Part II Keynote Speeches
Keynote Speech 1 Crop plants and food security: how do we go?
Keynote Speaker: Prof. Moniruzzaman Khondker
Dhaka University, Bangladesh
Time: 08:35-09:15, June27th, Wednesday Location: Crystal Hall, 2ndfloor, Building A
Biography: Moniruzzaman Khondker obtained M.Sc. in Botany with First Class
from the University of Dhaka in 1972 where he joined as Lecturer in 1975. He
was appointed Professor on 27 March 1995 and later on obtained Selection Grade Professor of the University of Dhaka. In 1988, he obtained a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from
the ‘Economic Commission for the European Communities’ (erstwhile EEC), Brussels, Belgium to vi s-
it 12 famous Limnological Institutes belonging to different EEC countries. During his service in the
Dhaka University, he also worked as Consultant of many international projects on aquatic ecosys-
tems carried out in Bangladesh. He is now the Director of Centre for Advanced Studies and Research
in Biological Sciences in the University of Dhaka. He produced so far four Ph.Ds., guided 34 M.Sc.
theses, published 102 research publications and wrote two text books.
Abstract: Crop plants are one of the vital components of our agricultural system which directly su p-
ply our food along with other essential commodities needed for the sustenance of our life. They do
have a tremendous commercial and economic role in our society. There may be 350,000 species
of plants in the world of which nearly 80,000 are edible. At present 150 species are actively culti-
vated and of these, 30 species produce 95% of human calories and proteins. About one half of the
food for us is derived from four crop plants, namely rice (Oryza sativa L.), maize (Zea mays L.),
wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) which are fully of terrestrial origin.
Most marine food is still largely harvested from the sea, but this technology is now changing. Crop
plants have direct relation with the food security. By food security we mean having physical, social
and economic access by all people on this globe and at all times to sufficient, safe and nutritious
food to meet the dietary needs of our productive healthy life. Throughout the whole world, there
should be a long-term development strategy to help countries feed their own people. Currently global food security is jeopardized by the sequences of climate change events thought to be occur-
ring on the surface of the earth. Other threatening factors against food security are the
non-homogeneous distribution of the crop plants on earth, scarcity of irrigation water, rate of new
crop plant species introduction, shrinking of cultivable agricultural lands, etc. Of all these bars, sea
level rise and a shift in global temperature and agricultural pattern on the earth due to climate change have been considered as most serious. In the recent time, the discovery or creation of new
crops is also a rare and unusual event. Food safety could be aligned to the food security and the
quality deterioration of the former imposes strong pressure on the latter. Current thoughts of scien-
tists, biologists and agriculturalists to address the above mentioned problems related to food secu-
rity and availability of crop plants have been elaborated in this talk. Mitigating the greenhouse gas
CO2 from the atmosphere by using functional ‘oceanic afforestation ecosystem’ is a recent scientific

back up. The current trend of research in the crop plants has also been highlighted.
Keynote Speech 2 Lipids and lipases for lipids modification
Keynote Speaker: Prof. Francesco Secundo
Istituto di Chimicadel Riconoscimento Molecolare, Italy Time: 09:15-09:55, June 27th, Wednesday
Location: Crystal Hall, 2ndfloor, Building A
Biography: Dr. Francesco Secundo, male, biochemist, graduated (Laurea in
Biological Sciences) at the University of Milano, Italy in 1992. He has con-ducted research activity at the Institute of Chemistry of Molecular Recogni-
tion, CNR, in Milan, since 1986. His research activity is documented by more
than 100 articles in international journals (H-index 27, Scopus). His research work has dealt with the
preparation and use of enzymes in organic synthesis and for other biotechnological purposes, ana-
lyzing the role of enzyme formulation on enzyme conformation and activity. He also carried out
analysis of proteins, lipids or antibiotics in food by different analytical techniques.
Abstract: Fatty acids (FA) composition in lipids and phospholipids has been widely studied, because
of the potential impact on human health. In particular, the discussion at the meeting of the Federa-
tion of European Nutrition Societies in Berlin, October 2015, led to the conclusion that diet guide-
lines should continue to recommend limiting dietary saturated fatty acid (SAFA), but at the same
time emphasize the importance of replacing SAFA with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to reduce
cardiovascular disease risk. SAFA consumption is regarded as an important risk factor for cardiovas-
cular diseases (CVD), due to their association with increased blood cholesterol. Furthermore, re-
placement of trans-fatty acids with PUFA has the most favorable effect on reducing low-density lip-
oprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and therefore the CVD risk.
Many different strategies have been adopted, with the aim to prepare lipids enriched in beneficial
PUFA.
On one side, there is more attention to the animal feeding to improve fat quality in the food ob-
tained from them (e.g., eggs, milk, farmed fish, etc.). Alternatively, modification of lipids by enric h-ing them with PUFA is a very common procedure. In particular, the use of enzymatic methods for
this latter purpose is a very natural-like approach that has been explored for numerous lipids and
natural compounds interesting for the food industry. Among the various enzymes, lipases are the
most established biocatalysts used for the synthesis of structured triacylglycerols, fats, and marga-
rine and for the release of flavoring fatty acids for food applications. In the presentation that will be held at ABS2018 and ABB 2018, both aspects will be reported and
discussed. It will be reported an example of how a different feeding of cows (grazing at different al-
titude of the Alpine region or fed with a diet usually adopted in cowshed) affects the fat content and
fat composition of cow milk. Furthermore, examples of lipids modifications by lipases and the
strategies adopted to improve this methodology will also be presented.

Keynote Speech 3 Embryonic consequences of abnormal folate transport during development
Keynote Speaker: Prof. Richard H. Finnell
Baylor College of Medicine, USA Time: 10:20-11:00, June27th, Wednesday
Location: Crystal Hall, 2ndfloor, Building A
Biography: Dr. Richard H. Finnell is a Professor in the Center for Precision En-
vironmental Health in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He is also a
Changjiang Scholar Professor at Fudan University, an Adjunct Professor in the
Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics of Jiaotong University, and in the In-
stitute for Reproductive and Child Health at Peking University. A pediatric geneticist, he has been
involved in investigating genetic susceptibility to environmentally induced birth defects, applying stem cell technology to the detection of potential teratogenic compounds in efforts to prevent the-
se birth defects, developing mouse models to understand the pathogenesis of the defects, and us-
ing highly innovative approaches to treating these disabilities. Professor Finnell has authored over
350 publications in journals such as Science, Nature Genetics, Nature Cell Biology, PNAS and Devel-
opmental Cell.
Abstract: The presentation will cover two disorders linked to the human folate receptor alpha pro-
tein. The first portion of the presentation will focus on the role of preconceptional folic acid sup-
plementation in reducing the occurrence of complex congenital defects in humans. Specifically, we
will focus on the role of folic acid in the prevention of neural tube defects. To better understand the
mechanisms underlying theses beneficial effects, we developed a variety of genetically modified
mice whose folate transport systems have been ablated. Administration of exogenous one-carbon
sources partially rescues the nullizygous embryos; although they present with a low prevalence of
malformations involving the neural tube, craniofacies, heart, eyes and abdominal wall. Inadequate
maternal folate causes notable changes in the Folr1 mutant embryos at the molecular and cellular
levels, clearly indicating the importance of folate homeostasis during early mammal ian develop-
ment. The second part of the talk will focus on the cerebral folate deficiency (CFD) syndrome, which
is characterized by very low concentration of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) in cerebrospinal
fluid, while folate levels in plasma and red blood cells are normal. CFD patients present with symp-
toms including: developmental delay, ataxia, dyskinesias, spasticity, speech difficulties and epilepsy. Previously, mutations in several folate pathway genes, including hFRa (folate receptor alpha), DHFR
(dihydrofolate reductase), PCFT (proton coupled folate transporter) and MTHFS (methenyltetrahy-
drofolatesynthetase) have been identified in CFD patients. In an effort to identify causal mutations
for CFD, we performed whole exome sequencing analysis of DNA samples collected from CFD pa-
tients, developed mouse models to test hypotheses which was published in the April 2017 issue of Nature Genetics.

West Lake (Xihu)
"Sunny water waves its glow, Misty rain tricks the hill. Plainly or gaily decked out like Xi Zi, West
Lake is always alluring." These are the words composed by the famous Song Dynasty poet Su
Dongpo (960-1127) to depict the charm of the West Lake.
Measuring 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) in length, 1.7 miles (2.8 kilometers) in width, and 7.5 feet
(2.3 meters) in average depth, the lake spreads itself in an area totaling 2.5 square miles (6.5 square
kilometers). Embraced by mountains on three sides, the West Lake knits itself into the North Inner
Lake, the Yuehu Lake, the West Inner Lake, the South Lake and the West Outer Lake by the fabric of
the Bai Causeway, the Su Causeway and the Yang Causeway. Between the North Inner Lake and the
West Outer Lake lies the largest natural island called the Solitary Hill. In addition, three man-made
islands stand in the West Outer Lake: the Lesser Paradise Island, the Mid-lake Pavilion, and the Ru-

angong Islet; and two famous pagodas by the lake: the Leifeng Pagoda to the south and the Baochu Pagoda to the north. Nowadays, West Lake is one of the top ten scenic areas in China, getting listed
as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2011. It is famous for the romantic legends and i n-

There are many beautiful landscapes in the lake area, and the following are the most famous
Top Ten Scenes.
You will find Temple of Soul's Retreat (Lingyin Temple) in a long, narrow valley between Peak
Flown From Afar (Fei Lai Feng) and North Peak to the northwest of the West. It is without doubt a
premier showpiece in the West Lake environs and is notable also as one of the ten most famous
Buddhist temples of China. In 1961 it was listed for protection as a key provincial historical and cul-
tural site and is considered a leading centre for research relative to Chinese Buddhist culture.
