20th Annual Fantasy Lights now open in Pierce County's Spanaway Park

Every night through New Year's Day, visitors can treat themselves to a festive holiday display of lights unlike any other in the South Sound area. This year is the 20th anniversary of Pierce County Parks and Recreation's Fantasy Lights at Spanaway Park and the department has added even more displays to enhance the experience.

"I feel like every night I come to work, there's a new display that affects me for different reasons," said Recreation Supervisor Jennifer Spane, who manages the annual event. "It might be because there's fog in the park or it's an extra-crisp night or the rain is hitting the lights a certain way, but there's always something new to take away."

The largest holiday drive-through display in the Paci� c Northwest features over 300 elabo-rate displays and thousands of sparkling lights. The beautiful two-mile drive along Spanaway Lake has become a memorable lakeside tradi-tion for families all over Western Washington.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy a magical world of animation and imagination where bears � y kites, Santa and Rudolf sail a tall ship, snow boys kick � eld goals, penguins slide down an igloo, and reindeer leap over cars. The county added more LED lighting throughout the park this year, along with several new displays fami-lies are sure to enjoy.

"For the past several years, with the help of the county's Public Works and Utilities depart-ment, we've been replacing old lighting technol-ogy with new LED lights one display at a time," said Spane. "It's a signi� cant cost up front but the long-term savings make it absolutely worth-while."

Spane noted there are several discount nights in honor of Fantasy Lights' 20th anniversary this year, when carloads of visitors can get in for half price. Those upcoming evenings are Dec. 9 and 10, and entry is only $7 (busses are not discounted). Revelers can purchase $11 tickets from the Lakewood Community Center, located at 9112 Lakewood Dr. SW, in Lakewood, or at the Sprinker Recreation Center, located at 14824 C St. S., in Tacoma. A number of $3-off coupons can be found at retailers throughout Pierce County and online at piercecountywa.org/parks.

Spanaway Park is $14 per vehicle and mini-bus (up to 14 passengers) and $45 for each bus with 25 or more passenger capacity, and is charged per vehicle at the gate. More information is available online at piercecountywa.org/fantasylights.

Applicants sought for Surface Water Management Advisory Board

Pierce County is seeking applicants to � ll vacancies on the nine-member Surface Water Management Advisory Board.

Advisory board members will be involved in such issues as storm drainage and surface wa-ter management, water quality storm drainage plans, rate structures, capital improvement projects, � nancing, and annual program goals for the Surface Water Management division of Pierce County Public Works and Utilities.

The mission of Surface Water Management is to be a responsive service organization that ef� ciently addresses � ood control, water qual-

ity, and the preservation of natural drainage systems.

Meetings are held monthly. Advisory board members will be selected to represent each of the watersheds and preference will be given to candidates living in unincorporated Pierce County. These positions are uncompensated.

To ensure broad diversity of experience and opinion on the board when � lling vacancies, consideration is given to those candidates that can best supplement the knowledge and per-spectives of the current board members. All applications received will be placed on a roster for consideration when vacancies occur.

A donut shop with a long history in the South Sound could soon offer its sweet treats in down-town Tacoma.

The Original House of Donuts is expected to open at 766 St. Helens Ave., a prime store-front located near the intersections of South 9th Street, St. Helens Avenue, and Broadway. The space was previously occupied by the Downtown Vision Center.

According to information available on the City of Tacoma's Web site, a construction permit was issued on Sept. 30. The company has also creat-ed a Facebook page speci� cally for the downtown Tacoma location. Over the past few weeks, sev-eral downtown Tacoma stakeholders have asked this reporter if he knows about the donut shop opening on the corner.

The Tacoma Daily Index contacted Original House of Donuts owner Tom Peterson on Mon-day to inquire about the size of the new store, the opening date, the hours of operation, and reasons for opening a new location in downtown Tacoma. "We are doing construction in Tacoma, yes, but we aren't ready to make an announce-ment just yet," Peterson told the Index. He said more information about the new store would be available after the holidays. Meanwhile, visitors

to the area will notice the windows have been papered over and construction is under way.

The Original House of Donuts, which is locat-ed at 9638 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, was opened in 1959 by husband-and-wife owners Bob and Marilyn Cheatham, who ran the business for 50 years, according to the company's Web site. The business (including the secret recipes for donuts) was eventually sold to Peterson, who re-opened it in January of last year after some renovations.

A pre-bid meeting will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street, Room 708. The purpose of the pre-bid meeting is to answer questions about this solicitation and any special or technical requirements, as well as the City’s HUB and LEAP goals.

Project Scope: The project will provide an asphalt overlay from S. 66th St. to S. 56th St. and from S. 47th St to S. 43rd St. ADA ramps, sidewalk, curb and gutter and illumination will be provided where necessary. The project will also improve two sections of the Water Ditch Trail. It will improve the traffic signal at S. 58th St. by up- grading pedestrian access. The second section of the Water Ditch Trail will be improved by constructing the Trail from South Tacoma Way to the new Sounder Station.
