers Group

On the border with Queensland, this Group services Lismore, Ballina and surrounding areas.

The Group assists the visiting TAD Therapists with Freedom Wheels Clinics and clients when they visit clients in the Northern Rivers area.

Manning-Great Lakes Group

This Group of three members completed 10 diverse projects for clients. These projects have included the building of access platforms, a custom step to transfer to a car,

a repair to a bed lifter. The Group also provided assistance with some Sydney projects when particular expertise is needed.

Manning-Great Lakes local Coordinator Chris Scott is very active in the community promoting TAD services.

Group area have been undertaken

as the one volunteer in this Group takes a well-deserved break.

Sydney Volunteers

Sydney volunteers continue to provide an extensive service to people with a disability from the centre of Sydney to its outskirts.

In some areas of Sydney, where there are limited volunteers, our team has stepped up and put in an

of their areas to assist clients in need.

There are 113 volunteers operating

Sydney area. Collectively they have supplied CDE projects to clients, delivered hundreds of items through the volunteer courier team, refurbished computers for sale to clients, given thousands of hours of support to administration, fundraising, minor repairs, governance, photography, equipment, maintenance, supporting TAD at the Spring Cycle for Freedom Wheels and a plethora of other tasks.

Our Fundraising

It has been a busy year for the fundraising and marketing team

the very generous support for our cause.

This support comes from our small but dedicated group of donors, the generosity of our clients and families who share their stories, our Platinum Partner GIO Insurance, our volunteers, partner organisations and the Trusts and Foundations who keep our programs alive.

For the second year of our involvement, the Spring Cycle was again a brilliant event run by our valued partner Bicycle NSW. The event saw Mitchel Olsen, his dad Scott and brother, Andy, ride 15km over the Sydney Harbour Bridge

the top individual fundraiser, raising enough money to provide ten

with disabilities. Mitchel and the Olsens featured on Channel 7 News with thanks to reporter Damien Smith which boosted awareness of Mitchel’s brilliant

program. Sweeney Advertising arranged the production and secured spots for radio community service announcements about

Baulkham Hills ran the BBQ and Parramatta High School students painted nearly every child’s face

was presented the Charity Partner Award at the Annual Bicycle NSW Volunteer Dinner for the second year in a row and we look forward

to continuing this important relationship to create an inclusive environment for all cyclists.

Bicycle NSW also held the Gear Up Girl event in March and the Four Fit Ladies, led by Sally Wallace, travelled from Central West NSW to Sydney, to raise funds for TAD and celebrate women’s cycling.

We continued to work with our valued Platinum Partner, GIO Insurance, who not only provide a three-year commitment to sponsoring the Freedom Wheels program but also give pro-bono support with a variety of marketing projects, new brochures, advice and support.

In February we launched the

professional, innovative brand and create a new online presence that was accessible and easy to navigate for all users, as well as being client and disability friendly. Thanks to assistance from GIO Insurance in preparing the brand brief, the new site has seen nearly 30% more visitors than the previous year.

Our appeals and online campaigns have also had increased success this year. A special mention to Amanda Maxwell and her delightful foster daughter Elizabeth who featured in our Christmas Appeal, highlighting the custom equipment our volunteers design and build to help children grow and develop. The Winter Appeal was one of our biggest ever, raising $55,000. This campaign featured the wonderful Amanda, Sean and Madeline

Ferguson and highlighted the important custom equipment our volunteers make for parents with disabilities so they can be the capable, independent parents they know they can be. Our appeals database is made of a group of small and loyal donors who are both generous and truly appreciated.

We were extremely excited to receive funding from The Ian Potter Foundation for our new, innovative, project: Transforming Lives with 3D Printing. Rehabilitation Engineer, Nick Asha, and our volunteers will be exploring the value that 3D printing can bring to TAD projects. The other Trusts and Foundations without whom we couldn’t continue to change the lives of people with disabilities included Raymond E Purves Foundation, John T Reid Charitable Trust, Perpetual Trustees / The Baxter Charitable Foundation, Fairbridge Foundation, James N Kirby Foundation, Cecilia Kilkeary Foundation and Clubs NSW.

Finally there are three special thank yous:

Our TAD photographers who give their time to take beautiful images of our clients, volunteers and the clever ideas they bring to life – Ray Allen, Bob Cook and Elvis Sinosic from Elvis Sinosic Photography.

Our volunteer journalist Paul Taylor who captures the client stories and the impact of our volunteers for our TAD Journal.

The GIO Insurance team for their expertise, time and commitment.
