Develop the concept of 1

• • TM Counting Quantity Posters• TM TouchPoints with Pictures (TPPs)• Classroom or space objects• Crayons or markers• Construction paper• Finger paints

• Model counting 1.“I have 1 head, 1 nose, 1 mouth”(point to each). Say, “Can you point to your head, nose, and mouth?” Say, “1 head, 1 nose, 1 mouth.”

Point to the poster, and say, “Look at this poster. It shows 1 planet and 1 astronaut. This astronaut’s name is Scout.”

• Read the poem below.

Our Friend ScoutScout is our friendwho knows many things,About trips into spacewithout any wings.About spaceships and stars,and playing on Mars,About Saturn with ringsand other fun things.Space is the place we’re going to see.We’ll travel with Scout,and where will we be?

• Have children play I Spy, and point out single objects throughout the day.

Module 1 CountingActivity Mats 1-3

REMEDIATION

Provide physical activities for the number. Have children hop 1 time, stomp their foot 1 time, etc.

Ask children to point out or hand you one of a variety of classroom objects. “Will you hand me 1 pencil, 1 paper clip, 1 TPP?” etc.

REMEDIATION

Refer to EMERGING REMEDIATION.

Ask children to finger point to a single object, then place a TPP on top of it. Repeat until finger pointing is no longer needed.

CHALLENGE

Provide construction paper and finger paints. Ask children to make 1 fingerprint in blue, 1 in yellow, etc.

Teach EMERGING activities as needed.

Ask children to place matching TPPs directly on top of the corresponding pictures.

Have them place 1 astronaut TPP on top of Scout, the astronaut, and say, “1 astronaut.”

Have them place 1 spaceship TPP on top of the spaceship and say, “1 spaceship.”

Repeat with TPP placement until children show proficiency with one-to-one correspondence and matching.

Teach DEVELOPING activities. Change directions to the following:

Ask children to pick any picture on the Activity Mat, name the picture, and place 1 TPP on the picture as they say, “I am placing 1_______ on 1_______.” They might say, “I am placing 1 star on 1 star.”

Provide 1 TPP per child at the table. Ask children to finger point to single objects on the Activity Mats, then place 1 TPP on the object.

Show me Scout, the astronaut. Say, “1 astronaut.” Have children place 1 TPP on the astronaut, then remove it.

Repeat finger pointing, naming, and placing/removing TPPs on pictures on Activity Mats 1-3 until children demonstrate proficiency with the quantity of 1. Count the TPPs as they remove them. Include Scout’s name whenever possible.
