2 Annual Report
Iam proud to report that
2006 was a big year for the
Boys & Girls Clubs of
Huntington Valley. The Clubs'
Unit Directors and their staffs,
under the leadership of Tanya
and Art, continue to carry on
the fine tradition of providing
developmental programs that
make a difference by dedicating
themselves to our mission: To
inspire and enable the healthy development of all
children to realize their full potential as productive,
responsible, and caring members of the community.
After serving as President of the Board for the past two
years, I fully appreciate and respect the real-life meaning
of that mission statement and the Herculean effort it
takes to live up to that statement. Last year, when I
penned this report, we were a three-Club organization.
This year, I am proud to report that we now have five
Clubs and are on the threshold of adding a new Boys &
Girls Club complex on the Golden West College campus,
which I will address later in this report.
2006 saw the challenges I discussed in my 2005 report
and I am elated to report that we met those challenges
and are proud of our many accomplishments. As
planned, we opened the ClubHouse Academy in
Fountain Valley to enrich our performing arts programs
and added badly needed office space. With the closing
of the Kid Connection Branch in Huntington Beach, we
renovated the Huntington Beach Branch and the
Fountain Valley Kingston Branch to accommodate Kid
Connection's school age children and we relocated the
Learning Center Preschool to a new site in Huntington
Beach when a former Ocean View school site, Haven
View, became available. Concurrently, we relocated and
expanded the Twilight Education Program. These moves,
renovations, and expansions required extensive planning
and preparation and a lot of hard work - and it was all
accomplished while maintaining the high quality of care
for which we are known.
While the growth and expansion was taking place, our
five Clubs served more than 7,000 youth with more than
1,700 children attending our sites each day. Our fleet of
12 yellow school buses makes this possible by
transporting children to and from 34 elementary and
middle schools within the Huntington Beach City,
Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, and Ocean View School
Districts.
The highlight of the year has to be winning the contract
to build a Boys & Girls Club on the Golden West College
campus, which I believe is a first for the Boys & Girls
Clubs of America--having a Club in the center of a
college campus. This is a major milestone in the rich
history of this wonderful organization and will enable the
Club to serve an even greater number of families that
need an affordable, safe, and nurturing environment in
which their children can grow and develop.
Our ability to spread the word about these outstanding
accomplishments did not go unnoticed at the National
Headquarters. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America
recognized our clubs from among 4,200 clubs across
the nation as the winners of three prestigious Marketing
and Communications awards: the Silver Award for having
a first-class overall comprehensive marketing strategy;
Silver Award for recognizing our outstanding Club
publications, and the Bronze Award for one of the best
websites in the nation, www.bgchv.org.
Finally, I have to mention my gratitude for another
outstanding Annual Benefit Dinner and Auction. A huge
thanks to all of you, we raised nearly $400,000 to
support our critically important scholarship programs.
These programs ensure access for all children, especially
those from disadvantaged circumstances.
Looking to the future, 2007 will bring challenges we
would have never anticipated a year ago, the biggest of
which is the Building Dreams Capital Campaign to raise
$6 million to build the new Boys & Girls Club on the
Golden West College campus. This will take another
Herculean effort but I am confident that the Board of
Directors and community are up to that challenge.
Sincerely,
Al GuidottiPresident
Board of Directors

Annual Report 3
Getting Down to the CoreFive Development Areas Engage Club MembersEach day at the Club, thousands of children participate in programs that are part of the Boys& Girls Clubs of America’s five core areas of youth development. These programs help children dare to dream big and give them the skills, knowledge, and character they will needto make those dreams of brighter futures come true.
Full-size gymnasiums and outdoor play areas give kids the
opportunity to get active and fit while having fun as part of their
regular after school routine. Games rooms at each of our school
age branches teach kids about positive use of their leisure time,
stress relief, sportsmanship, and fair play.
Each year, more than 1,500 children ages 3 ½ to 15 participate in
arena soccer, basketball, and flag football leagues. With three
seasons each year, there are year-round opportunities for youth to
get fit and have fun in organized sports programs. As part of a
team, kids are gaining social skills, improving motor skills,
learning to work together, making friends, and having fun.
The ClubHouse Academy gives kids ages three and up a chance to
explore their talents while getting active and developing good
exercise habits. Children can take ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, beginning
and intermediate gymnastics, tae kwon do, and karate under the tutelage of professional instructors who provide a
supportive and fun environment for the kids. Even older teens and adults can get in on the fitness fun through special
classes created just for them.
SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATION
Success in school begins at the earliest ages, so the Club’s two
preschools help children develop the skills and knowledge they
need to meet Kindergarten readiness standards set by local
school districts. The Club has an award-winning model afterschool
Kindergarten program that helps ease the transition between
preschool and elementary school. School age Club members
have a place to get the academic support they need even if some
working parents are too busy to help or a language barrier poses
challenges for other parents. The Club’s popular education
centers offer members a quiet place to study and get help with
homework from mentors and staff. With at least 10 computers in
each education center, children can complete their homework,
have supervised internet access, play educational games, and
participate in digital arts programs in which they learn graphic
design, digital photography, website design, digital music making,
movie editing, and more.
EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
4 Annual Report
The Club works hard to infuse character building opportunities into
every program it offers. Helping other kids and getting involved in
service activities is encouraged and rewarded among all
members. The program Character Traits highlights one positive
trait a month and rewards kids who demonstrate that trait at the
Club. Teens and pre-teens in particular are encouraged to become
leaders and act as role models for younger kids. Teens assist
younger kids and staff by running games and activities in the
Kindergarten classrooms once a week. Many children can be found
helping each other with homework in the Club’s education centers.
Through Torch and Keystone Clubs, youth take on
leadership roles as they work together to plan and implement
community service projects, as well as special events and
entrepreneurial ventures that raise money for the Club, for their
service projects, and for the annual opportunity to participate in a
national service project at the Keystone Convention.
In the arts and crafts rooms at each of the Clubs, children can stretch
their imaginations. They learn about great artists and develop their
creativity as they make their own amazing creations through drawing,
painting, and exploring a variety of media.
Through the Club’s performing arts programs, youth can express
themselves as actors, singers, dancers, and gymnasts. Just like
sports teams, these programs help youth find a longstanding passion
and a place that they feel like they belong. Kids work hard to hone
their artistic talents and the Club gives them the opportunity to take
center stage and show off the results of their hard work through
performances like the dance and gymnastics showcases and three
annual musicals performed by the ever-growing and award-winning
ClubHouse Theatre program. The discipline youth gain through
regular rehearsals and the confidence they gain from their time on
stage carries over to improve their school and home lives as well.
Through programs like Smart Girls and Passport to Manhood, staff
members guide small groups of teens and pre-teens in making
good choices and developing healthy attitudes about key areas in
which teens are making decisions that can have a lasting impact on
their futures. They talk about relationships, drugs and alcohol,
body image, education, health and fitness, and more. Financial
literacy programs help youth learn to make smart decisions about
saving and spending, giving them money management skills that
will last a lifetime. Kids of all ages learn to make smart choices in
the kitchen through nutrition and cooking classes.
To help whole families receive the health and life skills support that
they need, the Club offers an on-site family resource center at its
Huntington Beach Branch. The Center provides referrals to low-/no-
cost health care; enrollment assistance for public assistance
programs like Medi-Cal and Healthy Families; free parenting classes;
and free classes for parents on a variety of topics including financial literacy, home ownership, healthy relationships, and nutrition.

Their Time to Shine: Children Take Center Stage at the ClubHouse Academy
In January 2006, the Clublaunched its newest facility inFountain Valley, the ClubHouseAcademy Center for the PerformingArts. Located at 10200 SlaterAvenue in the former FountainValley Community Center, theClubHouse Academy is designedto fill the community's need for a
performing arts center that bridges the gap between recreational programs and expensive gyms or academies with intensive training.Neither too easy or too advanced or expensive, classes at theClubHouse Academy are just right for most families who want their children to have a high quality performing arts experience in a fun andaffordable setting.
The facility contains three dedicated program rooms: a dance studio, a gymnastics center, and a martial arts area. Classes for allage groups and levels of experience are offered Monday throughSaturday and include:
• "Parent and Me" - ballet, tap, and tumbling for parents and children who are walkers through age 4
• Dance - ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop for kids ages 2 ½ and up, as well as adults
• Gymnastics for youth ages 3 ½ and up• Cheerleading for youth ages 5 - 12 • Martial arts - karate and tae kwon do for youth ages 5 and
up, as well as adults
Three times each year, the gymnastics and dance classes hold showcase performances, giving children the opportunity to displaywhat they have learned to their families and friends. The attendanceat the most recent dance showcase nearly doubled in December, withsimilar growth patterns in gymnastics. Martial arts students participate in demonstrations as well, testing their abilities to progressto higher levels in their arts.
In addition to dance, gymnastics, and martial arts, the award-winningClubHouse Theatre splits its time between the ClubHouse Academyand the Kingston Branch. More than 140 cast members ages 8 andup learn all aspects of musical theatre production as they put on 35performances per year, with casts divided into beginner/intermediateand advanced levels.
With over 300 students served in 2006, enrollment in the classes isconstantly growing as more families learn about the programs available. Sara deBoom, Unit Director of the new site, says of the location's future, "We are extremely excited about the new opportunities that will be available in the coming year, including newclasses like country swing and fitness class. The classes that we offerat the Academy give our members the chance to participate in fun andhealthy experiences."

There's NoPlace LikeHome:Children at the Learning Center Preschooland Kid Connection Branch Find New Homes
After nearly 25 years at Wardlow School, the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley bid a fond farewell to
the longtime home of its Learning Center Preschool and
Kid Connection school age branch. Due to the Fountain
Valley School District's decision to sell the school site, the
Club's lease at the site was not renewed, facing the
Club with the challenge of finding a new home for the
Learning Center Preschool and relocating the members
at the Kid Connection Branch to other Club locations.
Now located at 16081 Waikiki Lane near the intersection
of Edinger Avenue and Bolsa Chica Street in Huntington
Beach, the Center welcomed new and returning
families the following Monday to freshly renovated
classrooms for youth ages six weeks to five years.
"Not only were we thrilled by the wonderful response we
have received from local families," says Tanya Hoxsie,
Chief Executive Officer, "we are also excited to be offering
our quality programs in an area of the community that
was not previously served."
In coordination with the Club's administrative staff,
Learning Center Director Chelo Loshak workedwith
her caring, professional staff to prepare for the move.
"While the relocation was challenging, our staff pulled
together and the quality childcare services that we
provide were not disrupted for our
families. We are making our new
home here." Additionally, the
Center retained its prestigious
accreditation from the National
Association for the Education of
Young Children and also recently
earned a 5-Star Quality Rating
from Orange County's United Way
Success by 6 Program.
Due to the sale of the Wardlow
School property, the Club was
also forced to close the Kid
Connection Branch. Approximately
380 young people from this site joined the membership
at the Kingston and Huntington Beach Branches. To
accommodate all the Kid Connection members
between the two sites, the Club made several
improvements to these facilities, including new paint
and carpeting in many of the rooms and a new Kids
Café 50's style dining area, complete with
restaurant booths and barstools.
In addition to the renovations at both school age sites,
the Club's Family Resource Center has also been moved
to the Huntington Beach Branch, providing families in
the community with referrals to no/low-cost health,
dental, and vision care, as well as parenting classes on
a variety of topics.
The Club is thankful to all those who made these
relocations and renovations possible, including the
Robert Mayer Corporation, Kingston Technology, and
Hoxsie Builders, Inc. With the help of its supporters, the
Club has found new homes for all the families it serves
and can look forward to the future to serve additional
families in the community.
Annual Report 7
Three years ago, the Club teamed up with the Huntington Beach City School District
and the Huntington Beach Adult School to offer an innovative family
literacy program for recent immigrants: The Twilight Education Project.
This program is special for many reasons; chief among them are that the
program addresses the needs of the whole family and that it breaks down
barriers to service identified by targeted families themselves.
Parents participate in English as a Second Language classes from certified teachers;
school age youth get tutoring and homework help to provide academic support that
their parents cannot give because of the language barrier; and preschool age
children learn the basics in English, preparing them for success in school. The
whole family is learning and growing together.
To make the program accessible to those who need it most:
• Twilight is offered free of charge
• Free bus transportation is provided to and from targeted neighborhoods
• The program is scheduled in the evening after the workday has ended
• The need for childcare is eliminated by providing services for the whole
family at the same time and location
This program has achieved outstanding results! 100% of participating school age
students improve their grades or maintain all As and Bs. 70% of parents report that
the program enables them to become more active in children’s education and literacy
activities. 40% of parents say that their new English language skills enabled them
to get a job, retain a job, acquire workforce readiness skills, or enter a job skills training
program. Each year, this program has made a difference to more than a hundred
families, giving them the tools they need to build successful lives in our community.
In the last year, leaders in Huntington Beach’s Oak View community, home to many
immigrant families, approached the Club and its program partners, asking to bring
this award-winning program to their part of the community. With great pleasure, the
Club and its partners have welcomed new groups to the Twilight Education Projectcollaborative to make this expansion possible. Oak View Elementary School and
the El Viento Foundation joined the partnership and have been critical in reaching
out to families in the Oak View community. Golden West College has also joined the
collaborative and became the program’s new location in Fall 2006. The college
provides classrooms for ESL instruction and homework help for youth, adding
much-needed space to accommodate the needs of the growing program.
The Club is thrilled to have the opportunity to make a life-changing difference to even
more families through this program expansion. All the collaborative partners extend
a special thanks to Orange County’s United Way and the Children & Families
Commission of Orange County, whose ongoing support helps make the Twilight
Education Project possible.
Twilight EducationProject Grows
8 Annual Report
It has long been the dream of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley to build a new Club to accommodate the
growing childcare and youth services needs of our community. Through a partnership with Golden West College
and the support of community members like you, we will be able to make that dream come true.
In December 2006, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley negotiated a 45-year renewable land lease agreement
to build a new Club in the middle of Golden West College’s campus in
Huntington Beach, which will be signed in January 2007. This new
30,000 square foot design will serve up to 500 children per day and
will be divided into three buildings: a child development
center for children ages six weeks to five years; a school age
youth center with a computer lab, education center, teaching
kitchen, arts and crafts room, games room, activity center, kids
café; and a joint-use gymnasium. The fantastic and affordable
programs that will be offered at this new permanent
location will make a difference to generations of families
from previously underserved parts of Huntington Beach as well as
families of Golden West College students, staff, and faculty.
The Club is delighted that Golden West College shares the
dream of affordable, quality programs for children and has
pledged to donate back a percentage of all the Club’s
lease fees towards scholarships for low-income families.

Annual Report 11
Ten local business men and women founded the Boys Club
of Huntington Beach with the help of the Anderson Trust
Fund and local businesses. The Club operated in a two-story barrack
purchased from the local VFW. At the same time, the Fountain Valley J.C.’s
founded the Fountain Valley Boys Club. A local development company
donated their old office building and helped put a metal building on the
Fountain Valley drive-in movie site.
The Girls Club of Fountain Valley opens its doors, with the help
of local service groups, city officials, and a donation from the
family of the late Lt. Cmdr. Charles R. Lee. The Club’s daily programs were
operated out of a local school.
Girls Club of Fountain Valley gets its own site, a three-
section trailer owned by the City of Fountain Valley, rented
for $1 per year.
All three clubs become co-ed and change their names to
reflect that boys and girls can participate in their programs.
Girls & Boys Clubs of Fountain Valley-Huntington Beach
(formerly the Girls Club of Fountain Valley) outgrows its
trailer and moves to the old Wardlow School site.
The Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley Boys & Girls
Clubs vote to merge the two organizations, forming the Boys
& Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley, serving two cities in three locations
(Club on Yorktown near Delaware, school site on Yorktown behind Oka
School, and a school site in Fountain Valley - Nieblas School).
With a goal of replacing the two smaller Huntington Beach
sites, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley breaks
ground at McCallen Park in Huntington Beach.
