PREFACE

This book is dedicated to wrestlers, coaches, and fans of Bronco wrestling to

whom over the years have been supporters of the great sport of wrestling. It is the hope

that this book will be a source of history of the Bronco wrestling program, and to be a

guide to the many great memories of triumphant matches and also to the difficult

memories of heart-breaking defeats of the past.

I wish to thank the following people for their help with putting this information

together. First, the people at the International Falls Library who took the time to assist

with finding many past newspapers and yearbooks. Second, the coaches, and

especially George Fraik, who retained the vital information needed for this book. Third,

the many people who helped with the “little” problems, but found “big” solutions. Finally,

Stuart Nordquist, who kindled my interest in the history of all Bronco athletics and

without whose original vision and love for Bronco athletics, this book would not have

been possible.

LOOKING BACK

The history of wrestling at Falls High School is a disjointed one. The first team

took to the mat in the fall of 1966 and the “last” team in the winter of 1993 before being

revived in the fall of 2014. Gerald Sutherland (1966-1968) was the first coach, and the

Broncos were the first school in District 27 to have a wrestling team. The Broncos were

part of Region 7 which included teams from Hibbing, Grand Rapids, and Forest Lake

among others. The first interscholastic meet was contested on December 10, 1966

against Cass Lake in Cass Lake. The Broncos came away with a 28-28 tie. The first

home meet was on January 3, 1967, versus Greenway. The first victory would come in

a rematch at home with Cass Lake on January 14, 1967, by a score of 35-22. In the

1967-1968 season, the Broncos took part in their first Iron Range Conference meet.

The meet was a team meet for three seasons and then changes to an individual meet

until 1977 when it is held for the final time. The Broncos hosted the IRC meet twice, in

1969 and 1976.

Stan Hendrickson (1968-1976) became the second head coach in the fall of

1968. In the 1969-1970 season, the Broncos sent their first wrestler to the Minnesota

State Wrestling meet as Garrett Bacon wins the Region 7 title. John Holler made the

state meet in each of the next two seasons. In 1975-1976 as with most sports, the

Minnesota State High School League created two classes for wrestling. The Broncos

are placed in Region 7AA. Also for 1975-1976 season, the MSHSL institutes a team

state wrestling meet and a state individual meet to be held at the same time.

After the 1975-1976 season, Stan Hendrickson stepped down, and Tom

Lamphere (1976-1977) took on the head coaching duties. Paul Tessier became the

Page 4: TABLE OF CONTENTS - Amazon Web Services...home meet was on January 3, 1967, versus Greenway. The first victory would come in a rematch at home with Cass Lake on January 14, 1967, by

third Bronco to qualify for the state meet during Lamphere’s only season as head coach.

Longtime assistant coach Dick Ostroot (1977-1980, 1983-1984) took over for

Lamphere and had an interrupted tenure. Ostroot was head coach for three seasons

and then stepped aside as John Holler (1980-1983) was named the fifth head coach in

Bronco wrestling history for three seasons. Ostroot then returned for one final season

as head coach in the fall of 1983. The Broncos won their first ever team invitational in

December of 1978 as they defeat Centennial, Chisago Lakes and Virginia at the

Chisago Lakes Invitational. Four wrestlers made it to the state wrestling meet during

Ostroot’s head coaching time: John Levene and Tim Ostroot in 1978 and Jim Levene

and Brian Smith in 1980. Jim Levene also qualifies in 1981 under Holler’s tutelage. In

February of 1983, International Falls High School hosted the Region 7AA team

tournament.

Another longtime assistant George Fraik (1984-1993) became the sixth head

wrestling coach in fall of 1984. The Broncos joined the Mat King Conference beginning

in the 1984-1985 season along with Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Superior, and

Virginia. In February of 1986, International Falls High School hosted the Region 7AA

individual tournament. Jerry Levene in 1985, Keith Crandall in 1987 and 1989, Tracy

Everett in 1989 all qualified for the state wrestling meet. In 1990, the Broncos had three

wrestlers qualify for the state wrestling meet in the same season: Chad Hell, Kevin

Crandall, and Ken Scholler. Pete Benedix qualified for state in 1991. In Janaury of

1992, the school board voted to cut the wrestling program. The Broncos wrestled

against the Virginia Blue Devils in their final home wrestling meet on February 13, 1992.

The Broncos are able to field a team for the 1992-1993 season through fundraising by

the Falls Wrestling Club, but did not have enough wrestlers to fill all the weight classes

as many of the wrestlers had moved onto other activities.

Through the efforts of the Mighty Mustang feeder program and many individuals,

the Falls High wrestling program was reborn for the 2014-15 season. Although the

Broncos were unable to field an entire team and therefore did not participate in any dual

or invitational meets, the groundwork was laid for future teams. International Falls was

placed in Section 7A. Beginning in the 2017-18 season, the Bronco wrestling program

formed a cooperative program with Nashwauk-Keewatin-Greenway wrestling program.

This allowed both programs to better fill out team rosters to compete more fully in dual

meets. The head coach was Chad Snider, a faculty member at Nashwauk-Keewatin

schools. Three wrestlers won Section 7AA individual titles: Kole Platt (160), Matt Jeska

(170), and Bryce Smith (182). The 2017-18 season concluded the 31 seasons of

Bronco wrestling.
