  • Overview

This document contains full Vendometric RBVND-Lite modem description and gives information about installation and using it.

RBVND-Lite terminal is a special modem adopted to work with vending machines. Based on reliable GSM/LTE module it is an irreplaceable platform for telemetric applications in vending sector. It is dedicated for all producers and servicemen that need remote access and centralized information about vending machines.

Equipped with standard communication interfaces like Executive and MDB it is compatible with most of machines available on market. Additionally, serial interface allows downloading audit EVA-DTS from vending machine controllers (VMC) or coin collectors. Audits have full information about state of the machine, status of sold products, amount of money and errors that occurred during usage.

Thanks to built-in motion sensor you are able to react in case machine is knocked in order to prevent any damage. There is a free environment for developers willing to program modem by their own or with support of ELPROMA company.

  • 2.2 External connections

    2.2.1 Interfaces and connectors

    2.2.1.1 GSM/LTE antenna connector

SMA connector placed on back panel of device is used to connect external GSM/LTE antenna for RBVND-Lite 4G and 2G/LPWA antenna for RBVND-Lite NB. To establish a connection with the network an external antenna must be used. Type of antenna depends on GSM/LTE coverage. In good circumstances (level of received signal is high) use antenna which is attached in the package. If range of network signal is low or none, an outdoor directional/omnidirectional or indoor (for instance in place where signal range is sufficient) antenna should be used.

Note: If there is no antenna connected to SMA connector, the connection with network is impossible.

    2.2.1.2 Cables

Below is the two cables which is necessary to connect the modem with vending machine.

Use the appropriate cable depending on machine communication protocol.

    1. Cable for machine with MDB protocol and RS232 DEX(DDCMP) connection to EVA-DTS

    2. Cable for machine with DEX protocol on Jack to EVA-DTS

    APN:;;;

    4.2.3 Communication protocols

    4.2.3.1 Executive/Protocol-A

RBVND-Lite supports EXE, which is communication standard for vending machines and the coin acceptors. The "Executive" protocol (also known as "Exe" or "Protocol-A") was developed as a proprietary standard by Mars (MEI) for communications with payment systems (coin-mechanisms, etc) in vending machines.

    4.2.3.2 MDB

RBVND-Lite supports also MDB, which is another communication standard for vending machines and the coin acceptors. Multi Drop Bus or MDB standard was issued by NAMA and EVA, originally developed by CoinCo Inc. USA. MDB protocol is a real time interface that various peripherals use for communicating with the vending machine controller (VMC).

RBVND-Lite can operate in MDB sniffer mode. This is non intrusive MDB connection where RBVND-Lite only listens to MDB master (VMC). This can be used to detect if VMC has enabled coin acceptance and if cashless is enabled. This is hint to understand that VM is able to sell products or pending in error state. This mode also supports real-time Cashless purchases.

    4.2.3.3 EVA-DTS

The aim of the EVA DTS is to provide a standard format for data which is required by operators of vending machines. The standard defines the structure of common data elements and describes the means of the transfer of the data. RBVND-Lite is compatible with Vending machines through RS 232 (eg. DB9 and Audio Jack). It supports DEX and DDCMP communication protocol.

  • 7 Troubleshooting

7.1 No communication with the modem

If there is no communication with the modem do the following steps:

    • Check all external connections of the modem

    • Verify if power supply is correct

    • Check if TCP/IP parameters are correct

    • Check if any firewall is not blocking connection with the modem

7.2 Modem answers but there is no internet connection

If there is no internet connection do following:

    • Check if antenna is connected properly

    • Check if you have reception of GSM/LTE signal in your area (on website of network provider)

    • Check if you configured your modem with proper parameters provided by your network provider (they should match in order to connect to internet)

  • 8 Technical characteristics

    8.1 Mechanical characteristic

    Max. dimensions 72 x 53.5 x 26 mm (w/o connectors) 83 x 53.5 x 26 mm (w/ connectors)

Weight ≈ 89 g (only modem w/o any external connection)

    Volume 100 cm2 (w/o connectors)

    8.2 Housing (dimension diagram)

  • 8.3 Electrical characteristic

    8.3.1 Power supply

    • Nominal voltage range: 18V..45V DC , 20V..30V AC

    • Maximum continuous (average, depends on supply voltage) supply current: +800 mA max

    • Peak (momentary) supply current: 2 A

  • 8.3.2 RF characteristics

    8.3.2.1 Frequency ranges

    RBVND-Lite 4G variant:

  • RBVND-Lite NB variant:

  • 8.3.2.2 External antenna

The external antenna is connected to the modem via SMA connector.

Antenna must have parameters as shown below in table.

Antenna frequency GSM/LTE/LPWA supported frequencies as described in Basic features and services

    Impedance 50 Ω

    DC impedance 0 Ω

    Gain 0 dBi w/o cable; 2dBi w/ cable

    VSWR (with cable) -10 dB

The antenna chosen for working with modem should best fit to circumstances of environment it is used in. When the modem is placed in a room or somewhere where the range of networks signal is too low, the outdoor or specific indoor antenna should be used to increase it.

  • 8.4 Environmental characteristic

  • 9 Safety recommendations

    9.1 General Safety

Please follow safety regulations regarding the use of radio equipment due to the possibility of radio frequency interference. Read given advices carefully.

    Switch off terminal when:

    • in an aircraft – using cellular telephones in aircraft may endanger the operation of the aircraft; it is illegal

    • at a refueling point

    • in any area with potentially explosive atmosphere which could cause an explosion or fire

    • in hospitals and any other places where medical equipment is in use

Respect restrictions on the use of radio equipment in any area or place where it is signalized that using cellular telephony is forbidden or dangerous.

Using GSM/LTE modem close to other electronic equipment may also cause interference if the equipment is inadequately protected. It may lead to damage or failure of GSM/LTE modem or the other equipment.

  • 9.2 Care and Maintenance

The RBVND-Lite terminal is a electronic product that should be treated with care. Please follow suggestions shown below due to using modem for many years.

    • Do not expose terminal to any extreme circumstances like high temperature or high humidity

    • Do not keep modem in dirty and dust places

    • Do not disassemble the modem

    • Do not expose the modem to any water, rain or steam

    • Do not drop, shake or knocking your modem

    • Do not place your modem close to magnetic devices – credit cards, etc

    • Use of third party equipment or accessories, not made or authorized by Elproma Elektronika may invalid the warranty of modem and/or cause failure or permanent damage of modem

    • Do not expose the modem to children under 3 years

    9.3 Responsibility

The modem is under your responsibility. Please treat it with care, and respect local regulations. This is not a toy – keep it out of the reach of children.

Try to use security features (PIN etc.) to block unauthorized use or theft.
