Joint action between the Police and DVLA is taking place to tackle misrepresented number plates and crack down on those who sell them.

It is an offence to display a non-compliant number plate. This can be dealt with by a fixed penalty.

• Whereactionistaken,youshouldalsosendanoffencereporttoDVLAforfollow-upaction,usingtheagreedproforma.DVLAwilltakeactionwhenyourreportsarereceived,assetoutoverthepage.

• Thereportneedstobeaccompaniedbyaphotographoftheplate–incaseofdisputewiththekeeper.Theregistrationnumberitselfmustalsobeclearlyrecordedasitshouldbeproperlydisplayed.

• Itisvital,whereavailable,thattheoffencereportalsoincludesinformationontheoutletthatsuppliedthenumberplate.DVLAusesthisinformationtotargetenforcementactionagainstsupplierswhobreakthelaw,tacklingtheproblematsource.
