FOREWORD

This is chiefly an author and title index, though a few subject headings have been used. Also, two separate indexes appear at the end; one for illustrations and portraits, and one for maps.

The following explanations are offered to facilitate use of the index.

Abbreviations used throughout the work are: AHSGR (American Historical Society of Germans From Russia), ed. (editor), tr. (translator), comp. (compiler), facsim. (facsimile), and Msgr. (Monsignor).

For the sake of brevity, the initial articles in titles have been omitted. Also omitted is the word “by” between a title and the author’s name and following the abbreviations for editor, translator and compiler. Titles, except for the religious ones: Sister, Pastor, Reverend, Father and Monsignor, are also omitted.

Subject headings appear in capital letters in the main body of the index. When appearing under a contributor’s name, only the first word is capitalized. In German titles, the German form of capitalizing only nouns and proper names is used.

Brief untitled contributions relating to special subjects are listed under the subject heading by issue and page reference; and the subject is ‘listed under the contributor’s name, with issue and page reference, in the main body of the index.

Book reviews are listed by title under that heading, giving author, issue and page reference. The notation “Book review,” with issue and page reference, is given under the reviewer’s name in the main body of the index.
