Hot Time in Sioux Falls One of the favorite road trips for many CCC members is the trek up to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for Hot Summer Nites. So, what is Hot Summer Nites, you ask? It is hot cars, cold drinks, great food and live music. It was a mid-week party at the 22nd Annual Hot Summer Nites on Wednesday, July 15!

This is actually a weeklong celebration of Corvettes and fun in Sioux Falls. This year it started on Saturday, July 11 with drag racing and hot Harleys on display. There are events every day with one of the features being the Corvette show on Wednesday evening called Hot Summer Nites. Beginning at 4:30, only Corvettes are allowed in the downtown area. The streets are blocked off a short time later and the streets become a car show and party, with street vendors serving food and beer. Bands keep the good vibes going, and this year featured one of the final appearances of long time Omaha band, The Rumbles. They did sound great. Thursday morning begins the cruise to Spearfish for rallies, races and more fun. For more info, visit their website at www.blackhillscorvetteclassic.com.

This year, over 20 CCC Corvettes gathered at the Missouri Valley rest stop on I80. The rain did not dampen the spirits, as our hosts, Kevin and Jayne Reit (Sioux Falls natives) filled us in on directions.

The first stop was Gathering of Corvettes – Jerry’s Corvette Center in Beresford. They provided us with a wonderful lunch as the Corvettes gathered and registered for the Black Hills Rally to Spearfish.

Then, it was on to Sioux Falls for a little liquid refreshment before venturing out to the downtown show.

Beautiful downtown Sioux Falls provided a perfect backdrop for a beautiful evening of fun and dining at Minerva’s Restraunt – yummy!

The streets were filled with Corvettes and more Corvettes. It was like Corvette Heaven!

Parading in Gretna What could be better on a hot summer day than a parade through the fastest growing community in Nebraska? How about a parade with a party afterward? Hmmmm….that is even better!

Rick and Joan Harshbarger, also known as the king and queen of Gretna, were our gracious hosts for this event. We gathered for coffee and directions before heading to the parade route. One count had 23 corvettes, lead by a Hummer with Corvette Club flags. The cars were in model order, starting with Allen and Palmer’s fine C3 leading the way.

After the parade, we returned to the Harshbarger plantation for delicious pulled pork and pot luck.

Stein Night is a GAS Stein Night is an annual event at the German American Society (GAS) located on 120th Street between Center and L Street. As always, it was a huge success, proving that being German on Stein Night is just like being Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. This year, 238 people were greeted at the door by our CCC hosts, George and Carolyn Horst. The event was open to everyone, but the members of CCC certainly made their presence known.

So, you ask, what exactly is Stein Night? It is just like it sounds. You bring your favorite stein and the friendly people behind the bar will fill it with your favorite German beer. There were also samples available of the beverages created by the GAS Brewer’s Club.

Before the evening was over, eight kegs of beer were consumed. Yes that was EIGHT kegs of beer!

Amazingly, no one from our club did anything silly (except for these guys).

Music was provided by the Bolzen Beer Band. They play all kinds of popular songs from the 60’s to current hits. What is really unique is that they all sound like a Polka! Have you ever heard “Light My Fire” played on a tuba? Right now you may be thinking, “Oh, if only I could have been there!” Well, you are not totally out of luck. This popular beer-drinking band will return next year for Stein Night 2016.

We were also treated to delicious burgers and brats, made by the GAS Sausage Club. Fun time for all.

Artistic Cruise to Lincoln

Who says the Cornhusker Corvette Club does not have a cultural side? Summer is the perfect time to cruise to Lincoln for a visit to Sheldon Art Gallery and the Beautiful Sunken Gardens.

The first stop was the art gallery, which is located on the campus of the University of Nebraska. Carolyn Horst was greeted by a member of the Husker basketball team.

Many of the club members took in the paintings and drawings on the 2 floors of the gallery. We managed to snap a few pictures before the security person made us stop.

Page 14: TABLE OF CONTENTS · 1 HUSKER NEWS ’N VIEWS AUGUST 2015 TABLE OF CONTENTS Pg 1 Summer Festival Pg 5 Sioux Falls Cruise Pg 8 Gretna Parade Pg 10 Stein Night Pg 13 Lincoln Cruise

14

After a brief discussion on the value of art compared to the value of beer on a hot summer day, it was time to head to the sunken gardens. Built in 1930, the Sunken Gardens was a Depression-era project, built on a former abandoned neighborhood dumpsite. The 1.5 acres were originally donated by the Seacrests, the Faulkners and the Freys -- long time Lincoln families.

As a part of a city program helping unemployed men to earn money, E.M. Bair hired crew members to work on this garden. The men worked eight-hour shifts, two days a week for a total of $6.40 per week.

Lincoln's "Rock Garden" (as it was originally called) reflected the popular 1930's trend for rock gardens in progressive communities. Rocks were used for the garden's skeleton and for structures like water fountains and retaining walls at different heights to create terraced levels.

In 1931, the Gardens were in full bloom with 416 trees and shrubs. Final construction cost for the Sunken Gardens was $2,500. Today it is a favorite place for weddings.

Greg Young Show for Super Heroes

Car shows are always fun, but sometimes the reason for the show makes it even more special. Little Jack Speichert was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in 2014 at the age of two. He was treated at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Super Jack’s dream, along with his parents, Tim and Sarah Speichert, is to start a foundation in order to bring a Pediatric Center to Omaha. All proceeds for this event went to make that dream a reality.

Chairs for the car show were Perry Dawes & Sandy Swift. Co-chairs were Linda Dawes & Pat Swift. Colleen Norgard & Carolyn Edmundsen helped with registration.

Czech This Out

When it is summer in Wilber Nebraska, it can only mean one thing….the annual Czech Festival.

Temperatures rose to 95 degrees, but that did not stop this small town, located west of Beatrice from swelling to nearly twice its normal size. This included about a dozen Corvettes from CCC.

Message from the President

It’s been nonstop CCC action lately. Can’t remember when I’ve had so much fun. From Polka dancing at Stein night to filling in for Erv, as Batman, at the Gregg Young Car Show/ Valve cover

racing competition. Don’t want to mention any names but someone’s valve cover needs to be challenged. The car show by the way was very well attended. Your attendance was much appreciated. Then it was convention warm-up racing at Raceway Park of the Midlands. We enjoyed the company of racers from all over the country. All in all it was a great weekend. Thank

you to all that helped put the weekend together.

As long as I have been a part of this wonderful club, Summer Festival has been billed as a major summer highlight of activities. It will soon be Labor Day Weekend or should I say Summer Festival Weekend. Please check the schedule, come out and be part of the tradition. Fun, fun, fun is just around the corner. Registration will be available at the next General Meeting.

Nominations for CCC BOD will be taken during the General Meeting in September. Please consider running for an office. Granted the pay isn’t great, but the rewards are.

Save the wave, Jerry

They will also list dates of events within your club or region and this information must be emailed to me by August 15, 2015 at [email protected] I realize that many regions do not have their competition calendar set by this time. However, some clubs may be celebrating special anniversaries in 2016, your region may have determined the date for a regional banquet, or your club may host a weekend event every year at the same time. It does not have to be a competition sanctioned event, all club events will be considered so please email this information to me by August 15, 2015. The rebates will be offered in gift certificates that can be used for regional awards or as your regional officers determine. More details in the next issue of BLUE BARS. Thanks for your participation! Debbie Lindsey NCCC Director of Sponsorship Don't forget those dates! Governor’s Meetings were held April 24th & 25th in St. Louis. Some of the items that were discussed: Discussions have started to hold a Region event in 2016 to raise money for the Region to be used to offset the cost of the 200 member club awards, the Scholarship Fund, and other items to benefit the members. General Meeting Minutes

July 16, 2015 Bel Air Banquet Room

Bill Anderson, Sergeant at Arms mentioned to please turn off all cell phones and the meeting would start in five minutes.

Jerry Koraleski, President, began the meeting with Ray Kennedy, CCC Member and Retired Marine, coming to the front of the banquet hall to lead the club in The Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the Marines and civilians that were killed in Tennessee today.

Jerry continued the meeting with acknowledging the club members who have suffered losses in their families recently, those who are sick and the joy of the birth of a baby to the Kuhfahl family.

Tim Ogle, Vice President, and Webmaster was able to be at the Banquet Hall before the meeting to hand out information and tie up some loose ends before he had to leave town, so there is no formal report tonight from Tim.

Marie Manz, Membership Director reported that Paul Bohannon’s sister has passed away, asked for prayers and support for the Paul’s family before introducing

individuals who have joined CCC. These new members arrive with some very special talents and some very special Corvettes—a 1961, 1963, (62 Pontiac), 1965, 1972, 2005 and 2009!!

Marie also satisfied a special request from Steve and Monica Baxter, Chairmen for the “Mary Our Queen” event. The Baxters need to know how many will be attending so it is important to sign up tonight.

But the best news of all from Marie is that a very special Marine of eight years is coming home to begin his college degree!

President Koraleski then asked for the reading of the members’ names that have a birthday this month and attending the meeting. Bob Hegwood’s name was drawn and he was able to choose whatever he wanted from the gift table.

At this point of the meeting, it was announced that $125 was collected thus far for the 50/50 drawing to be held at the end of the meeting and an equal amount will be given to the Kidney Foundation of Nebraska which is our designated charity this year.

Kevin Reit reported on the successful turn-out of 51 members at “Hot Summer Nights” just the night before in Sioux Falls,

South Dakota. A stop by the caravan was made at the exit of Beresford, S.D. at “Jerry’s Chevrolet”. This dealership has quit an array of Corvettes which the club members enjoyed and “Jerry’s Chevrolet” also had a nice lunch for everyone that stopped. Kevin had arranged for discounted hotel rates and he and his wife, Jayne had made reservations for 51 club members at “Minerva’s Restaurant” for the evening. Not only did the Reits arrange these events, they also escorted this group to the local ice cream shop for strawberry soft serve!

Page 27: TABLE OF CONTENTS · 1 HUSKER NEWS ’N VIEWS AUGUST 2015 TABLE OF CONTENTS Pg 1 Summer Festival Pg 5 Sioux Falls Cruise Pg 8 Gretna Parade Pg 10 Stein Night Pg 13 Lincoln Cruise

27

Reits had asked that club members wear their red club shirts which caught the attention of other exhibitors and Kevin had to explain that they were not “The Bloods, but the Cornhuskers”.

Joan Harshbarger was asked to give the details of the Gretna parade that is two days away. The Harshbargers have been hospitable to once again open their home to club members for a BBQ after the parade.

Jan Gunderson, Secretary, received a motion to accept the General meeting minutes as

published in the newsletter from Perry Dawes -and seconded by Teresa Eller. Jan reminded members that the United States Flags and Club Flags for our Corvettes are available to order for your Corvette on club nights.

Tom Horeis, Treasurer, discussed the financial report. The report would appear as though the club was above the budget but the entry fees of the auto cross held in June were delivered to him in July. Considering these dollars, the club is actually $2,400 below budget. CCC is in good shape again!

While Tom was taking his seat, Jerry showed the newest “National

Championship Winner” window stickers that are also for sale at General Meetings. They are

available in a couple of different sizes at a couple of different prices.

Jon Manz, Governor-no report.

Don Angeroth, Competition Director, read off the low speed event dates and locations that are left for the West Region area. There are plenty of events left outside of the West Region area for those who travel.

Jayne Sainz, and Kathy Cashell Co-Social Director, received accolades for doing an outstanding job from President Koraleski as demonstrated by the increase in attendance at these social events. His comment was “I’m just receiving more and more great comments from our members”.

Jayne then announced the upcoming socials from this Saturday through the end of September.

An additional social is scheduled for August 13 at 6:30 at Gene and Kathy Gau’s home. It’s time again for “Gene’s Movie Night” and the movie is a mystery. There will be hot dogs and brats served. As a Rotary fundraiser, Gene will be accepting donations to stamp out polio.

The H&H All Chevy Show is Sunday and Jerry appointed Ray Kennedy to be lead on parking cars at 8:00 and asked that Ray choose an

28

assistant to help him. CCC’s shift is from 8:00 – 9:00 and Jerry will join Ray at 8:30.

Bill Cashell, Editor, announced that he would like the new members to see him after the meeting so he could take a picture of them for the newsletter.

JB Benedict, Points Chairman- “pointed out” that CCC is ahead in points by 9,000 points. We have a lot of people turning out for activities and that equals points! Teresa Eller is #1 in the ladies’ division, Joe Eller is #2 in the men’s and Jayne Sainz is #1 in the social category.

There were 10-12 members who served 800 hot dogs at the second Leach Camper Sales open house.

JB has been collecting newspapers from the club members for an animal shelter and the shelter received a truck load from a grocery store, so until further notified, please hold off on bringing the papers to the general meetings until further notice.

Perry Dawes was asked to promote the Gregg Young Car and Valve Cover Race on August 1. It is unfortunate that Bat Man will not be able to attend this event, but we can all be heroes to a little boy by the name of Jack Speichert by putting your Corvette in this show. All proceeds will go to fund a dream he and his parents have which is to bring a Pediatric Cancer Center to Omaha. As a side note, this little boy is a nephew to Pat & Sandy Swift’s son-in-law.

Jerry mentioned the following events that are coming up: Harchelroad’s event, Riverfest and a car show at the corner of S. Expressway and Veteran’s Highway in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ron

Wolf, a CCC member, will be judging at Riverfest and they expect to have 400-500 cars there.

Pat Swift, Public Relations Director, absent. He and Sandy were out of town spending some time with Jack and his family today.

Ervin Gunderson, Summer Festival Chairman, announced that 79 shirts for Summer Festival had been ordered which fulfilled the minimum order requirement! The Summer Festival Chair people are

outstanding, and Ron Norgard knows where he’s going.

As Erv returned to his seat, Jerry commented that Friday night and Saturday is being held at a beautiful golf course and this is really going to be a nice weekend.

died and the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo has slipped to #2 in the world. BUT, CCC has the #1 best Convention Co-chairman in the world and if you’re not on a committee for the convention, contact the co-chairman, Jerry Koraleski.

P.L. Pilger wanted to say a few words about teching for the convention. The number of people signed up to help tech are few, it’s an easy job and because P.L. wants to limit the shifts to two hours it’s going to take more people than have signed up. P.L. would appreciate having more people sign up now. There is a tech sheet that needs to be checked off, so ladies, you could help by checking the sheets for the guys as they examine the cars. P.L. wants to have four teams of two. Please let P.L. know that you will help. Kathy Brisbois stated that she is going to organize some gals to do the Rallye Tech.

Old Business- none

New Business- Johnny Lynn Williams informed Jerry that there was a notice in the newspaper that tires can be disposed of at the Arlington County Fair Center on August 7 from 8:00 to noon; however, this service is not open to Iowa residents.

Terry Murkins of H&H Chevrolet brought forth a charitable request to CCC owners of Corvette

convertibles. Eight year old Kate Foor, “Little Miss Nebraska Princess”, who has overcome horrendous difficulties, will be attending three nearby parades and Terry wants to see her waving from a Corvette. The parade dates are August 1, August 15 and September 26.

The ticket number of 617583 was drawn for the 50/50 drawing of $128.00. Colleen Norgard, a birthday girl, wearing a pink Corvette shirt held the winning pink ticket and won for the very first time ever! As Secretary, I looked to see when she and Ron joined and they joined in 1996! That was a long time coming, Colleen-good for you!

Raffle tickets continued to be drawn until the gift table was empty.

How sweet it was to celebrate birthdays with Colleen Norgard and Bill Howdle. Both of their spouses brought birthday cake to share with the club. What a pleasant surprise and oh so good! Thank you!

Motion to close was made by Ray Kennedy and seconded by Cork Adams.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jannette Gunderson

Cork and Linda Adams accepted Terry Murkins request for a convertible ride for Little Miss Nebraska Princess, eight year old Kate Foor.

These are the photos from the A to A parade in Bellevue Saturday. The football was special. Her grandmother spent 2 days putting the bling on it one at a time. There were 3000 of them.
