Maximum Choice
Maximum Opportunity Thank you for looking through this year’s Thousand Islands
Secondary School Course Calendar. It will help you plan
your journey at TISS. A student focused staff with a wide
variety of qualifications and the outstanding TISS facility
provides for engaging individualized programming for
students. We offer a complete array of educational programs
that includes academic, enriched, applied, locally developed,
technical and advanced placement courses.
TISS university bound students routinely receive bursaries and
scholarships and are successful in competitive programs. TISS
is known in the community for the complete technical program
that is offered including aesthetics, construction, design,
hospitality, auto, and manufacturing/welding. Students who
excel in these areas often start to earn apprenticeship hours
during cooperative education job experiences set up through
the TISS coop department. NEW to TISS is our exciting
TISS-Braves international hockey academy. Students earn
credits while improving their hockey skills. The program
supports our young athletes with a personalized academic and
training schedule.
TISS offers three grade 11 and 12 Specialist High Skills
Majors (SHSM) programs where students can earn a
specialized “red seal” diploma in a specific area. The SHSM’s
that we offer include: arts and culture, manufacturing and
health and wellness. These programs ensure students get
experience in those fields and industry certificates. TISS also
offers an integrated Math-Science- Technology (MST)
program in grade 9 where students are challenged with projects
that bridge across their Math, Science, Tech, and computer
classes.
In the arts TISS offers dance, music (band, guitar, and history
of rock and roll), Visual Art and Photography as well as
drama. A robust business and law program rounds out course
offerings at TISS.
Our extra-curricular program fields very competitive teams in
all sports including football, soccer, basketball, volleyball,
rugby, cross-country, badminton, hockey and track and
field. art club and art battle events, school band, OSAID,
HELP, Equity club, student theatre, student coffee house
evenings, student council and intermural events are popular
with many students at TISS.
I am very proud to be the principal of TISS. Our caring staff,
the opportunities and choice available to our students and the
TISS spirit our students show make our school a great place to
learn and pursue your educational goals.

Introduction
Education at the secondary level is directed toward
developing students as concerned and responsible
citizens, as well as preparing students for entry into the
work force or post-secondary education. This booklet
outlines diploma requirements for students wishing to
obtain a secondary school diploma, a secondary school
certificate or a certificate of accomplishment.
Students and parents should study this booklet carefully.
Course selections should reflect the needs, interests,
abilities and goals of the student. While advice and
information are available from secondary school
counsellors, the final decision on course selection rests
with the student and parents/guardians.
It is a policy in Ontario education that individual
differences be accommodated to the greatest extent
possible. Within the limits of the financial and human
resources available in a school, each student should be
able to follow a program suited to his/her individual
needs and aspirations. As a school, we are committed to
providing appropriate pathways for all learners. It is for
this reason that TISS offers four programs to Grade 9&10
students: Academic, Applied, Essentials and Open level.
In Grades 11&12, students can follow one of three
destination pathways: University, College or Workplace.
This scope of program offerings should enable all
students to be successful.
A list of the courses offered in the school, together with
course outlines and assessment and evaluation practices,
is available in the school office for parents/guardians
and students to examine.

The Upper Canada District School Board, through its secondary school program is committed to
equip all students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need for successful outcomes and
smooth transitions to the post-secondary destinations of their choice. Our schools offer
educational programs that promote high standards, while providing students with learning
opportunities and supports needed for success.
Successful completion of secondary education in Ontario is important and a valuable step toward
post-secondary opportunities. Students may create or choose a program pathway that prepares
them for direct entry into:

� College
� Community Living
� University
� The Workplace
There is value, honour and dignity in all post-secondary destinations and all sectors of
employment. A student’s Program Pathway is his or her educational program and reflects the
goals that help motivate him or her to complete secondary school. Building a successful pathway
through school requires planning and is a cooperative effort involving students,
parents/guardians, teachers and guidance counselors. Factors that must be considered in
planning include a student’s:
� most recent levels of achievement
� preferred learning style
� strengths, interests and abilities
� immediate educational needs
Early success in high school is essential. Statistics in Ontario show very clearly that failure in
courses in grades 9 and 10 is a significant factor in students dropping out of school. Appropriate
course selection and proactive plans for success are important.
Schools in Upper Canada have a strong focus on Student Success. In each of our high schools,
Classroom Teachers, Student Success Teachers, Guidance Counsellors, Learning Resource
Coaches and Administrators form strong teams that are dedicated to successful outcomes for all
students. For our students making the transition from grade 8 to grade 9, there has never been
greater attention paid to their strengths and needs, while focusing on opportunities for success.

Diploma Requirements
An ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA (OSSD) will be granted to a student who earns a
minimum of 30 credits of 110 hours each, passes the Ontario Secondary Literacy Test, and
completes the Community Involvement Activities.

As an initial goal students may wish to celebrate earning Ontario Secondary School Certificate
(OSSC) prior to deciding to continue earning credits towards an OSSD or transitioning to the
community and the world of work.
The Guidance and Career Education Program
Creating Pathways to Success is founded on a vision in which all students leave secondary school
with a clear plan for their initial post-secondary destination, whether in apprenticeship training,
college, community living, university, or the workplace, and with confidence in their ability to
implement, and revise or adapt, their plan throughout their lives as they and the world around
them change. This vision sees students as the architects of their lives.
The goals of the Guidance and education Program are outlined in the policy document “Creating
Pathways to Success 2013.”
A CERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT will be granted to a student who leaves school before fulfilling the
requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the Ontario Secondary School Certificate. The
Certificate of Accomplishment is a way of recognizing achievement of students who plan to take other kinds of
further training or who plan to find employment after school.
An Ontario Student Transcript will be attached to indicate which credits have been earned. A Certificate of
Accomplishment will be issued only once. Whether receiving a certificate of accomplishment, an Ontario
Secondary School Certificate, or an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, all graduates will walk across the stage
with their graduation class at the TISS commencement ceremony in June.

The Ontario Student Transcript
In all Ontario secondary schools as of September, 1999, the Ontario Student Transcript contains:
� a student’s record of courses successfully completed in Grades 9 and 10
� all attempts at courses in Grade 11 or 12 including those courses from which the student
withdraws after five days from the issue of the first Ontario Report Card of the semester
This transcript is the official document that a person must present whenever evidence of secondary
education standing is required for employment purposes or for admission to a post-secondary
program.
Ontario Student Record
Every Ontario school keeps an official record for each student. The OSR contains achievement results,
credits earned and diploma requirements completed, and other information important to the
education of the student. Students and their parents (if the student is not an adult) may examine the
contents of the OSR. These records are protected by the Education Act and the Freedom of
Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Substitutions for Compulsory Credits
In order to allow flexibility in designing a student’s program and to ensure that students can qualify
for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, substitutions may be made for a limited number of
compulsory credits. These courses must be selected from the course offerings of the school that meet
the requirements for compulsory credits. To meet individual student needs, the principal may
replace up to three of these courses (or the equivalent in half courses) with courses that meet the
compulsory credit requirements. Each substitution will be noted on the student’s Ontario Student
Transcript.
Courses Offered
� All the courses offered by Thousand Islands have been developed according to the
requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education. Detailed courses of study are available at
the main office of the school and parents who wish to examine them may present their
request to the Principal.
� Courses are available through means other than regular day school. More information about
these methods of delivery is available by contacting the school’s Guidance Department.
Attendance Expectations
There is a direct correlation between attendance and student achievement. You will be informed of
any absence through our web-based communication tool – myfamilyroom.ca In the event that a
student has been absent from classes or arrives late to school, the student will report to the Office
before school begins on the day following an absence or upon entry to the school to obtain an admit-
to-class slip. Attendance procedures and policies will be outlined for students in their home form
class. These procedures and policies will be on file in the main office.

Course Changes During The Year
Changes to a student’s timetable will be made only under exceptional circumstances after the
semester begins. A student may change courses with the advice of the counsellor and
consultation of the parent.
If the student (including a student with a completed IEP) withdraws from a grade 11 or 12 course
within five instructional days following the issue of the first provincial report card in the
semester, the withdrawal is not recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript (OST). If the student
withdraws after those five instructional days, the withdrawal is recorded and the student’s
percentage grade at the time of withdrawal is recorded on the OST.
Enhanced Programming and Material Fees
Enhanced Programming and Materials are voluntary enrichment or upgrades to the curriculum
beyond what is necessary to meet the learning expectations for a particular course. For example,
in some performance and production courses, students may wish to use a superior product or
consumable than that provided by the school, in which case they will be asked to pay the
additional cost for the upgrade. Where students choose not to access these enhancements,
alternatives will be available. (UCDSB Policy 452)
Reporting Student Achievement
Student achievement will be communicated formally to students and parents by means of the
Provincial Report Card, Grades 9 – 12. The report card provides a record of the student’s
achievement of the curriculum expectations in every course, at particular points in the school
year or semester, in the form of a percentage grade. It also includes teachers’ comments on the
student’s strengths and the areas in which improvement is needed, along with the ways in which
this improvement might be achieved. The report card contains separate sections for recording
attendance and for evaluating the student’s learning skills in each course.
A final grade is recorded for each course, and the credit is granted and recorded for every course
in which the student’s grade is 50% or higher, except for The Ontario Secondary School Literacy
Course (OLC). In order to earn a credit and successfully meet the literacy requirements for
graduation, students must “moderately” or “adequately” demonstrate their learning in each of
the categories of the achievement chart for the OLC. This equates to the attainment of a level 2
in other courses. The final grade for each course will be determined as follows:
� Seventy percent of the grade will be based on evaluation conducted throughout the
course.
� Thirty per cent of the grade will be based on a final evaluation in the form of an
examination, performance, essay, and/or other method of evaluation suitable to the
course content.

In all of their courses, students must be provided with numerous and varied opportunities to
demonstrate the full extent of their achievement of the curriculum expectations across all four
categories of knowledge and skills. Evaluation should reflect each student’s most consistent level of
achievement. The four categories of achievement include:
� Application
� Communication
� Knowledge and Understanding
� Thinking and Inquiry
Summative evaluations are administered toward the end of every semester. In the case of a student
absence because of illness (evidenced by a medical certificate) or bereavement, the Principal will
determine what actions will be taken.
Ministry report cards are issued twice per semester. However, each student should constantly
monitor his/her own performance and seek evaluative feedback and positive advice from his/her
teachers.

Honour Roll
The names of honour students will be posted and offered for publication after each final provincial
report card is issued. Students are reminded that the following criteria apply to Honour Bars:
Grade 9, 10, 11 – An average of 80% or higher on 8 courses taken during 2017-2018
Grade 12 – An average of 80% or higher on the best 6 courses taken during 2017-2018
Ontario Scholar A student may be designated an Ontario Scholar if he or she obtains an aggregate of at least 480 marks
in any combination of six grade 12 ministry-approved courses: U, M, C, O.
Student Services: Guidance and Career Education The Guidance and Career Education Program is a vital and integral part of the secondary school
program. Through the program, students will acquire the knowledge and skills that they need in
order to learn effectively, to live and work cooperatively and productively with a wide range of
people, to set and pursue education and career goals, and to carry out their social responsibilities.
The program will be delivered through various means including classroom instruction, orientation
and exit programs, completion of the individual pathways plan, career exploration activities, and
individual assistance and short-term counselling.
PLAR – Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition
Students enrolled in Ontario secondary schools may have their knowledge and skills evaluated against the
expectations outlined in provincial policy documents in order to earn credits towards the secondary school
diploma. The formal evaluation and accreditation process is known as Prior Learning Assessment and
Recognition (PLAR).

The goals of the Guidance and Career Education Program are outlined in the policy document
entitled Choices Into Action: Guidance and Career Education Program Policy for Elementary and
Secondary Schools, 1999.
To achieve these goals, counsellors:
� assist with communication between students, teachers and parents
� in the fall, interview each student new to the school as well as all graduating students
� counsel students with academic difficulties after each reporting period
� actively respond to students’ needs, as they arise
� plan Career Week activities, Take Your Kid To Work and other job shadow opportunities
� offer students school-to-work transition programs such as work preparation seminars
� liaise with colleges, universities, community services and other professional agencies
� organize and host visits from colleges and universities
� provide scholarship information
� coordinate small-group counselling sessions

TISS Learning Centre (TLC)
Built with a team approach, the TISS Learning Centre is dedicated to student learning. This can
take many forms such as; assisting students, with current classroom assignments, offering
accommodations for test writing, providing a place for catch up work or simply providing students
with a quiet place for work and study. Adaptive technology and computers as well as books and
magazines are available to all students throughout the day before school, after school and during
lunch. As much as possible student success teachers in the TLC are available to work one on one
with students who seek assistance to improve their academic achievement.
Individual Pathways Plan (IPP)
The IPP is the primary planning tool for students as they move through high school towards their
post-secondary destination. Ongoing development of the IPP will provide students with a
valuable archive of their learning and a record of the resources that can assist them in planning.
Students will have a web-based IPP and a clearly delineated process in place establishing their
plan; this will be reviewed and revised twice a year.
The online tool used to complete the IPP at Thousand Islands S.S. is called myBlueprint. A variety
of resources exist within this website including, High School Planner used to complete course
selection annually.

Student Services: Special Education
Services Provided To Our Identified Students
All students require support from family, friends, classmates and teachers in order to thrive during their
school experience. Many students have special needs that require additional supports in order to reach
their true potential and fully benefit from their educational experience.
School staff including our administrators, classroom teachers, student success teachers, learning resource
teachers, guidance counsellors and our child & youth worker track student success at school and
determine when additional supports and/or interventions may be required.
All students have learning strengths, needs and interests that should be considered when choosing
program goals with appropriate levels of challenge and when deciding if additional supports are
necessary through an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Students who have been identified through the Identification Placement & Review Committee (IPRC)
process must have an IEP, but students who have not been formally identified can also appropriately be
placed in an IEP program. Academic & informal assessments/data collection, exploration of the student’s
Ontario Student Records (OSR) as well as discussion of concerns with the student, their teachers & family
can be used as a basis for a new IEP.
Available supports outlined in the IEP can include:
• Accessible Environment, Tools & Resources
• Accommodations (no change to overall curricular expectations)
Accommodations can be instructional, environmental &/or provided during assessment
• Assistive Technology
• Flexible evaluation & assessment methods
• Modifications (change to number &/or complexity of overall curricular expectations)

TISS PROGRAMS GRADE 9 INTEGRATED STUDIES
GRADE 9 ACADEMIC INTEGRATED MATH, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY STUDIES PROGRAM (MST)
Courses studied: Business Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Integrated Technology
In the twenty-first century, Canada will require citizens with a strong education background in Math, Science and
Technology. In response to universities, colleges and the business sector, TISS is proud to offer a program designed
to meet the future needs of our students. The Integrated Math, Science, Technology studies program offers an
interdisciplinary approach to learning, designed to incorporate the major components of Science, Mathematics,
Computers and Technological Education. All learning outcomes from each discipline will be achieved in their
entirety and it is proposed that this program will be the first in a series of courses for students preparing for
university or college-related fields of study such as: Health Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Science,
Architecture, Mathematics, and Technological Education.
Students will understand and apply scientific theory by designing and building projects using specialized
equipment and techniques. Computer applications and Internet resources will be used for research, data analysis
and the presentation of solutions to practical everyday problems. Sample topics to be studies include: building
telescopes and kaleidoscopes, food testing and classifying; hydroponics, materials testing theory which will be
applied to model bridge building or platform house framing; theories of force relating to the manufacture of rockets
or airplanes. This program is intended for highly motivated students of both genders with excellent achievement
in grade seven and eight in the area of mathematics and science.

THE TISS HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE (HPA) CO-OP PROGRAMME
The TISS HPA programme is a specialized Co-operative Education opportunity available to students
in grades 9-12. The purpose of the HPA programme is to give exceptional student-athletes the
opportunity to reach maximum academic potential while actively pursuing athletic training for higher-
level athletics. The programme is offered as either a one or two credit package. Athletes are considered
as “High Performance” if they compete intensively in a sport at the Provincial or National Level. The
student must be training a minimum of 10 hours per week in a one credit Co-op course, and a minimum
of 20 hours in a two credit course. There is an application process that students must complete in order
for the Co-operative Education department to verify their training schedule and to ensure that their
sport, level of sport and training hours will qualify them for the programme. Each application must be
accompanied by a letter from the student’s coach to verify the athlete’s level of competition, the name of
the sport’s governing body, and the level of coach certification. Each individual sport has its own
standards in determining the level at which the students are competing.
As students involved in the HPA programme require the time in their schedule to train, study and
compete, the HPA course-work is available to students on-line via D2L (Desire to Learn). Students have
access to their course materials from anywhere in the world where they may be training and have the
ability to submit work using drop-boxes in the course site. Regular meetings are held between the
student, their HPA monitoring Co-op teacher and the student-athlete’s coach. Assessment and evaluation
of the student’s progress and achievement is completed through independent assignments, coach
evaluations and logs documenting training and competition hours.

TISS PROGRAMS BILINGUAL AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
The courses in this program will focus on developing the social, cultural and political awareness students will
need to function effectively in the international community, both as professionals and private citizens. This
program will also develop the communication skills students will require to participate in international dialogue.
This interdisciplinary course of study will develop students’ ability to communicate effectively in French and
Spanish, and allow them to explore such diverse topics as geography, economics, politics, social customs and
world issues. The students will be given an opportunity for practical experience in an international
humanitarian relief setting. The courses offered in the international studies program prepare this students for
a future in communications within a global context.

TRIPLE PLAY/DUAL CREDITS
Students can apply to enroll in college courses or apprenticeship training, earning dual credits that count
towards their OSSD and college diploma or apprenticeship certification. For example, a student interested in
applying to the Police Foundations Program following graduation may opt to take one of the required courses

students learn alongside their college peers. A Dual Credit student typically travels to the college once or twice
a week for his or her two to three hour course. Transportation to the course is the responsibility of the student.
Many other college programs offer courses through this initiative.
The dual credit program is available through St. Lawrence College – Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall campuses
and Algonquin College – Ottawa. Students who desire learning opportunities outside of high school and who
would benefit from a college or apprenticeship experience are suitable candidates. To ease scheduling, many
students take their dual credit course in conjunction with the high school co-operative education course. This
is an excellent opportunity for students to transition to post-secondary education while still in high school. For

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM (AP)
What is Advanced Placement?
• AP is a program of enrichment for motivated students, which offers students the opportunity to take
university-level studies while still in secondary school. Students should have completed the course
appropriate 4U course previously or be enrolled in it during the school year.
• The program culminates in a standardized exam set by College Board of the U.S. which is written in May
• Successful candidates will receive advanced placement in their chosen course of study and may receive
a university credit at many universities in Canada and the U.S.A.
• Exams are written in May, there is a fee for each exam that is written
• Students receive exam results in July
The Advanced Placement program allows students to gain university/college level study skills. AP helps
students to gain academic confidence and greater preparation for college or university. With an AP in courses
students improve their profile for scholarship applications and have an opportunity to save money on tuition if
university credit is received in the chosen course.
AP courses that have been offered at TISS are: Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Literature

ON-LINE LEARNING PROGRAM OVERVIEW

LINK CREW PROGRAM
LINK CREW is a leadership course for senior students with the primary goal of developing peer-mentoring sills to assist grade
nine students with a successful transition to high school. Leaders are selected through an application and interview process and
begin the course in June. After training, they are partnered with another leader and together they are assigned eight to ten grade
nine “Crew Members” for the year. Link leaders are instrumental in running the Grade 9 orientation activities in August.
Link Crew is fundamentally about making connections. The bond between Leaders and Crew is important and fosters feelings of
respect and comfort that are necessary for success in high school. Both sides involved gain experience, confidence, and
knowledge while building friendships. Classes focus on developing each student’s unique leadership abilities, as well as
overcoming learning challenges through communication awareness and teamwork skills.

SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM)
SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJORS – TWO SECTORS OFFERED AT TISS
A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) was introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2006 as part of the provincial
Student Success Strategy designed to “reach every student”. The SHSM enables students to customize their high
school experience to suite their interests and talents while preparing them for a successful post-secondary transition
into apprenticeship training, college, university or direct entry into employment.
Components of every SHSM:
• A package of required credits including 4 “major” credits from courses that provide knowledge and skills
closely related to the sector of specialization; 2-4 other required Ontario Curriculum credits particular to the
SHSM’s economic sector; 2 cooperative education credits
• Compulsory certifications in a particular sector which are identified in each SHSM framework
• Experiential learning that could include job shadowing, job twinning, and work experience
• Use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) to document the demonstration of essential skills and work habits
• “Reach Ahead” opportunities to allow students to experience learning in their intended post-secondary
destination, which can range from a day of attendance at a college, a university, or a workplace to completion
of a dual credit, and/or Level I Apprenticeship in-school training.

Cooperative Education Course
The Co-op Program is available to students in Grades 11 and 12, and is related to a course (or
courses) from an Ontario curriculum policy document or a Ministry approved locally developed
course. The student must be concurrently enrolled in the related course or have successfully
completed it. Cooperative Education courses include a classroom component and a placement
component.
Placements provide students with opportunities to apply and extend the knowledge, and practice
and refine the skills, acquired in the related course, and to demonstrate the achievement of
placement expectations that reflect current workplace practices and standards.
The student’s individual Cooperative Education program will be designed following a placement
interview. Some students will be eligible to begin an apprenticeship program through a
Cooperative Education placement in a skilled trades setting. Some students will select Cooperative
Education placements which prepares them for the school-to-work transition
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)
Is a combination of cooperative Education and apprenticeship that allows students to learn a
skilled trade while at the same time, completing the requirements of an Ontario Secondary
School Diploma. Students are eligible if they have completed 16 credits and are 16 years of
age or older. Further information on OYAP is available from Student Services Counsellors
and Cooperative Education teachers.

Types of Courses - Explanation of Common Course Codes Grade 9& 10
Students in Grades 9 and 10 will choose courses from one or more of the following types:
Academic (D) In these courses, the essential concepts of a subject are learned and related material
is explored. Although the knowledge and skills in the subject will be developed through both theory
and practical application, the focus will be on theory and abstract thinking as a basis for future
learning and problem solving.
Applied (P) These courses also cover the essential concepts of a subject. Knowledge and skills will
be developed through both theoretical and practical applications, but the focus will be on the practical
applications. In applied courses, familiar, real-life situations will be used to illustrate ideas, and more
opportunities will be given to experience hands-on applications of the concepts studied.
Essentials (L) The Essentials courses are designed for students who may experience considerable
difficulty in the grade nine/ten program. Students enrolled in the Essentials Program have the
opportunity to move on to Applied, Open or Workplace courses. Admission to this program is a
collaborative effort involving communication between elementary and high school teachers, special
education personnel, and parents/guardians.
Open (O) An open course is neither academic nor applied, rather it is a course with one set of
expectations for all students. Open courses are designed to provide students with a broad educational
base that will prepare them for studies in grades 11 and 12.
Grade 11 & 12 Students in Grades 11 and 12 should choose the courses offered to prepare them for their post-secondary destinations:
University Preparation (U) These courses are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet
the entrance requirements for university programs.
University/College preparation (M) These courses are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet
the entrance requirements for specific programs offered at universities and colleges.
College preparation (C) These courses are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet
the requirements for entrance to most college programs or for admission to apprenticeship or
other training programs.
Workplace preparation (E) These courses are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to meet

Transfer Course
A course offered to students in Grades 9 and 10 who wish to move to another type of course

Taken in grade 11 and Grade 12, Co-operative Education provides students with the opportunity to earn 2 or 4 credits
per semester while gaining valuable workplace experience with our local business, social service and educational
partners. Co-operative Education is designed for all students, whether their pathway is leading them to college, an
apprenticeship, directly into the workforce or to university. There is a wide range of work placement opportunities
including: elementary schools, hospitals, dentists’ offices, electrical companies, lawyers’ offices, accountants’ offices;
machinists; veterinarian clinics; hotels and restaurants. The Co-operative Education Department at TISS makes every
effort to match students career interests with their potential work placement and the chance to learn “on the job”
while earning credits at the same time. In 2 credit Co-op, students spend half the school day at the work placement.
Four credit Co-op involves the full school day. Co-operative education credits can count towards two of the
compulsory 18 credits necessary to earn an OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma)
In Pre-placement and Integration classroom activities, students learn valuable skills and knowledge such as; how to
write a cover letter and resume; awareness of Health and Safety practices; interviewing and job searching skills; and

economic, and environmental challenges facing developing
countries in the new millennium, and examines the role of
Canadians – as members of the industrialized world – in aiding
those countries in surmounting these challenges. Students will
examine the root causes of social political, economic, and
environmental challenges (such as illiteracy, poverty,
international trade, war, and new technologies) in developing
countries and analyze the impact of history on current situations.
Special attention will be paid to the topics of basic education,
child protection, HIV / AIDS, the environmental footprint,
governance, and health. The impact of globalization will be
addressed specifically. Case studies related to current
international aid and development projects – as well as the
institution delivering this aid – will explore both the benefits and
drawbacks of outside involvement. Students will study the
bureaucratic models of international aid agencies and apply this
knowledge to the establishment of their own aid project.
This class is delivered in French. This course allows for a
fifteen day placement at the Romero Centre in Nicaragua where
the students will have the opportunity to contribute to a
developing community and to put in practice the theory they
have studied.

systems, factors and principles involved in human
development. Students will learn about the effects of

course prepares students for university programs in
physical education and health, kinesiology, healthy sciences,
healthy studies, recreation, and sports administration.

This course enables students to explore the benefits of
lifelong participation in active recreation and healthy leisure
and to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed
to plan, organize, and safely implement recreational events
and other activities related to healthy, active living. Students
will also learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active
living to others through mentoring and assisting them in
making informed decisions that enhance their well-being.
The course will prepare students for university programs in
physical education and health and kinesiology and for
college and university programs in recreation and leisure
management, fitness and health promotion, and fitness

Course, History – Grade 10 This course focuses on the connections between student and
key people, events and themes in Canadian contemporary
studies. Students prepare for Grade 11 Canadian and World
Studies. Workplace Preparation courses through the
development and extension of historical literacy skills and
critical thinking skills. Students explore a variety of topics
highlighting individuals and events that have contributed to
