5IMnI Statistics 2017

The International Manganese Institute (IMnI) is a not-for-profit

industry association that represents manganese ore and alloy

producers, manufacturers of metallurgical products or che-

mical compounds, trading houses, industry service providers,

companies involved in Mn business development, universities

and research organizations around the world.

Founded in 1975, with headquarters in Paris, France, IMnI’s

mission is to provide vision and guidance to the Mn industry

by promoting economic, social and environmental responsibi-

lity and sustainability to all stakeholders.

Introduction

7IMnI Statistics 2017

Market Research at the IMnI

IMnI provides the most comprehensive and accurate manganese industry market research available.

Circulated on a monthly basis, IMnI’s reports examine both pro-duction and consumption, and the balance between the two, loo-king at the industry from both sides of the supply demand equa-tion. The primary objective of these reports is to offer an analysis of the immediate past, which can provide the basis for Members to develop a greater understanding of their business.

The IMnI Market Research Manager examines manganese ore and alloy consumption as they relate to the steel industry with the application of an industry model. This approach provides increa-sed accuracy and a systematic way to better understand and an-ticipate changes in the industry. A detailed analysis of IMnI data is also published on a monthly basis.

IMnI also issues monthly trade matrices for Mn Ore, Alloys, EMM and EMD, a steel production report, and also publishes a list of current manganese producers and future manganese projects.

All IMnI data is available via the IMnI website www.manganese.orgThis data is reserved for IMnI Members, but non-members can buy our reports by contacting Aloys d’Harambure at:[email protected]

Objectives of the IMnI Statistics Committee

•Represent IMnI Members in their expectations regarding market research and statistics.

•Identify best market research report formats and practices.

•Standardize units of measure for reporting metrics.

•Support the IMnI Market Research Manager by validating estima-tes of production and demand for some countries.

Global production of silico-manganese recovered in 2016, although crude steel production remained stable from the previous year around 1.7 billion mt. Asia produced 1.2 billion mt of crude steel last year (represen-ting 71% of the global steel output), a 0.4% increase over 2015. Europe, North America and the CIS together produced 375 million mt in 2016, off 0.9% over the previous year.

Silico-manganese smelters increased output to 12.5 million mt in 2016, a rise of 8% compared to the pre-vious year, which was marked by widespread production cuts, especially in Asia, Ukraine and Brazil. Around 80% of the world’s output was produced in Asia and Oceania in 2016, 11% in the CIS, followed by Europe (4%), the Americas (3%), and Africa and the Middle East (2%).

The world’s output of manganese ore continued contracting for the second consecutive year in 2016, des-pite total manganese alloy production rising by 4% last year. Manganese miners produced 15.3 million net mt (Mn units) in 2016, off by 7% from 2015 as the market progressively rebalanced, and the excess supply accumulated since 2013 along the supply chain was consumed. Supply from Africa & the Middle East ac-counted for 41% of the total, while Asia & Oceania together produced around 40% of 2016 output, the rest being shared between the CIS countries (11%), the Americas (8%), and Europe (0.16%).

*Manganese metal produced at Privat's Zaporozhye plant in Ukraine is aluminothermic manganese metal, not electrolytic.

Global production of manganese metal increased in 2016, reaching 1.26 million mt, 8% higher than in 2015 due to rising demand from the stainless steel industry. Manganese metal supply expanded in China, which now represents 97% of the world’s output, while combined production in the rest of the world contracted in 2016.
