11TH EDITION OF THE
FIRST NATIONS EDUCATION COUNCIL INTER-SCHOOL GAMES
First Nations Education Council 1
1. Context Each year, the First Nations Education Council (FNEC) Inter-school Games bring together hundreds of youth aged 10 to 18, including some forty teams from various communities throughout Quebec. Nearly 180 competitions are scheduled among the three disciplines featured: floor hockey, volleyball and basketball. As for track and field, 400 additional athletes usually participate in this discipline. For five consecutive days, competitors, students, parents, volunteers and school staff members from all over the province rally in a single location to take part in this event that also includes an awareness and social component. Recreational activities (opening ceremony, medal presentation ceremony, mini powwow, etc.) are organized to give participants and their chaperones the opportunity to socialize with members from other communities. Awareness activities promoting healthy lifestyle habits are set up by FNEC education service staff members who also provide information on education and career guidance, and science and technology to participants. Schools take advantage of the enthusiasm this friendly competition generates to introduce incentives related to different aspects of life at school, including attendance, student conduct, and academic performance. This not only structures the students’ participation in the Games, but also motivates them to remain committed to their studies. As such, this year-end gathering becomes a reward for the students as well as a concrete measure to promote perseverance in school.

2. 11th edition of the FNEC Inter-school Games From May 9 to 13, 2018, 621 people, including 502 participants and 119 chaperones from 16 communities and 22 schools, took part in the FNEC Inter-school Games at Laval University’s Pavillon de l’Éducation physique et des sports (PEPS), in Quebec City. For a fifth year in a row, we have been fortunate to be able to count on the services provided by Laval University whose proximity makes it easier for the FNEC to manage the event prior to and during the Games. We go back to the Laval University PEPS year after year for various reasons but the main one being the quality welcome and excellent collaboration we get in the organization of these Games. Over the years, we have had to meet growing needs in terms of sports facilities, accommodations and meals, and the university facilities cater to this 5-day event perfectly.
3. Survey Each year, we send out a survey to member communities to determine the dates of the event. This year, the three following dates were proposed and the period from May 9 to 13, 2018, was chosen by the majority of schools.
Following the general assembly held February 16, 2017, we raised the possibility of shortening the Games, so that they could be held from Thursday to Sunday (Thursday being registration day), but most respondents had no objection with the event lasting 5 days (Wednesday being registration day). After this round table, we decided to hold the Inter-school Games over 5 days, from Wednesday to Sunday, and to keep the time slots reserved for the track and field events and team sports. We specified, however, that if a community preferred shortening its stay, its participants could register on Thursday or Friday morning. They would therefore not take part in the track and field events. Some schools have already been doing this for several years.

9. Guest athlete This is the second year that the FNEC invites a young First Nations model athlete to share their young sporting career with the participants of the Inter-school Games. Alexann Petiquay, a 21-year-old athlete, is an Atikamekw from Wemotaci and a Montagnais from Mashteuiatsh. She is an excellent ambassador for the FNEC Inter-school Games because she participated in 6 of their editions. She participated in all track and field events, floor hockey and volleyball, which allowed her to discover her passion for sports. Her numerous participations also brought her to meet young people from other communities. Her interest in sports and her determination namely allowed her to distinguish herself as a First Nations swimmer. Her speciality is long-distance open water swimming. Her biggest dream is to be the first Aboriginal to complete the Traversée internationale du lac Saint-Jean. The waves and cold water make this swimming competition very demanding. She would also like to compete in the Open Water Swimming World Cup.
