What is the HDSA’s National Youth Alliance?
The HDSA’s National Youth Alliance (NYA), is a program for children, teens and young adults
ages 9-29. The inspiration behind the NYA sprouted in 2000, at the 15th Annual HDSA National
Convention in Orlando, FL. Young people who had attended previous conventions knew it was
necessary to have a place for them to discover support in one another while growing up with
Huntington’s disease in their own families. The following year in 2001, the National Youth
Alliance was born. Children, teens and young adults began to attend convention with the sole
purpose of meeting other young people who were just like them.
In 2003, the NYA held our very first silent auction in Houston, TX. This was the same year in
which the NYA Scholarship Fund began. Members voted to have funds distributed to establish
the scholarship fund with support from HDSA. The first scholarship awarded was $3,000.00 for
the HDSA’s National Convention in 2004. The NYA Scholarship Fund is for members who
otherwise would be financially unable to attend NYA Day and the National Convention.
The NYA talent show has blossomed into one of the biggest events during convention weekend.
The first was held in 2004 in St. Louis, MO and has continued to grow, so much that the NYA has
had to expand from small conference rooms to the amazing attendance we had at the
Jacksonville, FL convention where rooms had to be opened up even larger to fit nearly 300
supporters. The talent show is comprised of musicians, singers, songwriters, leg wrestlers, and
even comedians!
The first official NYA Day was held in 2007, and each year members have returned to be
surrounded by their peers to feel support, gain knowledge, and create lifelong friendships.
Today the National Youth Alliance has more than 300 members nationwide and is growing
monthly. The support members have from family and friends has helped what once was a small
group of kids, flourish into amazing young adults, who are now able to share their experiences
with new members.
The mission of the NYA has remained unchanged; we are dedicated to making ours the last
generation with Huntington’s disease. The founding members approached HDSA with the
suggestion to begin an organization centered on the youth of HDSA. Children, teens and young
adults who were impacted by Huntington’s disease that would attend the National Conventions
prior to beginning the NYA, understood the importance of having an educational program and
activities set aside for the youth of HDSA. Founding members wanted to start a youth group
which would promote support, awareness and education for all young people, ages 9-29. From
that point on the HDSA’s National Youth Alliance has developed into something greater than
anyone ever expected.

Joining the NYA
Joining the National Youth Alliance is fast and
easy! Visit www.hdsa.org/nya to join, or refer
friends and family members so they can get in on
the action. Be a part of the nation’s largest youth
organization for Huntington’s disease.
Joining the National Youth Alliance provides
members the opportunity to apply for the NYA Scholarship, receive updates on programs the
NYA offers via e-mail and social media, as well as receive exclusive information and the
quarterly We Are the NYA newsletter. Becoming a member also helps board members keep
track of how many youths we are able to reach with support, along with what regions of the
nation you are in. Not only do we provide these services for our members, but we maintain our
core values in support, education, and friendship.
How does the NYA work?
The NYA was originally advised by Jean Miller and Dave & Susie Hodgson, along with the
Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Today the NYA is run by volunteer members who are
dedicated to making the HDSA’s National Youth Alliance known nationally through HDSA’s
Chapters and Affiliates, while providing support, education and friendship to young people in
the United States who are impacted by Huntington’s disease.
The NYA Board has had many exciting and new
accomplishments since the convention in Jacksonville,
FL. During 2013, they worked to re-establish the NYA
Board with motivated young adults who are
determined to see the alliance strive for greatness.
Their goal has been to buckle down and organize their
thoughts and put them into action. Board members
have built a plan of action for the next three years to
help us grow as an organization and provide the best
possible support for all young people impacted by
Huntington’s disease in the United States.
Much like HDSA’s Chapters and Affiliates, the NYA board has positions for a Chairman/woman
and Co-Chair. We also have a Fundraising Committee, Youth Services & Recruitment
Committee, Advocacy Committee, NYA Convention Committee, and the Communication
Committee.

Oversee maintenance of NYA mailing lists. Activities Coordinator Major Duties and Responsibilities
Find group activity for Thursday night of NYA day
Will want to find something that is…
Affordable
Call places and see if they will give a special discount for the HDSA – the Louisville
Science Center gave us cheaper tickets
Accessible for individuals who are disabled (wheelchair, JHD, etc.)
Within close proximity to hotel
Want to do something outside? Have a back-up plan ready in case it rains!
How to find ideas…
Call convention hotel they often have a list of fun things to do near by
Look online
KY 2014 – Had to go through comparing prices of multiple places (dinner, boat
ride, museums, etc). The NYA did not have the money to pay for the activity so
Morgan and I raised the extra cash. It was about $500 total.
Coordinate transportation to and from event
Find a bus/van that could transport kids
Check with churches – they will often provide this service at low cost or free
7
KY 2014 – We made the mistake of assuming that the kids could just walk to our
event since it was 1 mile away but it rained and we ended up using an expensive
bus service. NOTE FOR FUTURE: get transportation even if event is close!
Create and collect permission slips for individuals under 18 yo
Make sure you have kids names, contact info and parents signature
KY 2014 – Also used permission slips as an order form for our Subway meal (This
worked very well)
Chaperones
Allow for parents to come if they want!
Coordinate getting food if pertinent
Is the activity going to be at night? Will the kids have time to eat before the event or
will they need to eat there?
Find something…
Easy (can you throw it away? Is it clean? Will they deliver?)
Cheap (places will often discount food for charities)
Think about food allergies
KY 2014 – We used Subway, they gave us box lunches for $4.75 each – included
sandwich, drink, cookie and chips all in a self-contained box – very portable and
easy to clean up. They also allowed us to order salads for people with allergies. We
kept it simple by only offering 4 types of sandwiches and not offering extra
toppings. We ordered a lot of extra box lunches because people signed up for
event last minute. It is better to have too much food than not enough, NYA
members just took leftovers.
Past events that have been successful – baseball game, science museum, volunteering
at a food shelter, pool party at convention hotel
Oversee payment for event
You will most likely need to pay for the event using an HDSA credit card
KY 2014 – Kept in close contact with Mynelly and had her call in the credit card number
to pay for food and event.
Have schedule ready
Plan out what time you are going to leave for event > be at the event > eat food > leave
event > and be back at the convention
There will be parents who will want to know exactly what times the kids are doing
things
Advertise
Tell people about event on Facebook
Advertise in NYA newsletter
Remind, remind, and remind the kids at NYA day what time they are leaving for
event!!!

How to get Involved
Faces of NYA- The Faces of NYA campaign is the simplest way to get involved. By sharing your
HD story, poetry or art, you have the ability to inspire other children, teens and young adults to
share their stories also. For many, learning that they are not alone, that there are other youths
impacted by HD/JHD, and hearing from NYA members each month helps to promote a support,
momentum, and engagement with the youth community of HDSA. You can also participate by
recruiting individuals to become a Face of NYA, share the stories once posted on the 1st of each
month via social media, and use #FacesofNYA.
We Are the NYA- A quarterly newsletter where the NYA showcases
fundraising events, advocacy efforts, awards, contests and
campaigns and information that is both helpful and useful to
children, teens and young adults. Newsletters are distributed during
the months of January (Winter), April (Spring), July (Summer), and
October (Fall). Participating in the newsletter is as simple as
submitting a story, poem, event, or update from your efforts as a
fundraiser, advocate, NYA member, etc… You can also help with
gathering new stories from different members of the NYA and
helping to get them submitted with a picture to the
Committees- Many hands make for light work. Committees welcome NYA members to be a
part of the planning process. Finding a position that works best for you is key. Are you into
social media, or would you like to have a part creating content for our website, helping to
promote fundraisers, or do you like to be a voice of the people? There is a position for everyone
in each committee and we invite you to participate in our monthly conference calls throughout
the year.
Become a Youth Representative- Working in collaboration with HDYO, NYA members are able
to go through a training process to become local representative for the two youth organizations
12
in their communities. Youth Representatives help to share the missions of NYA & HDYO, while
providing materials and spreading support and friendship through our common bond with
Huntington’s disease. Representatives are invited to attend local Support Groups, Affiliates and
Chapters, as well as education events and fairs in order to recruit young people in becoming
involved with NYA & HDYO. (See NYA & HDYO Collaboration on Pg. 13)
NYA Scholarship Fund
Each year during HDSA’s National Convention, the NYA spends much of our time raising money
through our Silent Auction, Raffle and Talent Show. Funds raised through these events go
directly into the NYA Scholarship Fund for the following year. The fund is in place to help
otherwise financially unable youth’s to attend NYA Day and Convention.
Full scholarships are available to first year attendees, which may also be applied for by any NYA
member who did not receive a scholarship the previous year. Full scholarships cover travel
expenses such as your plane ticket, registration fees, hotel accommodations for four nights
(Wednesday night-Saturday night), and meals provided by HDSA during NYA day and the
following days of convention as applicable.
Partial scholarships are any combination of travel expenses, registration fees, hotel
accommodations and/or meals. Partial scholarships can be applied for depending on the
amount of funds available for scholarships. In some cases, partial scholarships can be provided
to new & returning NYA members, but again can only be applied for if you did not receive a
scholarship the previous year. For example, if you received either a full or partial scholarship for
2013, you may not apply for the scholarship in 2014, but are allowed to apply again for the
2015 scholarship.
Special circumstances do arise; in 2014 we were able to extend coverage to a handful of NYA
members to have only their convention registration fees covered, had they not already paid for
their registration fees. This is not the case each year, if there is money left over after allotting
for scholarships, HDSA and the NYA Board will see that no funds are wasted and we are able to
bring as many members to convention as we can.
NYA Day
NYA Day is planned by the NYA Day & Convention
Committee. It is held the Thursday prior to the start
of HDSA’s National Convention each year on Friday.
On this day, NYA members come together for
sharing sessions, activities, and educational sessions.
We are continuously thriving to provide the best
program of events for our members each year.
13
Sharing sessions may change depending on what information is received from NYA members,
some years we may be separated by age, other years members choose to keep everyone
together to share advice, life stories, and experiences with HD/JHD. Some groups may be lead
by a Social Worker, while others are lead by Peer Coordinators or members of the NYA Board.
Activities include, but are not limited to the following: ice breakers, trust exercises, and sharing
sessions. Each year we take activities that work well and incorporate new ideas to provide fun
and effective activities for NYA members of all ages to participate in.
Education sessions include learning about how to become more involved with Advocacy,
Research, and/or Fundraising. Planning for NYA day comes from several parties, the NYA Board,
NYA Committees, and HDSA. We also take information received through surveys from NYA
members throughout the year to help with the planning process.
NYA & HDYO Collaboration
In April 2014, HDYO teamed up with the NYA and
Canada’s youth organization YPAHD, to begin a Youth
Representatives project as previously mentioned. The
idea behind the project was to find young people
across North America who wanted to become trained
on how to be affective advocates for young people
who are impacted by Huntington’s disease. Eleven
U.S. Youth Representatives attended the training project. The event was planned by Project
Coordinator & founder of HDYO Matt Ellison, HDYO Youth Social Worker Chandler Swope,
HDYO Chair & NYA Advisor BJ Viau, and NYA President Seth Rotberg. All four came together to
plan a training day and to continue the collaboration between HDYO, NYA & YPAHD. Training
involved the following:
Who a Youth Representative is and what to expect-
o A young person impacted by Huntington’s disease, who has volunteered to
represent the NYA & HDYO in their local community, Chapters & Affiliates,
during fundraising and educational events.
How to present and represent both the NYA & HDYO effectively in the community
How to work together to provide the proper resources for support, education, and
friendship to young people impacted by Huntington’s disease
The HDYO helps to provide services to youth globally via their website, social media, and
directly through youth camps and educational events. The NYA helps to provide similar services
nationally in the United States through our own website, social media, and directly through
HDSA’s Chapters and Affiliates, educational events and NYA Day each year.
