Directory of Alternative Provision

Pre 16 Providers

Section A

The London Borough of Hounslow has created an Approved Directory of Alternative

Providers offering pre and post 16 education and training to young people living in

the Borough.

The main purpose of the Directory is to provide Hounslow Schools with

comprehensive information about the range of alternative provision available for

their students. The Directory will also support Schools seeking to deliver impartial

IAG by providing up to date information about the range of opportunities for

students to progress into Post 16 learning or employment with training.

The Directory contains only those providers that have been subject to an Ofsted

Inspection or have successfully completed the Boroughs own Quality Assurance

process. The QA process covers the following nine key themes.

1) Safeguarding 2) Health and safety 3) Achievement and Standards 4) Teaching and Learning 5) Admissions, Guidance and Support 6) Learner Entitlement 7) Leadership and Management 8) Professional Development 9) Employer Engagement

Further details of the Quality Assurance Framework and Process are available on

request.

This Directory is a working document and will be updated on a regular basis to

reflect changes in local provision. The next update will be circulated in January

Green Corridor Key Objectives/Mission Statement

Green Corridor’s primary aim is to reduce social exclusion and improve the education opportunities in some of the poorest areas of West London. Our mission is to improve the access of 14-25 year olds to employment, education and training through practical land-based learning. Providing accredited training through an informal yet structured programme, we engage young people with activities that are achievable and that encourage a high degree of self-motivation. Our programmes reward participation with tangible outcomes such as a qualification, a visibly improved local environment or the highly visible outcome of growing plants and vegetables.Green Corridor’s ambition is to be recognised as an organisation that uses its environmental knowledge and skills to address the everyday challenges faced by young people. Teamwork, communication, timekeeping and dressing appropriately are a few of the skills and qualities needed for land based work and that also relate to the wider workforce. The Inclusion Trust - Notschool and SchoolXtra Mission Statement and Key Objectives

The Inclusion Trust is a charity, which exists to advance learning opportunities for people that are excluded or disengaged from traditional education systems. Using innovative pedagogical approaches we aim to engage some of the most disaffected and marginalised young people in society. Notschool; offers a uniquely different provision for young people who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to engage with traditional school or other complementary provisions such as home tutoring or specialist units. Students in Notschool are provided with Mac technology, an e-Portfolio and a virtual community space for all to participate in and share learning. Qualified teachers engage with the young people, using a personalised approach. Learning gains and progression are carefully monitored enabling our young people to gain point-carrying qualifications recognised on the national framework including GCSEs. Notschool is viewed as a ‘stepping stone’, providing skills and qualifications to make a successful and sustainable transition to further education, training and adult life. SchoolXtra; offers a new short-term provision aimed at supporting those at risk of exclusion back to school. This provision uses the pedagogical methods and systems described for Notschool, focusing on re-engagement, learning skill development and progression particularly in English and Maths.

The PPP provides fulltime alternative education for yr.11, yr. 10 & yr. 9 pupils. We also have a post 16- provision and an E-learning Outreach programme. We operate a child centred holistic approach in an attempt to move away from the kind of mainstream provision that our students have not succeeded in. We are currently undergoing RSA ‘Opening Minds’ accreditation, which we hope to complete by the end of academic year 12/13. The pupils are divided into groups of 15 led by a key worker (Group and Family worker) with input from a designated teacher and mentor. These groups also double as the teaching groups for the majority of the academic curriculum. Family work is the cornerstone of our interventions building alliances that help to sustain the individual behavioural improvements that allow our student to access the opportunities available to them. The school operates on three sites, St. George’s in Brentford (45 places), The Vale in Acton (15 places) and Freston rd. on the Notting Hill/Kensington borders (30 places).

TLG West London: The Education Charity Key Objectives/Mission Statement

The Lighthouse Group (TLG) is a Christian charity that works with young people who have been excluded from school, at risk of exclusion or are at crisis point in their education. Our vision is to help teenagers that are growing up in

some of the toughest circumstances. By combining education with personal development we address behavioural difficulties and the issues that have put a young person in crisis. Our purpose is work with those who are missing out not only on an education but more often than not a childhood.

Site Manager Hannah Rowland Type of Provision

The Light House Group (TLG) St Pauls Centre Macbeth Street Hammersmith London W6 9JJ Tel: 02033 930 969 Mob: 07715 294 702 www.tlg.org.uk

We believe that young people are unique, gifted and able to achieve. As the media portrays ‘the youth of today’ as a failing, angry and feared generation, we take a stand that all young people need to know that they are loved and valued individuals. The teenagers we work with have often suffered and are victims of circumstances far beyond their control. We see time and time again that when young people are given love and recognition and a glimpse of what it’s like to achieve, their behaviour reflects this and that transformation is possible.

To achieve this we run a 2-day 12 week programme where young people are able to work for accredited qualifications in order to raise their academic confidence and self esteem and re-integrate into either school or college successfully. We place a large emphasis on relationship and have a 1:3 staff: pupil ratio which allows us to support young people effectively both academically and emotionally. We are able to run a 4 day programme on request.
