Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Owls

1 - Saturday will mark Liberty’s first-ever visit to Kennesaw State’s Fifth Third Bank Stadium and both teams’ first Big South contest of the 2016 season. It will also be the first time the Flames have played a Big South game in the state of Georgia. The Owls rank first in the Big South in both rushing offense (299.4 ypg) and rushing de-fense (94.2 ypg) this season.

2 - Kennesaw State is in the midst of its second season of playing football. The Owls went 6-5 overall and 2-4 in Big South play during their in-augural campaign in 2015. Kennesaw State has lost just twice at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in program history, going 7-2 in home games. Con-versely, Liberty has not won a road contest since its last visit to Georgia (Oct. 3, 2015 at Georgia State), dropping five road games in a row.

3 - Kennesaw State has used three different quar-terbacks this season, after starter Trey White was injured during the season opener against ETSU. Redshirt sophomore Chandler Burks has started during each of the last four games, totaling 13 touchdowns (eight rushing, five passing).

4 - After losing a 20-17 overtime contest to ETSU to open the 2016 season, Kennesaw State has fashioned a program-record four-game winning streak. The run has been highlighted by back-to-back road wins at Duquesne (36-28) and Furman (52-42) on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, respectively.

Last Meeting with Kennesaw State

Oct. 24, 2015Liberty 45, Kennesaw State 35Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium)

• Liberty posted a 45-35 Homecoming victory in its first-ever meeting with Kennesaw State, a con-test which featured 826 yards of total offense.

• Josh Woodrum completed 15-of-21 passes for 230 yards and 4 TDs, becoming Liberty’s career passing yards leader.

• Darrin Peterson was Woodrum’s favorite target, finishing with four catches for 164 yards and three scores.

• John Lunsford hit a 57-yard field goal to end the first half, making him the FCS all-time leader with 12 career 50-yard field goals.

• Trey White threw for 71 yards and a TD, while also rushing 29 times for 94 yards and three TDs to pace the Kennesaw State attack.

• Kennesaw State made a late comeback attempt, scoring 21 fourth-quarter points before falling short and suffering their first-ever Big South loss.

Owl Connections• Kennesaw State’s roster features zero Virginia

natives. However, seven Flames hail from Geor-gia, including two who grew up within 20 miles of Kennesaw (QB Stephon Masha - Marietta and WR Antonio Gandy-Golden - Dallas).

• Liberty OL Michael Henderman graduated from Sandy Creek High School (Tyrone, Ga.), which is also the alma mater of four Owls (WR Christian Branch, OL EJ Hurley, WR Justin Sumpter and OL Ryan Warrior).

• Liberty OL Ethan Crawford was a teammate of Kennesaw State K Justin Thompson at Aquinas High School (Augusta, Ga.).

• Liberty P Trey Turner and Kennesaw State DL Desmond Johnson both graduated from Rome High School (Rome, Ga.).

• Liberty S Solomon McGinty and Kennesaw State RB Chaston Bennett both began their college ca-reers at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.

• Kennesaw State assistants Chris Bland, Grant Chesnut and Tim Glanton all played against Lib-erty during their collegiate careers.

Liberty in Big South Openers• Liberty is 9-5 all-time in Big South openers, in-

cluding 6-4 at Williams Stadium and 3-1 on the road.

• In Big South openers, Liberty is 4-3 against Gardner-Webb, 2-1 versus Coastal Carolina, 2-0 against Charleston Southern and 1-1 versus VMI.

• Liberty is averaging 42 ppg while going 7-2 in its last nine Big South openers. However, the Flames lost by a 34-20 count at Gardner-Webb to kick off conference play in 2015 (Oct. 10, 2015).

Liberty in the Peach State• Liberty is 2-4 all-time when playing in Georgia,

including victories in each of its last two Peach State contests. The Flames claimed a 41-33 vic-tory at Georgia State last season (Oct. 3, 2015) and a 28-0 triumph at Savannah State on Sept. 23, 2006.

• Liberty’s other contests in Georgia resulted in a pair of losses to both Georgia Southern (1984 and 1996) and West Georgia (1984 and 1986).

It’s Been a While• Liberty is seeking its first road win since its last

visit to Georgia, a 41-33 triumph at Georgia State on Oct. 3, 2015.

• Since then, the Flames have lost five straight road games in five different states (New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virgin-ia).

Milestone Watch1 - After recovering his fifth career fumble during

the season opener at Virginia Tech, Erwin Des-sources’ next fumble recovery will move him into a tie for second place on Liberty’s all-time list.

5 - Dante’ Shells has hauled in a touchdown re-ception in each of the last four games, becom-ing the first Flame to catch a touchdown pass in four straight contests since Darrin Peterson (Nov. 1-22, 2014). No Liberty player has ever hauled in a touchdown reception in five consecutive games.

7 - Tyrin Holloway is seven tackles shy of 100 for his career. He is looking to join fellow Flames Nick Newman, Dexter Robbins, Wesley Scott and Ja-Ron Greene as members of the 100-tackle club.

300/347 - Stephen Calvert threw for a Liberty freshman-record 340 yards against Robert Mor-ris. If he reaches the 300-yard mark on Saturday, he would become the first Flames freshman ever to record back-to-back 300-yard passing efforts. If Calvert throws for 347 yards, he would become just the third Liberty QB ever to total 1,000 pass-ing yards as a freshman (also Paul Johnson/1986 and Josh Woodrum/2012).

A Liberty Win Would ...• Give the Flames a victory in their Big South open-

er for the eighth time in the last 10 years, boost-ing Liberty’s all-time record in Big South lid-lifters to 10-5.

• Improve Liberty’s record to 41-9 in its last 50 Big South games, dating back to 2007.

• Snap the Flames’ five-game road losing streak and mark the team’s first road win since Oct. 3, 2015 at Georgia State.

• Mark Liberty’s third straight victory when playing in Georgia and improve the Flames’ record to 3-4 all-time in the Peach State.

• Give the Flames a 2-0 all-time record against Kennesaw State, making Liberty the first-ever team to record a pair of victories over the Owls.

• Halt Kennesaw State’s program-record four-game winning streak.

• Drop the Owls’ all-time home record to 7-3.

Quick Hitters• The Flames have captured seven Big South titles

in the last nine years, entering the 2016 cam-paign. They are 40-9 in conference games since the start of the 2007 season.

• Liberty is 6-4 in its last 10 meetings with FCS Top 25 teams. The stretch was highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014, the Flames’ first-ever victory over a No. 1 team in program history.

• The Flames are 51-11 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season, in-cluding 2-1 this season.

• Liberty has recorded 10 straight winning seasons, dating back to 2006. That makes the Flames one of five active FCS programs with a current streak of 10 or more in a row, along with Harvard (15 seasons), Jacksonville State (13), New Hampshire (12) and McNeese State (11).

• The Flames’ 41-33 win at Georgia State on Oct. 3, 2015 was the team’s fourth all-time victory over an FBS opponent and second in as many years. The Flames’ previous FBS wins came against Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appalachian State (2014).
