Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Hawks

1 - This week’s Monday Night Football game will feature one of Liberty’s all-time greats (New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings) squaring off against one of Monmouth’s all-time best (Philadelphia Eagles WR Miles Austin). Jennings rushed for 3,633 yards and 42 TDs at Liberty between 2006-08, while Austin tallied 2,867 receiving yards and 33 TDs at Monmouth between 2002-05. Mean-while, Monmouth has only had one head coach in its 23 years of playing football, Kevin Callahan.

2 - Monmouth is playing its second season of Big South football after spending 17 years (1996-2012) playing Northeast Conference (NEC) foot-ball. The Hawks are in search of their second Big South win all-time, after going 1-4 in 2014 and dropping their 2015 conference opener at Charleston Southern last Saturday.

3 - Saturday’s matinee will mark the third all-time meeting between Liberty and Monmouth, and the first time they have squared off in New Jer-sey. Liberty is 2-0 versus the Hawks, with a 45-15 win in 2013 and a 34-24 victory in 2014.

4 - Liberty and Monmouth boast some of the top newcomers in the Big South Conference this sea-son, as the Flames and Hawks have combined to win four Big South Freshman of the Week hon-ors. The award winners include Monmouth QB Cody Williams, WR Reggie White Jr. and S Deonte Fair, as well as Liberty WR B.J. Farrow.

Road Warriors

• Saturday’s game marks the final stop on a sea-son-long four-game road swing for the Flames, after a 34-13 setback at Southern Illinois, a 41-33 victory at Georgia State and a 34-20 loss at Gard-ner-Webb.

• This is Liberty’s longest stretch of road games since 2001, when the Flames played five straight contests away from Williams Stadium.

• Liberty is one of seven FCS squads who will play four straight road games in 2015, joining Bryant, Colgate, Idaho State, North Carolina A&T, Sacred Heart and Wagner.

Flames in New Jersey

• Saturday’s game will mark Liberty’s first-ever football game in the state of New Jersey.

• New Jersey is the sixth different state Liberty has played in during the first seven weeks of the 2015 season, along with Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

• New Jersey will be the 26th different state Liber-ty has traveled to for a football game during its 43 seasons of competition.

Hawk Connections

• Both of Liberty’s New Jersey natives have con-nections with Monmouth players.

• Liberty offensive lineman Aharown Campbell, who lists Teaneck, N.J., as his hometown, spent one year at Hargrave Military Academy, as did Monmouth wide receiver Pat Gray.

• Liberty redshirt freshman WR Kyle Carrington and Monmouth sophomore WR Vinny Grasso both hail from Toms River, N.J., and were team-mates at Monsignor Donovan High School.

Milestone Watch1.5 - Chima Uzowihe needs 1.5 sacks to reach

25 for his career and tie his season high of 8.0 sacks set in 2014. Additionally, 1.5 tackles for a loss would enable Uzowihe to overtake Damon Bomar for fourth place on Liberty’s career list.

4 - Chris Turner has tallied three interceptions during his freshman season. His next pick will make him the first Liberty freshman with four in-terceptions in a season since Randall State had four as a freshman in 1998.

6 - With 6 more tackles, Wesley Scott will become the third active Flame with 100 career stops, joining Nick Newman and Chima Uzowihe.

9/61/69 - Darrin Peterson has the potential to set several records on Saturday. He needs nine catches to break Chris Summers’ Liberty career record of 188 grabs and 61 yards to eclipse Sum-mers’ program record of 2,712 receiving yards. If Peterson tallies 69 receiving yards, he would also break the Big South career record of 2,720 yards, currently held by former Coastal Carolina standout Jerome Simpson.

50 - John Lunsford has made 11 career field goals of 50 yards or longer. His next make from 50 yards or beyond will set a new FCS career record.

A Liberty Win Would ...• Wrap up the Flames’ season-long four-game

road swing with a 2-2 record.• Improve the Flames’ Big South road record to 7-2

under Turner Gill.• Give the Flames a 3-0 all-time record against

Monmouth.• Mark the team’s first-ever win in the state of

New Jersey.• Give the Flames a 4-3 record through seven

games for the second straight season.• Enable the Flames to avoid suffering back-to-

back Big South losses for the first time since Lib-erty dropped six consecutive conference games spanning the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

• Continue the Flames’ pattern of alternating one win and one loss, which began during the team’s pair of 2014 FCS Playoffs contests.

Quick Hitters• The Flames are currently ranked No. 22 in both

the STATS FCS Top 25 and the FCS Coaches Poll. They have now been ranked inside the Top 25 for nine straight weeks, dating back to the 2014 season.

• Liberty was ranked No. 10 in both FCS polls on Sept. 21, marking the Flames’ highest national ranking since 1990.

• The Flames’ 41-33 win at Georgia State on Oct. 3 was the team’s fourth all-time victory over an FBS opponent and second in as many years. The Flames’ previous FBS wins came against Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appala-chian State (2014).

• After a 31-21 win over No. 8/7 Montana on Sept. 19, Liberty is 5-2 in its last seven meetings with FCS Top 25 teams. That stretch was highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014, the Flames’ first-ever victory over a No. 1 team in program history.

• The Flames have captured seven Big South titles in the last eight years. They are 37-7 in confer-ence games since the start of the 2007 season.

• The Flames are 46-10 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season.
