INTRODUCTION

It is the intent of this chapter to establish the practices and specific requirements of the Structure and Bridge Division for developing a bridge layout. A bridge layout encompasses geometric and substructure placement relative to the established baseline of construction. A bridge layout forms the base geometry for developing the substructure layout. Consequently, bridge and substructure layouts should share common features and parameters. The chapter also provides slope protection requirements and guidelines for different bridge crossings and limits of protection along wing walls. Different construction materials used for slope protection provide different levels of protection to the substructure and foundation. The limits of termination for slope protection for different substructure types and wingwall configurations have been identified in this chapter.

Additionally, information is provided in this chapter for bridge stakeout. The stakeout identifies specific survey points and markers along the bridge substructure necessary for the construction of the bridge. Checklists for developing the layout for curved bridge geometry, substructure, and bridge stakeout have been developed for this chapter, and are included with the respective sections discussed above. A typical project should generally have one sheet dedicated to the bridge layout and substructure layout.

NOTE: Due to various restrictions on placing files in this manual onto the Internet, portions of the drawings shown do not necessarily reflect the correct line weights, line types, fonts, arrowheads, etc. Wherever discrepancies occur, the written text shall take precedence over any of the drawn view.

GENERAL INFORMATION

This section of the chapter includes a sample Bridge Stakeout plan with a checklist. The sample plan represents a typical Bridge Stakeout plan, some projects may require additional information. It is the responsibility of the Land Surveyor to include enough information in order to accurately layout the bridge foundations. The bridge stakeout also shall comply with the current VDOT Survey Manual. It should be noted that this information is not the responsibility of the designer and is not to be included with the plans. This information shall be provided by the Contractor for the purpose of construction and shall be reviewed by the Department.
